There is an EFI war brewing. There are now half a dozen different plug-and-play EFI systems on the market, and as the top aftermarket brands com-

pete to best each other, the consumer will get better, more intuitive technology at a fair price.

The same thing is happening in drive-train technology with six-speed manual trans conversions, paddle-shift automatics and locking converters that can be tuned for performance. That tech will make its way into the aftermarket, where our best and brightest will find ways to improve upon it.

The way consumers learn about and buy new products has also changed. Social media channels are an excellent resource but may contain misinformation and should be monitored and controlled by the brand. Keeping an open dialog with customers online is critical. Videos and downloadable PDF files can revolutionize the standard aftermarket installation instruction sheet, and tablets mean we can take our comput-ers and those digital instructions out to the garage.

In today’s marketplace, word travels at the speed of light, so it’s critical to be open, honest and transparent with your custom-ers and your suppliers. By creating positive relationships up front, word spreads that you’re a good company to do business with and things can go viral quickly.

The trend in both the performance parts and rac-ing markets is quality over quantity. In today’s economy, most customers are looking for the best product for the

dollars they are spending. I see custom-ers and competitors stretching their dol-lars more and being much more selective about what they buy and the number of events they attend. Sales seem to be more driven by maintenance and the need for replacement.

My specific market—drag-racing tires—has been pretty stable, though our customers have also been more focused on replacement and are waiting until the last minute to buy. The economy has guided this tread.

We as retailers will have to do a much better job with our customers in the year ahead. We need to be skilled in customer service, product knowledge and profes-sionalism to gain the trust of our custom-ers. We need to sell our companies, our products and ourselves. The companies that step up for the challenges will make their own opportunities.

We also need to do everything we can to be sure that all types of motorsports do well during the tough times so we will continue to have motorsports enthusiasts to buy our products.

The U.S. Environmen-tal Protection Agency con-tinues to invent new ways to regulate emissions and greenhouse gases, so it is important for the SEMA

Political Action Committee (PAC) to have support to fight for the industry. It is also important for retailers to align themselves with the highest-quality manufacturers. The challenges that lie ahead are daunting but are equaled in breadth by an ocean of new opportunities.

It will be interesting to see what perfor-mance-parts manufacturers come up with to complement new trucks, which are mov-ing toward a hybrid system of performance and power by using highly computerized controls for vehicle fuel delivery. It is excit-ing to think of all the possibilities once our industry starts designing products to unlock these vehicles’ true potential.

We also continue to see a large growth in programmers and tuners. When a con-sumer makes changes to a vehicle’s standard equipment, it is almost a requirement to reprogram some portion of the monitoring system so that the parts function effectively.

This industry was built by amazingly talented, driven, intelligent and good-hearted men and women. That is why it will never die, no matter what the future brings. Stay positive, stay focused and most of all, continue to have fun doing the things you love.

The most significant development for warehouse distributors is getting stan-dardized information from the parts manufacturers. And for parts manufactur-

ers, it’s the difficulty of dealing with the OEMs when it comes to modifications. It’s also getting harder to install engine-related performance parts because of tightening emissions standards and laws. Dealers don’t want to install anything that will affect safety, warranties or emissions, so dress-up items such as body kits, rims and interior parts are picking up steam.

There are still opportunities in mar-keting and selling parts designed to fit a certain model and vehicle. No one wants to modify universal parts to fit. If consumers can buy packages with all the correct parts, they will.

For young people, social media has taken the place of their cars, and their money goes to things such as video-game systems, com-puters and cell phones. Brick-and-mortar shops are being replaced by online competi-tion, so it will be very hard for mom-and-pop shops to survive if they don’t get aboard with an Internet presence.

Everyone is on the Internet now, but your website needs to be very easy to navigate. Customers will leave if they have to click through too many layers to find what they are looking for.

From a product perspec-tive, the bar of expectations is rising. Customers expect better parts, higher value and improved performance. Mediocrity is a dead end,

be it product performance or customer ser-vice. Customers are getting more educated every day.

Street performance is strong. There is continued interest in late-model perfor-mance, which is fueled by a strong OEM presence in Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs and Challengers, but the OEMs continue to improve their vehicles, so the opportuni-ties for large performance aftermarket gains are decreasing. There is no low-hanging fruit. Performance gains on late-model street cars are modest and require a high level of technology to accomplish. Power adders continue to gain popularity.

Sportsman racing is still very strong. I think the market and customers continue to love performance, personalization and rac-ing. Engine builders are gaining knowledge at a fast pace, thanks to the proliferation of knowledge, particularly online. You can watch videos on YouTube that will eventu-ally teach you a lot about everything. The danger is that there is no editing good info from bad info.

The best products and service win. Everyone must deliver value and service. It is very easy to shop around, so consumers are finding deals and excellent service.

The last few years have proven that the days of placing an advertising cam-paign, sitting back and tak-ing orders are gone. The market has become a more

complex place, with simply more of every-thing. Where there were 50 wheel brands 15 years ago, there are 150 now.

Companies have to differentiate their brand or product, focusing on what they’re truly good at and putting people in place to help adapt to new technology (both for run-ning the company as well as marketing it). You can out-market your competition—not with more ads but with more interaction and clearer messaging.

In general, I see diversity and cross-genre acceptance, such as Mustangs with Japanese wheels or Japanese nostalgia car restorers integrating American nostalgia car styling cues or import car enthusiasts also owning and modifying trucks.

In marketing, social media is not the be all and end all. Do not get into it if you don’t know how to be a part of it authen-tically. Understand the nuances of each platform, from Facebook to Instagram to Twitter. You do not need to be on every one.

Finally, retailers should go to more events and be at the ground level with their cus-tomer base.

The OEMs are work-ing with SEMA to provide emissions-compliant parts. GM has led the way with the E-ROD line of crate engines and crate pow-

ertrain systems; Mopar had a concept crate engine on display at PRI this year with full emissions equipment; Ford has been talking about similar plans.

Live streaming and social media posts are giving race fans and enthusiasts access in real time. The Pirelli World Challenge series is setting the bar for online entertain-ment with more than 430,000 followers on Facebook. My company, AVD Motorsports, has been servicing these needs for almost a year, and we have quickly helped the brand manage its online audience.

The OEM manufacturers have dra-matically raised their standards as to what a “street performance” vehicle offers the enthusiast consumer. The Corvette ZL1’s Nürburgring lap times are a great example of a production vehicle that offers all-around performance. These types of street vehicles give SEMA members an opportu-nity to work on machines that are already at a very high level of performance.

The modern performance car requires computer tun-ing for most engine power upgrades. Full-service install-ers and retailers may need to be able to provide dyno

tuning to their customers for something as simple as a cat-back exhaust. Mail-order and Internet retailers can’t provide that service.

We are seeing tremendous strength at the high end of the drag market with the introduction of our new forged one-piece Delta 1 rear double beadloc wheel.

The Pro Touring/G-machine movement also continues to grow. The popularity of autocross and Ultimate Street Car events, such as those produced by FM3 and other marketing companies, have created addi-tional visibility, which helps sell parts.

On the light-truck side, diesel perfor-mance continues to be strong and drives business in other categories as those enthusi-asts make additional modifications, includ-ing wheels, tires, lift/leveling kits and other accessories. Our racing business has been very good the last four years, but diesel performance has impacted the light-truck market more than any trend in the other market segments.

The modern-day enthusiast is no longer satisfied with single-phase performance. He expects the car to start, accelerate, handle and stop better than ever while getting good if not great fuel economy. Retailers should look at the vehicle as a compilation of dif-ferent systems that need to work in unison. I am most surprised by the Big Three’s efforts to bring back factory race cars and to develop new, more powerful and more efficient engines. Their involvement has been critical these last few years.

Trends in the parts indus-try are all about better per-formance. Industry leaders have raised the bar in all our product lines, meaning better, faster, stronger after-

market parts than ever before.One of the biggest breakthroughs in rac-

ing is the use of lock-up torque converters. Gone are the days of giving up 2%–4% slippage to a clutch guy. This allows for some incredible ET and speed records being set all over the world.

In the street market, the LS-based Chevy engine has made gains with the addi-tion of new blocks, head designs, tur-bos and superchargers, allowing 800hp to 1,000hp hot rods to be built and be driven on the street. Fuel injection also has made laptop tune-ability a reality for hot- rod enthusiasts.

But there is a challenge to manufacturing quality parts: ‘knock-offs.’ From a retailer’s standpoint, knock-off products may look exactly like a well-known name brand, but quality in materials and machining tolerances play a big factor in the overall performance of parts. The solution for quality manufactur-ers is to always stay ahead of the pack. If a manufacturer can think outside the box and fix a problem, it can create interest and build products that will spread like wildfire.

People are driving their cars longer and using them for more than just fun. Aftermarket performance parts are expected to not only handle daily driving,

but also deliver the true power that the buyer is looking for. When it comes to exhaust, we are seeing brand recognition continue to play a significant role. Sound quality is an important consideration, espe-cially for this market niche.

The most significant trend in the light-truck market may be more related to styling and how the vehicle performs from a dual-purpose standpoint rather than the strictly utilitarian use that continues to diminish. Buyers want the integration of electronic devices, smoother suspension and other comfort features when shopping for their next vehicle and considering the light truck as an option.

The performance market is strong. Peo-ple will always want to have more power, better performance and an incredible car or truck, but many can’t have both a fun car and a daily driver. One car or truck has to do both. People want products that will last and they can trust. We’re seeing a return to turbocharged OEM cars and trucks and a demand for smaller, lighter, rear-wheel-drive performance cars, such as the Scion FR-S. But the

most significant trend in street performance remains the popularity of suspension products to improve cornering.

Most end users have prioritized discretion-ary spending and made better-handling cars a priority. Six years ago, those same customers may have purchased turbo kits first and over-looked some of the basic modifications that make the driving experience more enjoyable.

Wheels have also always been a popular way to make a car stand out, but consumers are now looking for high-quality wheels made by reputable manufacturers. I’ve also noticed that the frequency with which wheels are changed on the same vehicle has increased.

As a performance warehouse distributor, one of our goals is to assist our jobbers and help them stay current with the latest trends and parts available to cater to each market.
