In 2012, Pakistan saw the a high number of casualties for dengue, with Lahore the most affected city. The country lost thousands of lives, millions were affected and terrorized due to severe dengue fever outbreak. This year, it has been predicted that the epidemic will be twice that of last year. The fatal fever, which spreads through the bite of the dengue mosquito, can be eradicated with the proper awareness by controlling breeding of the dengue mosquito.

(1.) This year, we want to combat the epidemic which is why Pakistan Medical Association, an organization of medical professionals in Pakistan, and Mortein, Pakistan’s #1 Mosquito killer, have taken a joint pledge to fight against dengue.

PMA in collaboration with Mortein are holding its 24th Karachi City Marathon on 24th Feb 2012 at 8am, with a mission to eradicate dengue virus. The pledge aims at creating complete awareness with the citizens of Pakistan about the fatal fever including identifying symptoms, correct treatment, preventive measures. Approximately 4000+ athletes, special persons and health conscious will participate at the marathon and run 13 miles (285 yards), starting and ending at PMA House Karachi.

(1.) Dengue fever is caused by a deadly virus which is transmitted by the Female Mosquito Aedes Aegyptii, which intakes blood as their nutrition to fertilize their eggs and breed. There are four stereotypes, DEN 1, 2, 3 and 4. All four were found in Punjab in 2011. Weak immune system in the body, results in death. The incubation period is 2-8 days.

SYMPTOMSFEVER : Continuous, High grade, Saddle-Back nature, usually breaks between day 4 and 7.PRODOME : Malaise and headaches as well as lethargy is felt.FEATURES : Body aches, Arthralgia, Myalgia, Nausea, Anorexia, Vomiting, Relative Bradycardia and uncomfortable eye movements and Lymphadenopathy. RASH : Maculopapular, morphs with time, spreads from Trunk outwards and desquamates on resolution.

(3.) CONTROLS•FEVER : Acetaminophen is the drug of choice. Paracetamol is also used. Apirin and NSAIDS are NOT to be used.•PAIN : Acetaminophen also reduces pain from Myalgia and Arthralgia.•REHYDRATION : Drink plenty of liquids to prevent Dehydration from Vomiting and High Fever (Sweating).•THROMBOCYTOPENIA : Transfusion of Platelets becomes necessary if patient is having active bleeding or Platelet count is below 20,000 /L.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES•Do not sit near possible breeding areas during the hours of Sunrise and Sunset.•Drain off pots of water in Kitchens, Bathrooms, Gardens and Work place.•Dispose off garbage tightly wrapped in paper bags so as not to attract Mosquitoes.•The dengue mosquito is attracted by the body odour, carbon dioxide and heat emitted from the humans. Hence, use repellent lotions and wear covered clothing and use Mortein NaturGard repellent at all times.•Spray Moquito killing aerosols all over house, in pots in Garden and swimming pools or stagnant water bodies.• Use best quality pest control products like Mortein.
