Blinkered Aramaayo puts rivals in the shade in Kranji MileFormer Godolphin galloper Aramaayo (Poet’s

Voice) claimed his highest prize since racing

in Singapore when he landed the S$1 million

Kranji Mile (Local Gr 1, 1600m) yesterday.

First past the post only once at his previous

Inglis will this morning officially

release the 226-lot catalogue for its 2020 Ready 2 Race Sale, which has

jumped in numbers and quality on the back of a robust 2019 Riverside

Stables marketplace, according to bloodstock sales and marketing

manager Sebastian Hutch.

Progeny of stallions such as Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Sebring (More

Than Ready), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), Pierro (Lonhro),

Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Written Tycoon (Iglesia), Deep Field

(Northern Meteor), Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro), Lonhro (Octagonal),

Nicconi (Bianconi), Dundeel (High Chaparral) and Hinchinbrook

(Fastnet Rock) are all represented in the Ready 2 Race catalogue.

Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible), the sire of Saturday’s brilliant Up And

Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) winner North Pacific, Choisir (Danehill

Dancer), Ocean Park (Thorn Park) and All Too Hard (Casino Prince) also

have two-year-olds catalogued, while two colts by champion US sire Into

Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) and a filly by top-class European sire Siyouni

(Pivotal) will also go under the hammer.

Hutch is unperturbed about Inglis “opening the batting” this year

despite warranted trepidation.

“We are looking at it from an optimistic perspective. That’s our

mandate as an auction house and, irrespective of when we are going to

be selling the horses, we’re confident that we can do an outstanding job

for our vendors and help our buyers find the right horses,” Hutch said

yesterday.

“There are pros and cons to going first: you get first crack at the money

but, by the same token, you set the market and traditionally people are a

bit more circumspect early on, so there’s a balance to be struck with it.

“However, we certainly feel that the first steps in having a successful

sale have been taken by having a fantastic catalogue of horses and, most

importantly, we’re dealing with people who are recognised as being

fantastic horse people and that’s a massive part of the breeze-up format -

the relationship buyers have with the horse people presenting the horses.”

Vendors with a growing reputation for preparing and selling well-

credentialled racehorses are again supporting the Riverside Stables sale,

with Blake Ryan (20 lots), Hannover Lodge (19), and Damian Lane’s

Glenvale Park (five) among them.

New Zealand consignors Ohukia

Lodge (19), Cheltenham Stables (three), Kiltannon Stables (ten), Prima

Park (ten) and Riversley Park (four) will also send horses across the

Tasman for the Ready 2 Race Sale.

Prima Park sold the top-priced lot, a Deep Field gelding who made

$340,000 to the bid of George Moore, and a Headwater (Exceed And Excel)

gelding who made $210,000 for agent Bevan Smith and Singapore trainer

Michael Clements, at last year’s sale.

Kelly Van Dyk, who is also preparing a draft of 25 for the NZB sale

under the Prima Park banner, told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that

the Kiwi operation had been buoyed by its success at the 2019 sale.

This year, they are preparing a select draft including colts by Zoustar,

Tivaci (High Chaparral) and Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) as well as a

gelding by Ocean Park (Thorn Park), the sire of last season’s Epsom Handicap

(Gr 1, 1600m) and Golden Eagle (1500m) winner Kolding among others.

“We have identified horses that we think would suit the Australian

market. Obviously, Tivaci is an up-and-coming sire and the two we’ve

selected to go over there are very nice horses and we’re quite excited

about them. They’re very good movers and the early word has been very

good on the Tivacis,” Van Dyk said.

“The Zoustar was bought in Melbourne to come back to the Inglis sale

and he’s a standout. He’s a beautiful horse and physically and mentally

he’s a very good two-year-old type. They are the sort of horses we think are

going to get up and be ready in October.”

The closure of the international borders into Australia and the current

state border closures of Queensland and Victoria because of coronavirus

will no doubt impact the market, but Van Dyk remains positive about two-

year-old vendors’ prospects this year.

“We’re going to be relying on the bloodstock agents for those (Asian)

markets and it’s going to be hard without Hong Kong there (on the ground),

which is a big player for us in the ready to run market, but (people like

agent) Bevan Smith has gone over to Australia and done all the hard work

with quarantine and basing himself there,” she said.

“We just have to have faith in those agents being able to get the deals

done with their clients up in Asia.

“The trial market has also been very strong. We just sold a Sebring colt

up to Hong Kong last week off a one-win trial and they have been very

prominent and they are definitely still wanting horses … and hopefully

that can lead into the ready to run market as well.”

Prominent Hong Kong trader Upper Bloodstock was active at the Magic

Millions National Yearling Sale, relying on videos, photos and feedback from

agents on the ground to buy, and it is hoped that the willingness to trust on-

the-ground advice and the advancing technology can translate to an active

international buying bench at the Ready 2 Race Sale.

“The breeze-up sale is arguably a sale where there’s more information

available on the stock on offer than any other sale format,” Hutch said.

“This is a sale where you can see the horses gallop under saddle and

follow their trajectory as developing racehorses and get a line through the

breeze and the time they are running, etc, as to where you think they might

end up. The volume of information that is available is as great as any other

auction and I think that is conducive to attracting people to participate.”

There has been anecdotal evidence that, despite the economic havoc

caused by Covid-19, that many trainers and syndicators have experienced

renewed interest from owners in investing in new horses.

The strength of the domestic market, which has been a slow burn for the

auction houses conducting the southern hemisphere breeze-up sales, will

also be pivotal to the success or otherwise of this year’s ready to run auctions.

“What (racing continuing) has done is given people a window into our

sport who otherwise might not necessarily have been observers before

the pandemic and it’s been a great sell for the sport and hopefully we can

sustain that momentum,” Hutch said.

“It’s been great to hear ... syndicators, trainers and agents expressing a

positive interest in stock. Certainly, we found at our breeze-up sale last year,

that there was really strong domestic interest in the sale and we’ve worked

very hard to canvass that. Again, a lot of it is borne out of the confidence that

investors have in people presenting the horses which is why we were so keen

to try and deal with as many established participants as possible.

“We hope that continues into the 2020 sale and certainly the early

indications are that that is the case.”

The Inglis Ready 2 Race breeze-ups will be conducted in NSW,

Queensland, Victoria and New Zealand in September with a last-minute

session scheduled at Warwick Farm on Friday, October 16, five days out

from the sale.

Ford secures Bostonian ride in Winx StakesJay Ford has secured the ride on Group 1 winner

The Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) for Saturday’s

Winx Stakes (registered as Warwick Stakes) (Gr

1, 1400m). "They were juggling around trying to

find someone and they ended up ringing me,"

Ford said. "It came out of the blue but I will take

the opportunity. Some weeks are good for me,

some weeks aren't. I ride for most stables but

I'm not tied to any stable so I'm not continually

getting the base support from the stables -

it's a rollercoaster, you are up and down. I've

watched The Bostonian since his early days, he

was quite an underrated horse then but now he

has made his presence felt at the top level. He's

a very solid ride in the Winx Stakes."

North Pacific and Doubtland to remain apartTeam Hawkes’ star three-year-olds North

Pacific (Brazen Beau) and Doubtland (Not A

Single Doubt) are unlikely to clash this spring,

Wayne Hawkes indicated yesterday. “They’re

slightly different types of horses,” he said.

“(Doubtland) is doing everything right – he’s a

beautiful individual, he’s a hell of a good sort,

he was an expensive yearling at $1.1 million

and he’s got two Golden Slipper winners in

his immediate family, so he’s got a cracking

pedigree to boot. He’s only had the two starts

for two wins and he excelled that day on the wet

track in the Kindergarten Stakes that he won

at Randwick by about the same margin as old

mate (North Pacific) won by yesterday. He’s a

pretty promising horse and it will be good to

get him up and going. Where he goes, we don’t

know yet, to be honest. We’re just not sure what

we do. I can give you one guarantee; the closest

they’ll get to looking at each other is across the

barn, I don’t think they’ll be racing against each

other – that’s for sure and certain.”

Memsie next for Mystic JourneyDespite a disappointing performance in the P

B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on Saturday,

Mystic Journey (Needs Further) is still on track

to run in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

“She seems fine,’’ trainer Adam Trinder told

Racing.com yesterday. ‘’It just didn’t work out.

Although it was just a (soft) 6 and you shouldn’t

make excuses there, she wasn’t comfortable on

that with the tempo of the race. She was wide

and deep. It was a starting point, maybe not

quite the one we were looking for, but she’ll

definitely improve on that. All boding well over

the next 72 hours, and as we stand here on

Sunday morning, she’ll go to the Memsie.’’

Behemoth likely for Memsie Meanwhile, Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner

Behemoth (All Too Hard) is also likely to head

to the Memsie Stakes for his next assignment.

“He was going to go to the Memsie or the

race he won last year (in Adelaide) the Penny

Edition and it was going to be a decision that

was performance-based and on what we saw

there yesterday, it looks like he’s ready for his

chance in that better grade,” trainer David

Jolly told Racing.com. Jolly confirmed Craig

Williams will take the mount in the Memsie.

Windstorm set for Valley assignmentThe Bob Peters-owned Windstorm (Redoute’s

Choice) will begin his spring campaign in a

BM90 race over 1200 metres at Moonee Valley

on Saturday, with the prominent Perth owner

eyeing a slot in The Everest (1200m) after

Showmanship’s (Showcasing) impressive win

on Saturday. ‘’He could be an Everest horse too

but, of course, he’s got to show the slot holders

what he can do,’’ Peters said of Windstorm.

Heath on the cards for SuperstormMeanwhile, Peters has indicated that his All Star

Mile (1600m) runner-up Superstorm (Sebring)

could begin his spring campaign in The Heath

1100 (Gr 3, 1100m) on Memsie Stakes day. ‘’I’ve

got to make up my mind on him and I might run

him on Memsie day in the 1100-metre race The

Heath,’’ Peters told Racing.com. ‘’He’s got to

start somewhere and he’s similar to the others

in that he was in the middle of his preparation

when he travelled. He came in a month behind

the others as well. I was thinking I was going up

to the Golden Eagle, so I kept him back longer.’’

Gytrash and Richards hit the roadStar sprinter Gytrash (Lope De Vega) set off

on his Everest journey yesterday, departing

Gordan Richards’ stables for Sydney. “The way

it works out it’s roughly eight hours each day

which is basically what he would do when he’s

gone to Melbourne, raced, then come home

the next day,’’ Richards said. “He should be fine

with that, he’s been to Melbourne enough and

usually travels pretty well.” Gytrash is likely to

have his first-up run in the Concorde Stakes (Gr

3, 1000m) at Rosehill on September 5. “Getting

up there a couple of weeks out from his first

race should hold him in good stead,’’ Richards

added. “The plan is to have a trial at Warwick

Farm and then run in the Concorde Stakes a

fortnight after that.”

Spell confirmed for Hydro StarAfter finishing last in the Vain Stakes (Gr 3,

1100m) on Saturday, John McArdle yesterday

confirmed that impressive debut winner Hydro

Star (Headwater) is set for a spell. Whilst it was

initially very disappointing and we expected

better from him, after seeing he’s feeling his

shins it’s more understandable and we’re going

to spell him,” McArdle told Racing.com. “He’s a

big baby and needs to grow up, but he’s quick

and it was encouraging to see he could record

those good sectionals. We’ll put him away

and get his racing manners in check and he’ll

hopefully be ready to really show us what he’s

made of in the autumn.”

Sebring filly makes eye-catching debut

The John Sadler-trained Mozzie Monster

(Sebring), who is nominated for the Thousand

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), made an impressive

start to her career at Cranbourne yesterday,

winning a 1200-metre maiden by four lengths.

“I don’t want to sound like a smart aleck but it

didn’t shock me to see her do that,” Sadler said.

“She was good wasn’t she, she really was good,

obviously she got through the going okay. If

you saw her in the mounting yard she’s a very

nice filly and she’s going to derive a great deal

of benefit from that run. I believe she’s at least

a Listed class, I don’t know about the Thousand

Guineas but we’ll head towards it, we’ll go

home and set out a program for her now. She’s

quite a quirky filly, she’s got a funny nature

where she’ll bite your head off. She’s just like a

lot of those really good fillies, not that I’ve had

many, but you’ve just got to watch her all the

time, she’s got a real attitude.”

NSW to remain closed to Victorian horsesRacing NSW chief steward Marc Van Gestel has

given no indication that the governing body

is likely to relax its ban on Victorian-based

racehorses entering the state any time soon.

“If we get to a point where we’re comfortably

satisfied that the (Covid-19) risk is minimised

then there may be some relaxation but at this

point in time the borders remain closed,”

Van Gestel told Racing NSW at Randwick

on Saturday. The ban has severely impacted

NSW-Victorian border trainers, predominantly

Mitch Beer and Donna Scott, who have horses

stranded in the southern state and are unable to

have them transported to their Albury stables.

Van Gestel said it was “fanciful” suggesting

that horses could be walked across the border

and then handled by different staff in order

to sufficiently minimise the risk of spreading

coronavirus. “We have taken advice from our

biosecurity expert in terms of what are the

risks and the risks include not just the handlers

coming across, but the virus being contained

on gear as the horses are transported across,”

he said. “There’s all different things that are

involved in terms of what is acceptable risk and

what is not. That, for us, is fanciful and we’d

like to ensure that in coming here there’s no

risk of bringing Covid-19 into the NSW racing

industry.”

First winner for Will FreedmanWill Freedman, the latest of the famous racing

dynasty, yesterday trained his first winner when

Time To Dazzle (Mafki) won at Narromine.

The son of trainer Richard, who operates with

his brother Michael in Sydney, recently went

out on his own based at Scone in the Hunter

Valley. With just his third runner, the Dynamic

Syndications-owned Time To Dazzle won

the 1600-metre class one by a long neck after

finishing fifth at her first start for the trainer

earlier this month. “It’s a terrific feeling. Rachel

(Hunt), my partner, and I have been working

pretty hard to try and get these horses in good

shape and they’re all running well,” Freedman

told Sky Racing. ”Dynamic has been terrific

to me. They were one of the most supportive

owners from when I started going, so I am really

appreciative of the support I’ve had. It’s actually

a bit emotional.”

Tasmanian government to boost racing industry revenueThe Tasmanian Government has announced a

further increase in stakes to support the state's

racing industry. There will be another three per

cent increase in stakes money for greyhound,

harness and thoroughbred racing, in addition to

the three per cent increase announced in June.

Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, said: "This six

per cent total stakes increase will greatly assist

Tasmania’s racing participants particularly

following the impact of COVID-19 on the

industry. At the last election, our Government

committed to increasing stakes by an average

of four per cent a year and, with today’s

commitment, we will have already increased

stakes by 12.2 per cent." It is expected that the

new stake money levels will be in place by late

September. $2.53 million will be provided to

racing from the first six months of the Point of

Consumption Tax (POCT), with the majority of

this funding to be directed into prize money,

with funds also going towards animal welfare

and infrastructure, and there will also be one-

off support from the POCT for Tasracing, which

was unable to collect any race field fees during

the COVID-19 enforced shutdown.

Stewards inquiry into Toowoomba rideStewards in Queensland have opened an

investigation into the ‘running and handling’ of

the Mark Currie-trained Vincit (Love Conquers

All) in Saturday evening’s QTIS 3YO BenchMark

62 Handicap (1000m) at Toowoomba.

Apprentice Isabella Rabjones rode the gelding

into third place behind his stablemate Mishani

Appeal (Denman). Rabjones and her mount

were placed last entering the home turn, but

made ground in the straight to finish two

lengths behind the winner. Stewards took

exception to Rabjones’ lack of vigour on Vincit

in the straight. The inquiry was adjourned to

take evidence from Currie and enable Rabjones’

master, Chris Munce, to be present.

Julius on track for springAfter an impressive trial at Taupo on

Wednesday, trainer John Bell is confident his

stable star Julius (Swiss Ace) is in good order

heading into the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m)

at Te Rapa on September 5. “He has been in

work a while and in fact he was too forward so

we had to put him out for three weeks, to back

off him,” said Bell. “He has had his trial which

has brought him on nicely and I think a gallop

between races somewhere in the next week or

two should have him spot on for the Foxbridge.”

The nine-year-old Group 1 winner will look

to target the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m)

after his Te Rapa assignment. “We’ve got him

entered for the Tarzino down at Hastings so

he will head there provided he goes well at Te

Rapa,” Bell said. “His main aim this season will

be to try and defend his Railway Stakes title at

Ellerslie on New Year’s Day.”

Treble for veteran MoseleySouth Island stalwart jockey Terry Moseley

collected a treble at Riccarton on Saturday, as

he continued to prove that age is merely just

a number when it comes to riding winners.

53-year-old Moseley has enjoyed a career that

has spanned almost 40 years and is producing

some of his best form in the saddle. “I love

my riding and I think as you get older you

appreciate days like I had on Saturday even

more,” said Moseley, who kicked off his treble in

the opening race through Figeameout (Makfi),

before striking in races three and four aboard

Zoltan (Iffraaj) and Madam Sequoia (Redwood).

Moseley was particularly impressed by three-

year-old Zoltan. “He’s still a little wet behind

the ears but I was very impressed with him,”

he said. “He (Ken Rae, co-trainer) did say he

could be a Derby type but I think that while he

is going so well over the shorter distances, he

would be suited to sticking to that range for the

time being.”

22 for Lord KanaloaShadai Stallion Station resident Lord Kanaloa

(King Kamehameha) sired his 22nd individual

stakes winner yesterday when R Star (5 h

ex Wave Queen by Soccer Boy) took out the

Kokura Kinen (Gr 3, 2000m) at Kokura. The

five-year-old ran out a one-length winner

ahead of Satono Garnet (Deep Impact)

with Outliers (Victoire Pisa) a length and a

quarter away in third. Lord Kanaloa, who is

also responsible for this year’s Blue Diamond

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tagaloa, stood for

a fee of ¥20,000,000 (Approx AU$260,000) in

2020.

Satono Arthur back in the winners’ stallSatono Arthur (6 h Deep Impact ex King's Rose

by Redoute's Choice) returned to the winners’

stall for the first time in more than two years

with a win in the Sekiya Kinen (Gr 3, 1600m)

at Niigata yesterday. The six-year-old entire

defeated Trois Etoiles (Lord Kanaloa) by a

length and a quarter with the same margin back

to Andraste (Orfevre) in third. Satono Arthur is

the best performed of three foals to race out of

Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare King’s Rose,

who won the New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m) and was placed at Group 1 level in

Australia.

25 for Clodovil

Favourite Tiger Tanaka (Clodovil) followed up

her Prix Robert Papin (Gr 3, 1200m) third with

a first stakes victory in yesterday’s Prix Francois

Boutin (Gr 3, 1400m) at Deauville. The Charley

Rossi-trained juvenile is now five wins from six

career starts and becomes the 25th individual

stakes winner for her sire Clodovil (Danehill)

and second two-year-old Group winner this

year following Steel Bull’s Molecomb Stakes

(Gr 3, 5f) win last month. Tiger Tanaka drew

two lengths clear in the closing stages to

beat La Gioiosa (Myboycharlie) while Unveil

(Showcasing) kept on for third. Clodovil, who is

also the sire of 2014 Kingston Town Classic (Gr

1, 1800m) winner Moriarty, stands at Rathasker

Stud in Ireland and his 2020 fee was €8,000.

21 for Poet’s VoiceSong Of Life (6 m ex Sign Of Life by Haafhd)

scored a valuable first black-type success at

the age of six, as the daughter of Poet’s Voice

(Dubawi) defeated nine rivals to win the Preis

der Stadtsparkasse Dusseldorf (Listed, 1400m)

yesterday. Song Of Life finished a length

and three-quarters ahead of the Godolphin-

owned Dathanna (Dubawi), who is out of the

Australian Group 3-winning mare, Colour

(More Than Ready), with the same margin

back to Celestissime (Camelot) in third. The

Jean-Pierre Carvalho-trained mare became

her sire’s 21st individual stakes winner, joining

the likes of Group 1 winner Trap For Fools

and Group 2 winner Viridine on that list. The

late Poet’s Voice was also the sire of Kranji

Mile (Listed, 1600m) winner Aramaayo in

Singapore yesterday.

Unbeaten Palace Pier adds Jacques Le MaroisLeading three-year-old Palace Pier (Kingman)

remained unbeaten for John Gosden and

Frankie Dettori and claimed a second Group

1 win in yesterday’s Prix Jacques Le Marois (Gr

1, 1600m) at Deauville. The colt was last seen

beating Pinatubo (Shamardal) in the St James’s

Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot in June on

just his fourth start and first attempt in stakes

company and he duly followed up with an

impressive three-quarters of a length victory

over fellow Royal Ascot Group 1 winners

Alpine Star (Sea The Moon) and Circus

Maximus (Galileo), who was five lengths back

in third. Bred by Highclere Stud and Floors

Farming, he was a 600,000gns Tattersalls

yearling and, by Kingman (Invincible Spirit),

he is out of the unraced Beach Frolic (Nayef ),

who is a half-sister to Group winners Bonfire

(Manduro) and Joviality (Cape Cross).

29 for Hurricane CatThree-year-old Hurricane Dream (3 c ex

Shalimara by Siyouni), who was unbeaten at

his first three starts, bounced back from a six-

length defeat in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr

1, 2100m) last month to claim a first stakes

success in the Prix Nureyev (Listed, 2000m)

at Deauville yesterday. He became the 29th

individual stakes winner for his sire Hurricane

Cat (Storm Cat), who shuttled from France

to Argentina and Chile and whose progeny

includes six Group 1 winners. The Mikael

Mescam-trained Hurricane Dream was sent off

as favourite and prevailed by a short head from

the German raider Dawn Intello (Intello), who

was three lengths ahead of him in the French

Classic, while Now We Know (Kendargent) was

a length and a half further back in third.

60 for Kodiac

Stepping up from her last start maiden win at

Wolverhampton, Zoetic (2 f ex Zallerina by

Zamindar) rose to the challenge and took out

the St Hugh’s Fillies’ Stakes (Listed 5.5f) at

Newbury on her fifth start, having been in the

frame on her first three outings. The James

Ferguson-trained juvenile was held up early on

and made headway in the final furlong to beat

Fairy Dust (Gregorian) by three-quarters of a

length while the favourite Caroline Dale (Lethal

Force) was a further length and a quarter

behind in third. Leading two-year-old sire

Kodiac (Danehill), who is responsible for this

year’s Royal Ascot Group-winning juveniles

Nando Parrado and Campanelle, stands at

Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland where his fee for 2020

was €65,000.

38 for Le Havre

Wonderful Tonight (3 f ex Salvation by

Montjeu) recorded a surprise victory in the Prix

Minerve (Gr 3, 2500m) when turning the tables

on short-priced favourite Valia (Sea The Stars)

to claim a first stakes win, becoming the 38th

individual stakes winner for her sire Le Havre

(Noverre). Beaten by two and a half lengths to

Valia in the Prix de Thiberville (Listed, 2400m)

three weeks ago, Wonderful Tonight reversed

the form on the heavy Deauville track, winning

by two and a half lengths. Listed winner Paix

(Muhaarar) was third, a further length behind.

The filly, a €40,000 purchase from Arqana’s

Deauville August Yearling Sale, is out of three-

time winner Salvation, a dam of five to race with

four winners, including stakes winner Penjade

(Air Chief Marshal), while this is also the

family of Champion two-year-old colt, Camelot

(Montjeu). Le Havre stands at Montfort et

Preaux, where he commands a fee of €50,000

(Approx. AU$83,000).

First for FrostedDarley’s Frosted (Tapit) sired his first winner on

Saturday as Inject (2 f ex Appealing Zophie by

Successful Appeal) romped to a six-length victory

in a five furlong maiden at Ellis Park on Saturday.

A US$390,000 purchase from the Keeneland

September Yearling Sale, Inject is a three-quarter

sister to Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) winner and

Gainesway Farm resident stallion Tapwrit (Tapit),

and a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Ride A Comet

(Candy Ride). A three-time Grade 1 winner in

America, Frosted is due to have his first southern

hemisphere runners this season. He will stand

this season at Darley’s Northwood property for

$22,000 (inc GST).

First for DaredevilFormer WinStar Farm resident Daredevil (More

Than Ready) sired his maiden top flight winner

on Saturday when Swiss Skydiver (3 f ex Expo

Gold by Johannesburg) took out the Alabama

Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) at Saratoga. The Kenneth

McPeek-trained filly defeated Bonny South

(Munnings) by three and a half lengths with

Harvey’s Lil Goil (American Pharoah) a length

before relocating to Turkey in 2020.

BY MICHAEL LEE | SPG TURF CLUB

Former Godolphin galloper

Aramaayo (Poet’s Voice) claimed

his highest prize since racing in

Singapore when he landed the

S$1 million Kranji Mile (Local Gr 1, 1600m)

yesterday.

First past the post only once at his previous

six starts at Kranji, the Poet’s Voice (Dubawi)

five-year-old had, however, not been able to

fully showcase his true Australian form that

includes a Group 3 win (Spring Stakes over

the same mile trip in Newcastle in 2018), most

notably, his second-last run when a certainty

beaten in the Stewards’ Cup (Gr 2, 1600m) back

in March.

That day, he blundered at the start,

conceding close to six to seven lengths, but still

made up stacks of ground to run third, less than

two lengths off the winner Siam Blue Vanda

(Echoes Of Heaven).

That ‘nearly horse’ tag stuck on further

when a flying third at his first-up run since

the Covid-19 break in a Class 2 race over 1100

metres on July 26.

But that label finally ‘came unstuck’ when

it mattered most on Sunday, earning trainer

Shane Baertschiger his third Group 1 success

since taking over from his father Don in 2012,

and first-time partner Ruan Maia, his first

Group 1 hurrah in Singapore.

After being promoted to International

Group 3 this year, the Kranji Mile was

unfortunately brought back down a peg to

domestic Group 1 status as part of the slew of

changes brought about by Covid-19.

The owner, the Aramco Stable, is no

stranger to such Group 1 heights either, having

jointly celebrated their first with Baertschiger

thanks to Aramco (Magic Albert) in the Lion

City Cup (Local Gr 1, 1200m) last season.

Meanwhile Australian bloodstock agent

Peter Twomey celebrated his first Singapore

Group 1 victory after purchasing the gelding

privately under his Wattle Bloodstock banner

from Godolphin, with the Kranji Mile and

Singapore Derby in mind.

The fanfare and hoopla that usually come

with the territory on such big days of racing

were sadly missing with the zero-crowd policy

still enforced in line with the strict Covid-19

protocols on course.

Baertschiger and assistant-trainer Scott

Bailey led Aramaayo into the sound of maybe a

few passing birds (crickets if it had been a night

meeting), but the Australian handler was still

basking in that new triumph in his own quiet

way.

“This is my third Group 1 win, but it

definitely feels different from the first two.

There were no cheers, no photos and no prize

presentation, but that’s the way it is now,” said

Baertschiger.

“A Group 1 win is still a Group 1 win, and

we will celebrate later. I knew this horse had

peaked at the right time after he ran super on

Polytrack first-up.

“He won with blinkers in Australia and

we’ve been saving them for the Kranji Mile.

He’s a horse who stops when he hits the front

too early.

“He still tried to do it once he passed

Countofmontecristo, but when Maia growled at

him, that kept his mind on the job.

“He’ll of course wear a set of blinkers in the

Derby, which, just nice, is in three weeks’ time.

Fingers crossed, he’ll be a big runner again.”

The HK$500,000 Singapore Derby (Local

Gr 1, 1800m) on September 6 had always

been the race Aramaayo (known as Aramayo

when prepared by top Sydney trainer James

Cummings for two wins for the mighty

Godolphin) was targeted at as a four-year-old

when purchased by Wattle Bloodstock, even if

the glamour race has undergone many changes

this year, both in terms of conditions (now open

to five-year-olds) and prize money.

It would now take a crowbar to prise

Maia off Aramaayo’s back, more so when

Baertschiger revealed he had eyed the Brazilian

jockey off as his partner quite a while back.

“I actually wanted Maia to ride Aramaayo in

the Stewards’ Cup, that race he missed the start

badly, but Maia had a booking already,” said the

Australian handler who was incidentally sealing a

first win with the Brazilian at their eighth try.

“Aramaayo was not confirmed for the

Kranji Mile at first, but when some of the horses

dropped out, he got up. When I asked Maia this

time, he was okay to ride him.”

Blinkered Aramaayo puts rivals in the shade in Kranji Mile

The two-time Macau champion jockey

responded to the faith in his ability in the best

possible way with a 10-out-of-10 ride, even

resorting to his vocal cords to put the race to

bed.

After dropping to the rear as instructed,

Maia only started to improve his mount from

the 800-metre mark on the back of favourite

and horse-to-beat Countofmontecristo (Echoes

Of Heaven), when he commenced his run four

wide on the outside.

It was an inspired move because once

Michael Clements’ runner went for home,

Aramaayo had also cleared the other 14

runners and was left with only the hotpot to

gun down.

That he did the moment Maia clicked him

up for his run at the 300 metres. For a second,

he looked so full of running that he would just

sweep past Countofmontecristo and annihilate

the field as he pleased, but that little quirk

of thinking the job is done and dusted was

evidently not quite straightened out.

He seemed to be levelling off with

Countofmontecristo, who tried to muster

another gear, but once Aramaayo was back on

an even keel, the issue was put beyond doubt.

Aramaayo had half a length to spare at the

wire, not from Countofmontecristo, but from

the latter’s stablemate, Top Knight (Zoustar),

who came from even further astern to pinch

second place by a short head.

Countofmontecristo hung on gallantly for

third place, three lengths clear of a bunched-up

quartet made up of Sun Marshal (Sepoy), Mr

Clint (Power), Siam Blue Vanda and On Line

(O’Reilly), finishing in that order. Aramaayo ran

the 1600 metres on the Short Course in 1min

33.85secs, only 0.24 second outside the seven-

year-old record of Super Ninetyseven (Show A

Heart).

A multiple-Group 1 winner back in Brazil

and twice in Macau, Maia was in seventh

heaven after the race. The 32-year-old from

Parana had hit another milestone at his new

workplace.

“It’s very nice, the horse is very good

and was always comfortable in the race, and

got the job done. I’m very happy I won a first

Group 1 race in Singapore, it means a lot to

me,” said the 600-odd race winner, who will

always be remembered as the jockey who flew

in as a virtual unknown from Macau for one

ride in April 2018, for a 100% strike rate in the

Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) aboard the

Lee Freedman-trained Circuit Land (Mizzen

Mast).

“Shane told me to stay back as he’s a horse

who runs on stronger that way. There was not

too much pace, and I was able to follow a little

closer in midfield.

“I was lucky I had Countofmontecristo to

follow into the race as he’s such a nice horse.

In the last 600 metres, my horse quickened very

nicely.

“He came in too fast, though, as he stopped

once he got to the front, but the blinkers

improved him. They kept him going.”

While the feat of banking in the richest race

on the Singapore calendar had still not sunk

in, Baertschiger still kept his wits about his two

other runners, Preditor (Savabeel, ninth) and

I’m Incredible (Lope De Vega, 13th).

Without much surprise, it is the lacklustre

run of his reigning Singapore Horse of the Year

I’m Incredible that was the dampener.

“Preditor ran his usual honest race, but things

are getting tougher for him. I’m Incredible hasn’t

come up and I’ll give him a break for the rest of

the year, and bring him back next season,” he said.

“The vets have gone over him and there’s

nothing wrong with him. His trackwork is super

strong, but he is racing flat.

“He probably had a hard long second prep

and he needs a three-month break.”

After Aramaayo’s second win from seven

starts, his stakes earnings, which also includes

place earnings from two seconds and two

thirds, have leapt to around HK$680,000 for the

Aramco Stable.
