WWW.ADATUM.COM Dear Second Presbyterian Congregation, I am writing this letter on behalf of the Session. Many changes will be coming about and we want to assure you that the Session will plan for these transition actions, the first of which involves securing an interim pastor. A subgroup of Session members has been selected to work with the Reverend Judson Shaw, General Presbyter to achieve that end. That group includes the following persons: Bob Janney, Moderator of Personnel Sandra Lowery, Clerk of the Session Pete Steyn, Moderator of Building and Grounds No formal action may take place prior to June 1, 2015, after Pastor McCallen has left. Then a called Meeting of the Congregation will be scheduled for Sunday June 7, 2015 to present a motion to the Presbytery asking to dissolve the relationship with Dr. McCallen. The sub-group will work with Reverend Shaw in parallel to prepare a slate of 3-4 candidates for the interim position. Candidate interviews could occur as early as the first few days of June in order to bring the nominee to Session for approval. Contact is also made with the Committee on Ministry (COM) for approval. As they meet on the second Tuesday of the month, the earliest an interim could be in place here would be June 10 th , but we anticipate that this would occur in July. Generally, the contract for the interim pastor is 1-1.5 years or until a new pastor has been selected. Mrs. Stocker has graciously agreed to preach the first 2 Sundays in June as well as May 31 st . Guest pastors will be provided for the remaining two Sundays in June via the efforts of Mrs. Stocker. The new called and installed pastor selection process includes the following: Establish a Pastor Nominating Committee composed of 5-7 members including some from the Session. The Officer Nominating Committee will bring a slate of nominees to the congregation for election. The congregation will have an opportunity to offer suggestions to the Officer Nominating Committee before a slate of nominees is brought to the congregation. When invited, Rev. Shaw and COM liaison return to train the PNC in its function. Church mission study is performed and stated mission becomes available after Session and COM approval as a church “resume”. (We need to identify who we are as a church, where we are in achieving our goals and that we want a pastor who will help us reach them.) This is called a MIF or Mission Information Form. The church “resume” goes on-line in Louisville. Any matches of pastor resumes are identified and shared with the PNC for review. The committee narrows the field of candidates to 3 and seeks additional information from the General Presbyter. A potential new pastor is identified. COM examines the candidate. Based on PNC recommendation, we may have either a candidating sermon from the candidate or an Open House at Second Presbyterian for the nominee, before a congregational vote. Vote on new pastor. PNC works to reach this end. The PNC presents the candidate to the Session for it to determine the final terms of call. A called congregational meeting is scheduled for the congregation to vote on selection of the nominee as pastor. We on the Session will appreciate your support during the challenging journey to fulfill our needs. Please feel free to contact me or any Session member with questions or concerns. Dear Second Presbyterian Congregation,

Meet our new organist

We are so pleased to welcome Mr. David

Friberg as our new organist! Many of you are

already familiar with Mr. Friberg, as he has

played here at Second Presbyterian many times

over the years. He is also the keyboard accom-

panist for the Chattanooga Choral Arts and the

UTC Master Chorale. He is a member of the

American Guild of Organists, the Chattanooga Music Club, and the

MacDowell Music Club.

He received his B.A. and M.A. in organ performance from Bob

Jones University in Greenville, SC and went on to chair the organ

department there. During his years in the Army, he served as organ-

ist at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He has also served as the

Youth : Take a second look School’s out! Vacation

time! Camps, cookouts,

swim parties, and Sunday

School! They all go together

for summer. Of course we expect some weeks

away from home. Please come see us when you

are in town.

Now, how about those children?! We are most

blessed in so many ways. But these children are

at the top of my list of “count your blessings”.

This last month was the culmination of much

practice and cooperation. They have moved

another step up by singing with the adult choir.

Thank you Dr. Ford and choir members. I

believe our Mother’s Day song on the 17th was

perhaps our best. Thank all of you for your

support and positive comments about our

efforts.

Now for the sports and other extra activities:

Marilyn Bean—Most Improved Student

certificate

Sophia Bean—Most Improved Student

certificate; track—50 & 100 yard dash, long

jump and 4x100 relay

Sasha Carbone—1st in 4th grade girls 50 &

100 yard dash, high jump, and 4x100 relay.

Lillie Carney—1st place for 50 & 100 m track

run. One award that is neat, straight 100s in

conduct all year.

Nic Peirano scored some very important goals

in lacrosse this spring.

Emma Maynard played in a volleyball

tournament.

Our children are growing both spiritually and

physically. They are learning about competition

and team spirit in all areas of their lives.

Another “Thank you, Lord”.

Please come up and visit our toddler room. In

our efforts to update our department, a very

generous member contracted and paid for the

beautiful mural on the East wall. Thank you

anonymous benefactor.

In Christ,

Linda May

The Chattanooga Boys Choir and the Fort Bend Boys

Choir of Texas will perform a joint concert. Mr. William

R. Adams will direct the Fort Bend Boys Choir, and

Vincent Oakes will direct the Chattanooga Boys Choir.

Thursday, June 18, 7:30 PM

The UTC Masterchorale will present its 2015 concert at Second Presbyter-

ian Church. They are performing the beautiful Mass in G by Schubert

along with Psalm 90 by Ives. They will also include a set of music set to

the text of the Songs of Solomon.

Please come support both of these talented groups! Admission is free.

Until We Meet Again

I will miss every single one of you greatly! Come surprise my family and me on a Sunday morning at our

new church, Community Church at Tellico Village. Many of you have asked me to describe this church in

Tellico Village. It is a 1,500 member church nestled on Tellico Lake with 800 in worship each Sunday. I will

serve as the senior pastor alongside 3 associate pastors. The church is interdenominational. This means that

they welcome all Christian denominations to worship and fellowship together as one church family. God's

blessings upon each one of your families and the wonderful family of faith known as Second Presbyterian

Church!

In the Spirit, Perry

A highlight of the Summer of ‘14 at

Second Presbyterian Church was

the 1st Annual Midsummer Night’s

Potluck Picnic, an event that deliv-

ered on its promise of fabulous food

and great fellowship in the cool

comfort of the Helwig Fellowship

Hall.

The Board of Deacons has set the date for our second gathering for

Wednesday, July 29, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, and we hope you will circle

your calendar right now so that you won’t miss out on a wonderful even-

ing. Dinner will once again be potluck, with Linda Langston providing her

signature chicken and rolls. Please select your favorite side or dessert, and

bring enough to feed 8 people.

Your “neighborhood” deacon will extend another invitation closer to the

date, but knowing that Second Church members are busy people, we want-

ed to make sure you knew about the 2nd Annual Midsummer Night’s Pot-

luck Picnic well in advance. Please be sure to respond to your invitation

when it arrives so that we can set enough places. Last year, 84 members

and friends attended, and we hope even more will join us this year.

If you have questions at this point, please contact any deacon.

They’re on their way!

We have seven campers headed to John Knox Center, a ministry of the Presbytery of East Tennessee, this summer. Lillie Carney is a first time camper attending “mini-camp” beginning June 7. Veteran campers Dakota Carney, Sabrina Carney, Aaliyah Jones, Gabe Jones, Judah Jones and Chloe Langston will be go-ing to marathon camp, a two week adventure, beginning June 14! Please keep them in your prayers.

Also please keep Juliette Blais in your thoughts and prayers; she will be spending her summer break at mu-sic camp in upstate New York for most of the summer. Can’t wait to hear her play again for us in the fall!

Zach Tyler is a rising senior at Herit-age High School in Ringgold, Ga. He has played the saxophone since 6th grade. He is currently first chair in the school's Wind Ensemble and Jazz bands. He has sat first chair in the Georgia District VII Honor band, Dis-trict VII Jazz band as well as Georgia's

All State Symphonic band and Georgia All State Jazz bands. Zach has met the eligibility requirements and has currently been invited to audition for a seat in the NAFME National Jazz band.

Congratulations to Jack Marshall who will be awarded an educational grant by our congregation later in the summer. Jack will receive a grant of $1000.00 per aca-demic year for 4 years to assist with his college en-deavors. Jack will be headed to the University of Ten-nessee at Knoxville this fall!

Did you know that this award is available to all full-time students in post-secondary educational pursuits? What a great way to support our young adults!

Treasurer’s Report Greetings:

A very Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers in our congregation.

On behalf of Presbyterian Women, I would like to thank the congregation for their generosity on Presbyterian

Women Sunday. $154.29 was the proceeds from the luncheon that day. The PW offering that day was $701.00.

Each quarter our Presbyterian Women make a $550.00 pledge to the Presbytery of East Tennessee mission fund.

Any remaining funds at the end of the budget year are donated to various causes (please refer to the block

following this article).

I would like to thank Diane Stocker, Linda May, and Debra Noblitt for a wonderful service on Mother’s Day.

The Birthday Offering and Election of Officers to the Presbyterian Women Coordinating Team for 2015-2016

will be held on Sunday, June 7. The position of Recording Secretary is still open. Luncheon proceeds that day

will benefit Presbyterian Women.

Have a blessed month,

May was Mental Health Awareness Month. An article in Business Insider states that,

"Mental illness is increasingly widespread in the U.S., affecting one in five American

adults every year."

"Of the 45.6 million adults who had diagnosable mental illness in 2011, 11.5 million

had serious mental illness. The most common mental illnesses are depressive disorders

and anxiety disorders."

The Church must be prepared to minister to this issue. The Moccasin Bend Companions

from Second Presbyterian Church is a ten member team that ministers at the institution

every third Sunday.
