If you can’t keep the clients you get, you have a giant hole in the bottom of your ship that you can’t plug. And that means your business is constantly struggling to get ahead.

Besides the stuff outside your control like clients moving or dying, the #1 reason people leave is they don’t

feel like they got results.

I see it time and time again. Fit pros, who are really good at their jobs, are constantly watching their clients leave their studio and never return because they promise to get them body transformation results, and when they number on the scale and the tape measure on the jeans doesn’t match, people leave.

And the hunt for new clients is on.

Why is that?

Well for one thing, results are the foundation of our business.

We’re graded on how well we can deliver for our clients. Whether they’re coming in to loss weight, build muscle, develop endurance, or increase flexibility, the bottom line is that we need to get our customers to exactly where they want. The more times we do that, the more successful we are. If we can’t, then building a business becomes even harder in this increasingly crowded market.

The big problem, which many fit pros don’t realize, is that quite often the results have nothing to do with us. We lock in to a very narrow view of weight loss without considering the client’s entire life and the lifestyle that they lead. We ignore their nutrition, their mindset, their daily reality outside the gym and just hope they are doing ok out there.

You can ignore that if you want. But it’s the number one reason why results become so difficult to come by.

The name trifecta means that there are three parts to the process. Most of us only engage in one part, straight training. That’s the easy part to get. But if you’re only doing that part, without addressing all the other lifestyle choices that are being made outside of the gym, you’re destined to continue failing.

If you follow me regularly or listen to my podcasts, you know how much I’m against the idea of trainers trading their hours on the floor for money as the only way they grow a business. If you’re not physically on the floor, then there’s no way for you to make money. You’re a slave to a clock that only has twenty-four hours on it. You’re not even awake for all those hours and most clients’ workout before or after work.

That approach is why fit pros drop out of this industry like flies. You simply can’t make any real wealth or

create any freedom in life this way.

But what if you could create programs that both builds your income and delivers results to your clients?

Can you instead of training dollars for hours, increase your money, while not working a single hour more? Sounds great, right?

That’s the trifecta.

So let’s get this out of the way. I’m going to drop a truth bomb on you and you can believe it or not. But, it’s something that I’ve seen firsthand and it’s something that anyone who’s spent any good amount of time training can tell you.

Fitness training by itself is not fat loss training.

Training someone and doing nothing else will not get the results your client is looking for.

Studies have shown, over and over, that if you only train a customer and they lose 30 pounds, the success rate over a one-year period is a measly 1%.

Does that sound like any kind of way to build a business?

Listen, I’m just talking about weight loss. If your client wants to build up strength or get faster in a race, then this statistic doesn’t apply. But weight loss is a whole other animal. You have to do more than train.

I have gotten pushback from so many trainers whose egos cannot take this simple fact in. Training, they insist to me, is the most essential component of a client’s fitness regimen. When I hear people say this, I think to myself, “Man, this person is really not looking at it from the client’s perspective.” Nor, are they looking at it from a behavioral reality.

Think about it.

A client wants to impress you in a training session. They’ll do what you tell them. They’ll push themselves hard. They’ll feel good about doing this and take that pride with them for the rest of the day.

But training is only a moment in a person’s day. There’s a whole lot of other time left to revert to what any normal human would do. And that’s do what feels good. And sometimes, spoiler alert, not being healthy feels really good.

That’s why the success rate hovers at 1%. Because training isn’t enough. It’s an important piece, no doubt. But if there isn’t a change to their diet and the thinking that gets them in trouble with their choices, then there isn’t any lasting success being built.

It’s like brushing your teeth right before you go to the dentist. If you’re not flossing and brushing regularly in the intervals between dentist appointments, your time at the dentist office isn’t going to make up for that.

So the two other components become just as important as training. My trifecta, and your client’s success, can’t work without them.

Whenever you’re helping someone lose weight, you’re not dealing with a person with a one-size-fits-all problem. You’re dealing with behavior. People react in different ways to the different struggles in their lives. And once you see that, it becomes pretty clear that two more elements are needed.

So when I was a trainer, I was incredibly frustrated at the lack of results I was getting from just training my clients. I knew there was a component that I was missing because I was doing everything right, my clients worked their tails off training with me…and….nothing...or not much at all.

When I was a trainer, I looked at metabolic testing. Then when I had my studio I looked at weight loss companies that dealt with nutrition but had no fitness, thinking it was going to be a good match.

But, once I saw behind those curtains, I saw that for them they weren’t super concerned with adding fitness and mindset, and that wasn’t doing much better. They only had a 10% success rate by themselves.

This keeping fitness and nutrition apart wasn’t serving either the weight loss industry or the fitness industry.

And that’s when I realized whoever brings these elements together was going to win in the market, and

win for clients.

So I began to combine the two areas of nutrition and training to help my clients along.

But here’s where I messed up, and I see it happening still to fit pros in every major city. I was a knucklehead and sent my clients to GNC or Vitamin Shoppe…so they could give their money to them. No residuals, no referral fees. I was essentially doing marketing for those other places and handing over money that could have gone into my business. If you’re doing this now, stop it.

What made the difference is when I found a nutrition line that I liked and believed in that would fill in the holes to my client’s nutrition struggles. But, the key was it was a nutrition product that could be easily shipped, paid a residual, so the business model also rewarded us.

For us that was when we combined Shakeology with our Beachbody model and we were in business to the tune of an additional 5-figures a month.

There was one piece, however, that was missing. We had nutrition and training sessions covered. How could I ensure that those extra hours in a day were also aligned with the work that my clients and I were doing together?

The answer makes sense to anyone who has a job or has taken a test. There needed to be accountability and there needed to be growth in the mind of our clients.

Support is everything. Personal development is absolutely critical.

We all seek support and validation for the things we do and the choices we make. Our friends think

like us. Our families behave like us. And societies all agree that certain values are necessary if we are to live together.

When it comes to really personal lifestyle choices, though, the support that we desperately need isn’t always there. Whenever I see a person who’s struggling with losing weight, the environment that they’re in isn’t supporting them in their endeavor.

Unhealthy environments lead to unhealthy behavior. So if you’re going out all the time and partying until the wee hours, it’s going to be difficult to get a handle on healthy choices. If you live in an area where the only dining options are fast food places and there aren’t grocery stores, just gas stations and convenience stores, then eating the right foods is going to be difficult. When you have an unsupportive spouse it’s almost impossible.

Because ultimately our biggest struggles are the ones that happen in our heads. You, me and everyone you know struggle with the emotions, anxieties, and stresses in our heads.

You can show up to train but if there are deeper issues at work and there isn’t a support system and personal development outside of the gym, no amount of sessions are going to help a client lose weight or get any meaningful results. 

That’s why personal development and accountability becomes so important.

I realized that if we could bring together the right elements that would help clients overcome how easily unhealthy environments surround them and how their thinking was affecting them, than we’d be getting somewhere.

Luckily it just so happens that accountability and personal development coaching has been made easier thanks to social media, mobile apps, texts, and online programs.

With everyone on their phones and online, we reasoned that meeting clients where they are and within their lifestyles was a clear path to success.

Using Facebook and our own apps, we could have people receive daily nutrition, motivation, and personal development lessons. This extended extra touch-points and accountability so that no excuse is available. If you had a phone, you could stay on track. It’s that simple.

In addition to the nutrition products that we sold in our studio, we developed nutrition lessons that went beyond your typical meal plans. We put information in the hands of our clients to empower them and take control of their weight loss. Now our connections to our clients were ongoing, instead of only when they walked through the doors of our gym.

And the results? Big difference. By the time we packaged everything together (training, nutrition,

accountability) our success rate of losing 30 lbs. and keeping it off for a year shot up to 89%. That’s the

kind of body transformation that keeps you in business by keeping customers happy.

Combine that with any nutrition programs and we’re talking about adding thousands of dollars to your business on a monthly basis.
