Scope and Contents note
The papers include correspondence to and from Morgan, manuscripts of articles and speeches, manuscript notebooks and travel diaries, and the manuscripts of several of his books.Correspondents include Henry Adams, Adolph F. Bandelier, Charles Darwin, Joseph Henry,Francis Parkman, and Herbert Spencer.
Articles, bibliographies, and books have been based on the Morgan papers. In 1923, DonaldB. Gilchrist, Librarian of the University of Rochester, published a "Bibliography of Lewis H.Morgan" in volume two of the Rochester Historical Society's Publication Fund Series. In 1936,he published a pamphlet, "Manuscript Journals and Records of Indian Letters by Lewis HenryMorgan in the Rush Rhees Library," which gave a detailed description of these parts of thepapers. This pamphlet is Appendix A.
An article on the collection, "The Lewis Henry Morgan Collection" by Leslie A. White, appearedin The University of Rochester Library Bulletin volume II, no. 3 (1947) p. 48-52. The collectionhas been entered in the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections as number 61-1662.
The two biographies of Morgan have been based on material in the collection. They areBernhard Stern, Lewis Henry Morgan, Social Evolutionist, which was published by theUniversity of Chicago Press in 1931 and Carl Resek, Lewis Henry Morgan, American Scholar, which was published by the University of Chicago Press in 1960.
Several parts of the collection have been published separately. These include "Extractsfrom the European Travel Journal of Lewis Henry Morgan," edited by Leslie A. White andpublished in volume XVI (1937) of the Rochester Historical Society's Publication FundSeries; The Indian Journals, 1859-62, edited, and with an introduction, by Leslie A. White

which was published by the University of Michigan Press in 1959; and Pioneers in AmericanAnthropology: the Bandelier-Morgan Letters, 1873-1883, edited by Leslie A. White andpublished by the University of New Mexico Press in 1940.
Work slips used by Donald B. Gilchrist in compiling his bibliography of Lewis Henry Morgan, with additional entries for works on Morgan, are shelved immediately after the Manuscriptjournals.
(The above was written in 1968: the paragraphs that follow were added in 2008 and 2010.)
Several important books on Morgan have appeared since this register was originally compiled. They include Thomas R. Trautmann, Lewis Henry Morgan and the Invention of Kinship,Berkeley: University of California Press, 1987; Elisabeth Tooker, Lewis H. Morgan on IroquoisMaterial Culture, Tucson: University of Arizona Press, 1994; and Daniel Noah Moses, ThePromise of Progress: the Life and Work of Lewis Henry Morgan, Columbia: University ofMissouri Press, 2009.
The Indian Journals, 1859-1862 (1959) was reprinted by Dover Publications in 1993. It isimportant to realize that the pagination of the reprint differs from that of the original volume.Lewis Henry Morgan and the Invention of Kinship (1987) was reprinted by the University ofNebraska Press in 2008. Thomas Trautmann, the author, has provided a new introduction, three new appendices and an updated bibliography.

Immediate Source of Acquisition noteThe papers of Lewis Henry Morgan (1818-1881), American anthropologist, were willed byMorgan to the University of Rochester. The Library has added to the collection by purchaseand by the acquisition of photocopies of relevant material in other collections.
Morgan's library was bequeathed to the University of Rochester. It arrived several decadesbefore there was a special collections department in the library, and so all the bookswere first housed in the general stacks. Over the years, many of the rarer ones wereidentified and transferred to the special collections area. In 1988, all the volumes still in thegeneral stacks were so transferred. This was in conjunction with the project by Thomas R.Trautmann and Karl Sanford Kabelac to bibliographically reconstruct Morgan's library usinghis own brief listing of his library and the accession records of the University's library.

Appendix B: Memorandum on published portions of Lewis H. Morgan'smanuscript journals and Record of Indian LettersScope and Contents
Compiled by Elisabeth Tooker, August 1996
Title/Description Instances
Manuscript JournalsTitle/Description Instances
Vol. 1, no. 1, "Speeches at a council of the Iroquois..."
Scope and Contents
Elisabeth Tooker's 1989 paper titled "Onthe Development of the Handsome LakeReligion" (Proceedings of the AmericanPhilosophical Society, vol. 133, pp. 35-50) is aboutthis manuscript and contains extracts from it: JemmyJohnson's opening remarks on the last day (October7) and extracts from the closing remarks of sevendelegates that same day. What are apparently ElyParker's notes on the last two days of this council(October 6 and 7) are in the Parker Papers in theAmerican Philosophical Society Library (Freemanno. 3261) and were published in 1951 by WilliamN. Fenton in his "Iroquois Studies at the Mid-century" (Proceedings of American PhilosophicalSociety, vol. 95, pages 296-310), pp. 306-309.They are, then, Parker's notes for that portion ofthis manuscript in the Manuscript Journals thatis in Parker's hand. In this connection, it is notwithout interest that although Parker's descriptionof the last two days of this council is in his hand,
- Page 39-
Morgan (Lewis Henry) papers
his description of the first two days is in Morgan's.Parker apparently sent his account of the first twodays to Morgan in August, 1850. Morgan thencopied and returned it to Parker, who later thatyear sent Morgan his description of the remainingtwo days. Morgan published this version of JemmyJohnson's speech on the life and teachings ofHandsome Lake (what is now known as the "Codeof Handsome Lake") in League of the Iroquois (1851edition, pages 233-259) with some deletions andrearrangement.

Vol. 1, no. 16, "Translation of the speech made by JimmyJohnson..."
Scope and Contents
Above entry added April 24, 2001. Three versionsof this manuscript are known to have survived:this one in the Manuscript Journals, one in theNewberry, and one in the Huntington. Thereare minor differences in these manuscripts thatappear to be changes in words and the like Parkerintroduced in the course of copying the manuscripts. The manuscript in the Huntington is part of thecollection that the Huntington purchased fromArthur C. Parker that includes some manuscripts

Morgan (Lewis Henry) papers
Parker published in his The Life of General Ely S.Parker (published in 1919 by the Buffalo HistoricalSociety) including this one (on pp. 251-261). Thismanuscript in the Huntington, however, lacks thelast page of the original manuscript, which pageis now in the Buffalo and Erie County HistoricalSociety. Parker apparently did not realize this lastpage was missing and to make sense of those pageshe did have he rearranged them.
Vol. 1, no. 17, "Notes on the Iroquois...", April, 1846
Scope and Contents
What is apparently the version of this address thatMorgan gave to the New York Historical Societyin April, 1846 was published in 1928 by Arthur C.Parker in his "Government and Institutions of theIroquois" (Researches and Transactions of the NewYork State Archaeological Association, Lewis H.Morgan Chapter, vol. 7, no.1). On page 92 of his1923 "Bibliography of Lewis H. Morgan" (RochesterHistorical Society Publication Fund Series, vol. 2,pages 83-97) Donald B. Gilchrist lists such a paperas Parker describes. It is not now in the University ofRochester Library, nor is it in the Reynolds Library(now incorporated into the holdings of the mainbranch of the Rochester Public Library), Morganmade some relatively extensive changes in wordingin this version that Arthur Parker published ascompared to that in the Manuscript Journals--whichis probably the original one, the paper he deliveredto the Rochester chapter of the Grand Order of theIroquois on November 7, 1845.
