Out of Uniform day to support the Leila Rose Founda!on: Friday 14th

August (Week 5)

On Friday 14th August we will be having a ‘Pink Theme Free Dress Day.’ The day has been co-ordinated by the

schools who took part in the Student Leadership Congress. At Mortlake College our project was led by our 5-7

leaders (Sophie Lehmann, Charloe Gartland, Kaitlyn Fowler, Amy Hughes, Ollie Mahncke and Taine DeManser),

and they will be promo+ng next week’s out of uniform day also. It would be terrific if all students

who choose to come dressed in the pink theme would make a gold coin dona+on to the Leila Rose Founda+on,

which raises funds to help the families of children affected by a rare cancer. Many schools in the district are tak-

ing part in the day as a lead in to the ‘ALL STARS Football Game’ on Sunday August 16th in Warrnambool.

P-4 PLACE Halls Gap Zoo Highlights

Last Friday, all of the Prep to Fours went on an excursion to the Halls Gap Zoo. It was a fantas+c ex-

cursion and we were very lucky with the weather.

Here are some highlights from the 1-2C class.

Oscar was a python. The p-4’s all got to hold Oscar. He was almost as tall as a grown-up! Before we

got to hold him we had to put some handwash on. He was very smooth. He is cold blooded. He likes

the warm sunshine, and he weighed 3 kilos. Caleb

The crocodile habitat was in a cage with lots of salty water. A wonky tree, two of them were in there.

It was a whopper! There were 5 babies. They were brown. I saw the Mum croc rise above the water.

Josh

At the zoo we saw Oscar the snake, kangaroos, cheetahs, crocodiles, and a bison! There were also

horses, monkeys, wombats, and the wombat was sick. The best part of the zoo was the cheetahs. We

split into groups to walk around. There were some more animals that were scary, like the bison and

the goat – he was feisty! The last one was the meerkats. Sam

On the way to the zoo on the bus me and Rose were drawing in my book. Rose told me that her house

was not near school. We seen lots of animals at the zoo. On the way back I sat next to Riley and we

had M&Ms because my Mum was siIng behind me and Riley! On the way back Declan had a sleep,

so did AIisha. We were on the grade 1/2 bus. The preps went on the mini bus and the 3/4’s went on

another bus. Holly

The wombats were sick, so people were puIng money in a box. And then we went to see the meer-

kats, they were furry. We all had a great day! Carl

Cheetahs have paerns and there were two of them. Their colours were yellow and black. They had

lots of green grass to run around in. They were lying down and when we came back one of them was

running around. They looked warm. Kane

We saw lots of peacocks at Halls Gap Zoo. The peacocks have lots of feathers and they have lots of

colours, like blue, green, grey. They walked around and they were very prey. Sarah

Warrnambool Eisteddfod Deba!ng

Last week Mortlake College had a number of students from Years 5-11 par+cipate in the Warrnambool Ei-

steddfod Deba+ng compe++on. The Eisteddfod provides a great opportunity for students to develop their

public speaking skills in a formal situa+on and to experience compe+ng against other schools. Our par+cipa-

+on followed a series of class debates that had been held at school in Term Two to explicitly teach all stu-

dents skills in public speaking and deba+ng.

The Year 5/6 team of Jaime Killen, Taine DeManser and Ned Quail took the nega+ve

side in the debate 'That public speaking should be compulsory in schools'. They

won the debate, and congratula+ons should go to Taine DeManser for receiving the

trophy for 'Overall Best Debater' at the Year 5/6 level.

The Year 7/8 team consisted of Keely Moore, Issac Fowler and Olivia Anders. They

argued the affirma+ve side in the debate 'That beauty maers more than ability in

society today'. Whilst they did not win their debate, they learnt a lot from the ex-

perience, including the difficulty of some debate topics! Thanks very much to Sam

Williams for ac+ng as chairperson in this debate.

Our topic for the 9/10 debate was 'That ter+ary educa+on should be free' and we argued the nega+ve side.

The successful team in this debate consisted of Kismet McCarroll, Jackie Cooper and Phoebe Calvert. Not

only did they win, but they were third overall in their sec+on.

The final debates of the week were the Years 9-12 impromptu debates. We had two teams compe+ng. The

first team consisted of Gerald Monteith, Cooper Lower and Jacob Pugh; and our second team was Jake Tan-

ner, Bree Cummins and Asha Kelly.

'That poachers make the best gamekeepers' was the topic for our first team, and we were given the nega+ve

side. The debate was a +ght contest but the boys narrowly won based on their delivery. 'That sport would

be beer without sponsors' was the topic for our second team. The three team members performed really

well and were unlucky to lose to a Warrnambool College team. This was reinforced by the fact that this

team were awarded third best team overall in the impromptu sec+on.

Dear Parents

We have begun the subject selec+on process for your child’s course of study in 2016, and want you to

be involved as much as possible. There are many choices to be made, and we do not want your child to

make choices that will limit their op+ons in terms of career choices or ter+ary study aSer school.

At Mortlake College we give students who are in Year 10 in 2016 the opportunity to study a VCE sub-

ject. This is designed to give students a chance to understand the expecta+ons of VCE, and to get a

‘headstart’ on their VCE course. However, this opportunity is dependent on the individual student, and

their performance in 2015. In certain circumstances the opportunity may be given to Year 9 students.

Students entering Years 11 and 12 have the choice of pursuing either a tradi+onal VCE course of study,

or an ‘Applied Learning’ course of study.

Students wishing to pursue a tradi+onal VCE course will be expected to select six VCE subjects at Year

11, and five VCE subjects at Year 12. English must be studied at Years 11 and 12, and Maths must be

studied at least un+l the end of Year 11.

Students wishing to pursue the ‘Applied Learning’ course at Year 11 will complete the following: English

(General or Founda+on) Units 1 and 2; Maths (General or Founda+on) Units 1 and 2; Food Technology

or Product Design and Technology (Wood) Units 1 and 2; a School Based Appren+ceship or TAFE course

(or both); VCAL; and another VCE subject of their choice. In Year 12 these students have two op+ons:

they can transfer into a full VCE course or they can con+nue their ‘Applied Learning’ Course and com-

plete an Intermediate VCAL cer+ficate in Year 12. This would involve students studying subjects dealing

with work related skills and personal development skills, along with numeracy and literacy. They would

also con+nue their SBA/VET subjects. The VCAL program allows students to develop work related skills

and pursue further pathways beyond school including TAFE, traineeships and appren+ceships.

Further details about both courses are contained within the 2016 Mortlake College VCE Course Selec-

+on Guide that your child has been given. As part of the course selec+on process and to ensure that

parents are fully informed, we would also like to have an interview with you and your child before their

course for 2016 is finalised. This applies to all students and their parents entering Year 11 and 12 in

2016. Parents of students in Year 10 in 2016 are also welcome to request a course selec+on interview.

In the mean+me, if you have any queries please feel free to contact me at school. Alterna+vely, con-

tact your child’s house mentor, or Mr Croucher, our Careers Co-ordinator. Your child has also been giv-

en an ini+al subject selec+on sheet and ques+onnaire to complete so that we can begin planning for

2016. As is the case each year, not all subjects in the selec+on booklet will be guaranteed to run, as this

will be dependent on student choices and teacher alloca+ons. It is important for students to consider

which subjects they will enjoy, and which subjects are prerequisite subjects for a par+cular ter+ary

course or profession.

Yours sincerely

Anthea Good
