Each of these successful personalities suffered knockbacks while toiling away at their craft before catapulting to national fame. ARIA winners Eskimo Joe were dumped by their record label, Network Ten’s 7pm Project host Carrie Bickmore never thought she had the face for television, and Bec & Bridge were snubbed for two years before David Jones decided to represent them. But the myth of ‘‘overnight success’’ still persisted, Mosman author Sam Folder said. ‘‘People look at successful identities in the entertainment world and assume they had every- thing handed to them on a plat- ter,’’ he said. ‘‘The truth is they got to where they are through sheer hard work, stubborn persistence and, oc- casionally, a bit of good luck.’’ Mr Folder, who owns Red Hill Press, has recently published three titles aimed at giving young people a realistic insight into how to crack the music, television and fashion industries. The Get Your Break series fea- tures in-depth interviews with up- and-comers such as fashion de- signer Jacqui Alexander (who launched Skinny Nelson in 2008), and industry heavyweights such as singer-songwriter Ben Lee, and television stars Yumi Stynes and Ally Langdon. ‘‘I wanted to give people a no- holds-barred look at what it takes to get a break - all my subjects broke down the myth that getting a job in television or fashion is about who you know,’’ he said. Mr Folder said while some presenters were in ‘‘the right place at the right time’’ - such as Toasted TV co-host Kellyn Morris who was spotted by Network Ten producer Stephen Tate at an Aust- ralian Idol audition - success usually boiled down to ‘‘dedi- cation and perseverance’’. ‘‘Look at people like Jules Lund (Getaway) - he hired a personal trainer and forked out $10,000 to do every television presenting and voice-over course in Aust- ralia to get a gig on TV,’’ Mr Folder said. Confidence, self- belief, an entrepreneurial mindset, passion for their craft and a stubborn resistance to never take no for an answer were com- mon traits among the identities. It took Mr Folder, who has a PR and creative writing background, 11 months and close to 100 inter- views to compile the series. He chose a cross-section of indi- viduals with whom today’s gener- ation of 15 to 24-year-olds could relate. The books are aimed at educating high-school students about the reality of landing jobs in the entertainment industry. He said he was inspired to write the series after his high school careers adviser failed to give him useful information on landing a TV role.
