High credibility of infomediaries

Income from the seeds planted in the rice garden in our participating school in Davao Oriental were given to students, while some were used to buy farm tools. Half of a cavan was borrowed by a farmer for planting in the succeeding cropping season.

• Coordination between the teacher we trained and the Information and Communications Technology Fundamentals teacher.

– Some of the teachers we trained were not good at computers so they were not very successful in cascading information about the Pinoy Rice Knowledge Bank, an information portal that contains most information one has to know about rice farming

SUGGESTION: Open communication between the ICF teacher and the teacher we trained. Perhaps the principal can mediate.

• Mismatch of teaching load of some teachers we trained.

– Some of them did not teach crop production (horticulture) so they were not able to successfully reecho what they learned from the training

SUGGESTION: Teachers who will teach crop production are ideal training participants.

• Leadership potential.

– Some of the teachers we trained although rice production was not in their line of expertise prior to attending the training have been very successful in mobilizing support for the campaign. They were excellent at coordinating things within their school and their host community.

SUGGESTION: Teachers who have good leadership skills and can become champions of the campaign would make an ideal partner in the school.

• Absence of area for rice production.

– Some schools did not have area for rice production, which made it difficult for them to establish a rice garden.

SUGGESTION: Collaborate with host community as what most schools (in Albay, Cagayan) have done.

• Absence of certified seed growers in the area.

- After the varietal trials teachers wanted to plant in wider scale but there were no certified seed growers in their area.

PROPOSAL: We can train the teachers on seed growing, which can be an income-generating project for their school.
