Mr. NobodyBy Anonymous I know a funny little man,     As quiet as a mouse, Who does the mischief that is done     In everybody’s house! There’s no one ever sees his face,     And yet we all agree That every plate we break was cracked     By Mr. Nobody.

’Tis he who always tears out books,     Who leaves the door ajar, He pulls the buttons from our shirts,     And scatters pins afar; That squeaking door will always squeak,     For prithee, don’t you see, We leave the oiling to be done     By Mr. Nobody.

The finger marks upon the door     By none of us are made; We never leave the blinds unclosed,     To let the curtains fade. The ink we never spill;   the boots     That lying round you see Are not our boots,—they all belong     To Mr. Nobody.

My First Best FriendBy Jack Prelutsky

My first best friend is Awful Ann— she socked me in the eye. My second best is Sneaky Sam— he tried to swipe my pie. My third best friend is Max the Rat— he trampled on my toes. My fourth best friend is Nasty Nell— She almost broke my nose.

My fifth best friend is Ted the Toad— he kicked me in the knee. My sixth best friend is Grumpy Gail— she's always mean to me. My seventh best is Monster Moe— he often plays too rough. That's all the friends I've got right now— I think I've got enough.

Noisy Noisyby Jack Prelutsky

It's noisy, noisy overhead, the birds are winging south, and every bird is opening a noisy, noisy mouth.

They fill the air with loud complaint, they honk and quack and squawk— they do not feel like flying, but it's much too far to walk.

The Best Game the Fairies Play

The best game the fairies play,     The best game of all, Is sliding down steeples—     (You know they’re very tall). You fly to the weathercock,     And when you hear it crow, You fold your wings and clutch your things     And then let go! They have a million other games—     Cloud-catching’s one, And mud-mixing after rain     Is heaps and heaps of fun; But when you go and stay with them     Never mind the rest, Take my advice—they’re very nice,     But steeple-sliding’s best!

The Spring Storm

The sky has given over its bitterness. Out of the dark change all day long rain falls and falls as if it would never end.

Still the snow keeps its hold on the ground. But water, water from a thousand runnels! It collects swiftly, dappled with black cuts a way for itself through green ice in the gutters. Drop after drop it falls from the withered grass-stems of the overhanging embankment.
