    MosonMagyaróvár

The town of Mosonmagyaróvár is situated at the crossing point of the rivers Mosoni-Danube and Lajta, at about 30 km from Bratislava and 80 km from Vienna. The international cycle path (EuroVelo No. 6.) along the Danube leads through the town. The town’s important tourist attraction is its thermal water. The thermal spa fed by this thermal water is open all year round. The water is acknowledged medicinal water and belongs to the five best quality ones in Europe according to its classification.Mosonmagyaróvár was already known in the Roman age as a watch-post along the limes under the Latin name Ad Flexum. After the Conquest it was used as a reeve-site, later it became a shire town. Moson and Magyaróvár united in 1939 and together with the village of Lucsony that joined Magyaróvár as early as 1905 they constitute the town of today with a population of 32.000 people. The Fort of Óvár is a construction with an irregular quadratic ground-plan built in the 13th century upon the ruins of the Roman settlement and reconstructed several times since then. In 1818 an agricultural-type high level educational institution was founded in the fort by Prince Albert Casimir of Saxony-Teschen, the son-in-law of Queen Maria Theresa of the House of Habsburg. The uni-versity of today to be found in the fort (the Western-Hungarian University’s Department of Agriculture and Food Industry) is its legal successor. On the Deák Square stands the Baroque statue erected in 1744 for Saint John of Nepomuk. The one-storey house of the former archducal castle of the Habsburgs can also be seen on the square. The Town Hall of our days, the former ‘Hundred House’ was built in 1892 in Neo-renaissance style. The main adornment of the Fő Street is the so-called Cselley-house. In the building with even Gothic marks, there is the Hansági Regional Museum housing an arts and crafts ex-hibition, the Gyurkovics-Collection, and in the wagon-vaulted cellar, a ‘lapi-darium’ (ancient stone collection) from the Roman age.In the Magyar Street – pedestrian street – stands the Saint Gotthard parish-church built in the 18th century. The crypt of the church is the burying-place of Archduke Friedrich of Austria, member of the House of Habsburg and his wife. The sculpture of St. Ladislaus next to the church was set up by public subscription in 1993. The Hansági Museum that is one of the first founded museums in the country stands opposite to the Town Hospital. The parish-church St. John of Nepomuk in Moson is a building in Baroque style built in the middle of the 18th century. In front of the church the sculpture of King St. Stephen was inaugurated on 20th of August 2000, on the Millennium Memorial Day.

The process has begun many years ago as a result of which the newest attrac-tion of Mosonmagyaróvár (Latin: Ad Flexum), the FUTURA Interactive Science Advanture Centre could open up its doors in the summer of 2012.In the building of the near 300 years old granary an interactive natural science centre will be established, where visitors can get familiar with the natural sci-ences through the four elements: water, air, earth and fire. The extremely exciting exhibitions of FUTURA will help the children and teen-agers to learn while playing interesting and adventuresome games. Visit FUTURA with your family, class or friends and live an extraordinary experi-ence.The Gyásztér (Mourning Square) is in Ipartelep. On this square there is a sym-bolic cemetery with a three-figure monument to the memory of the victims died in a volley of shots during the 1956 revolution.

  • Mosonmagyaróvár and szigetköz

The largest island of our country is Szigetköz, surrounded by the rivers Dan-ube and the Mosoni-Danube. It is called ’the gift of the Danube’, since it was built by the alluvial deposit of the river. The nature-loving tourists are welcome by the rich flora and fauna of the region.

The lovers of water-tours can wander through the Danube-branches fringed with forests, where the various reaches promise unforgettable experiences for those arriving by kayak or canoe. The visitors can enjoy the romantic scenery of the Mosoni-Danube on boat trips as well. In addition to the Danube-branches, the several quarry lakes with the promise of a fine catch make Szigetköz a real fishermen’s paradise. The section through Szigetköz is a part of the international cycle-route along the Danube; however the low-traffic dams and side-roads are also suitable for bicycling. Between Mosonmagyaróvár and Győr, along the bicycle route Eurovelo 6 the tourists receive information at nice service areas about the built and natural values of Szigetköz. Organized by the riding stables of the area, the jaunting-rides and riding-tours to the island are very popular. In Dunakiliti there is a 9-hole golf course awaiting the lovers of golf. Szigetköz is rich in game, and this fact holds out the best hopes for hunters arriving into the area of bagging deer, stag and even wild boar.

The rich selection of accommodations in Szigetköz satisfies every demand, since it is ranging from the four star castle hotel, through wellness hotels and B&Bs to campsites. Besides, good restaurants and diverse services tempt the tourists.

    dunaKiliti

Dunakiliti is a well-known settlement from the Árpád-ages because of its agriculture and industry. It is located the north part of the Szigetköz, and has many important spectaculars; Millenium-oak (1896), Neo-gothic catholic church with colorful windows, the birthplace and bust of László Batthyány-Strattmman, „the doctor of the poor”, and a Chapel of Pledge. Halászi

Halászi lies in Szigetköz, on the bank of the Mosoni-Danube, 4 km away from Mosonmagyaróvár. The village is deservedly called as the gate of Szigetköz because we can enter the ’world of thousand island’ through the Halászi-bridge. The bridge was built in 1905-1906 and had to be re-built three times up to now. In World War 2 it was blown up and it col-lapsed in 1992. In 2010 the third, a modern, broad bridge with cy-cle lanes in both directions was built replacing the former small and narrow one. The name of the settlement (halász = fisherman) reflects its location as well as its past: its olden inhabitants delivered fish to the Magyaróvár estate. In the centre a large-sized Baroque church towers over two houses with rural-baroque pediment. The frescoes of the church were painted by Maulbertsch-pupils. There are a country tavern and a leisure park established at the bank of the Mosoni-Danube river and they are popular targets of those arriving on the river or by bicycle, longing for a bathe or a boat trip. The riding stable and adventure-park in Babos-ranch also offer many opportunities for active recreation.

    Hédervár

The village settled in the Szigetköz in Győr-Moson-Sopron country halfway along the road connecting Győr and Mosonmagyaróvár. Its emergence can be associated with the German Héder – the founder of the Héderváry fam-ily – moving to Hungary. It was first mentioned in a charter in 1210. In spite of the relatively late written mention it is certain that it had been a village centuries before. It may have been the only village in the Szigetköz, which has survived at its original location in the Arpadian age. The Héderváry fam-ily established a family centre on the so-called “Jewish hill” as early as in the 13th century. It started to flourish at an early time, and its castle was also further extended, and the “Boldogasszony” chapel (Blessed Virgin), its fam-ily funeral place was also built in the first half of the following century. After the extinction of the male line of the Héderváry family, Katalin Héder-váry received the rights of a male heir, and the estate fell into the hands of the Viczay-Héderváry family. The 18th century brought along reconstruction in the life of the oppidum. The castle was reconstructed intro a chateaux, and a beautiful park was created around it

    JánossoMorJa

Jánossomorja is situated at the meeting point of the Hanság and the Mo-son-Plains. The small town counts 6000 residents and was established in 1970 by uniting of three villages (Mosonszentpéter, Mosonszentmiklós and Pusztasomorja). People lived here on the edge of the Hanság’s sea of marshes even before the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian basin, which is proven by several archeological finds. Ethnic German settlers were only brouht here in large numbers by the Habsburg owners of the Óvár estate following the Turkish wars (16th century). As a result of the resettlement in 1946, more than 4000 ethnic German inhabitants were forced to leave Mosonszentjános and Mosonszentpéter. The people who were expelled were replaced by ethnic Hungarian settlers deported from Northern-Hunga-ry and some territories of present-day Slovakia.

    KiMle

This village founded by three different natoins: hubgarian, croatien and german peole were settled down here. Kimlee is cut by the river Mosoni-Danube The trimmings on the church of Magyarkimle are from the 13 th century. Very close to the church is standing a 120-year-old linden tree and the Statue of Trinity. The sclupture of King Béla the 4th was stood in 2001 to the occason of the Millenary. On the way to the cemetery of Horvátkimle a chestnut-allee were planted, as a memory of the heroes died under the 2nd World War. Among the trees there are 12 wooden monuments: stations of the cross, made by András Balázs wood-carver. In the cemetery lies the famous priest and poet, Mate Mersic. The new church of Novákpuszta was sanctified in 2006. The well-known pilgrim rout (St. Jacob) can be found also here in Kimle. Many various programmes are organized in the village, including two dragonship competitions in each year. Treatful amusement for everyone!

    lébény

Lébény is situated in the vicinity of the highway M1, which connects Buda-pest with Vienna. It is an independent large village, the borders whereof are surrounded by the Hanság and the river Rábca. Lébény is also an organic part of the bicycle road system in the Szigetköz region. The territory of Lébény has been continuously inhabited since the prehistoric era. The fortress and the cemetery of Quadrata-Barátföldpuszta preserve the memory of the Roman age. Lébény was first mentioned in a charter in 1199. In the main square of the village the notable relic of our Romanesque architecture, the parish church stands, that was founded in honour of St. Jacob by Bailiff Pot. The three-nave, basilica-style church, erected in the early 13th century keeps its original structure up to now. It is mighty and majestic yet exquisite in its grey rigour, with even walls of the main front and with the jamb-lining of the main gate decorated with richly carved work. The lakes, the beautiful, flowery oak forest and the vast desiccating marshlands surrounding the village are all among the ornaments of Hungary offering great opportunities for active re-laxation. The ancient Hanság lawn territory is a landscape protection area.

    levél

The first documentation - in german language (1410, „Kalthostan”) and the first in hungarian (1425, „Lever”) - of Levél can be found in the Capitular Archive in Bratislava (Sk).Traditionally the name „Levél” comes from the words „Lővér”, „Lever”, which reminds of the Pecheneg border-wardens and archers. After the habitants were charioteers, couriers and postmen from the fort of Magyaróvár. That’s why the village got the name „land of the letter-men” (Letter=levél). Under the assault of the Turkis army (1529) the region was emptied, Győr and Moson County were destroyed. In 1570 King Miksa I. resettled the area with saxons of Württenberg. They were roman catholics and spoke german. Later the settlement was owned by two noble families, the Forgách and the Zichy. From 1763 Levél was Habsburg domain, Mária Krisztina (daughter of Mária Terézia) owned it from 1773.

    liPót

In the last centuries Lipót was a famous fishervillage. The fishermen of Lipót along with the ‘beluga-catchers’ of Szigetköz had their own stand in the fish-markets in Vienna and Bratislava. The fishermen of Lipót worked in groups with traditional tackles. Another well known trade was the gold-washing. At the beginning of the 19th century there lived 39 gold-washers in Lipót. The village had 6 watermills and many people lived from ship towing, ship-ping or worked as a ferryman. Today the small village of 700 residents lives mainly on tourism. In 2009 the village won a gold medal in the European floral competition Entente Florale. From north the settlement is bounded by a 70-hectare, water-lily-covered mort lake. On the shore of the lake a study-trail with rain-shelters, rest areas and lookouts for bird watching is waiting for the hikers. The shady alley of chestnut trees along the road to Darnózseli is also picturesque. The main tourist attraction of Lipót is the thermal spa and aqua park, which is fed by a spring of 65 °C breaking up from a depth of 2000 meters. There was an appalling flood on the Danube in 1954 that destroyed most buildings in Lipót. Therefore umpteenth in its history the village had to be rebuilt again. The Baroque Roman Catholic church was built in 1777. The main altarpiece is a masterwork of Maulbertsch, who used to work and live in Győr at this period.

    raJKa

Its first written record dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. Ac-cording to traditions its name was ‘Rákfalva’ (Crab village), which referred to the crabbers living here sometime. The name of Ragendorf created by German settlers derives from it. The village was also entitled to hold fairs but its flourishing was ended by the world wars. However positive effects of being a frontier settlement have been increasing recently. The most remark-able sight of the village is the Roman-Catholic church. Its tower was built in the 13th century on the ruins of a Roman-age watch tower. In front of the church there is a Calvary built in Baroque style. The Zichy-mansion is a late Baroque monument. The Lutheran church obtained its present form in the 18th century. In the vicinity of the village a statue-park can be found. The settlement is a popular starting-point of water tours on the Danube.

The town’s oldest building of the Middle Ages , the Cselley –Mansion houses the arts and crafts exhibition of the Hansági Museum since 1982 together with the Gyurkovich collection, that contains Hungarian paintings from the 19th and 20th century. In the Lapidary of Roman Stones visitors can see gravestones, and there are some interiors from the 19th century in the main building.

The historical biulding is standing on a basis from the Roman-ages and sur-rounded by the branches of the Lajta. The castle was strengthened in some period of the history, but there was no material in this area, so it must be used its own walls; its irregular rectangle shape also allows us to suppose that the original shape was a pentagon. In 1818 Albert Casimir the hus-band of Maria Christina and son in-law of Maria Theresia established an agricultural higher school, which is the Department of Agriculture and Food Industry of the University of West Hungary nowadays.

The Mosonvármegyei Museum of Mosonmagyaróvár with its 130 years of history belongs to one of the oldest museums of Hungary. It contains the findings of Mosonmagyaróvár and surroundings; from the Bronze Age until the Midlle Ages, consumer goods, documents, arms, and photographs up to now as well. Consequently here you can find the permanent arheological, local historical, etnographical exhibition.

Presumably Knight Héder already had had a castle built in the middle of the 12th Century, which had probably been made of wood and had stood on the so called „Jewish Hill” rising at the end of the recent castle park. The edifice itself had been destroyed during the Tartar invasion. In 1521 Ferenc Héderváry lost the estate due to disloyalty but later on the propri-etary rights of the estate reverted to János Héderváry, who had the fortified castle reconstructed in Renaissance style. It received its recent Baroque form in the second half of the 18th Century, then later on, in the 19th Century Károly Khuen-Héderváry applied the signs of Romantic style but the former Baroque exterior was soon restored. The English park surrounding the cas-tle was established under the personal direction of the Englishman Bernard Petri, who also introduced exotic trees here like the Chinese gingko tree and the American magnolia.

The church is located 20 kilometres from Győr, Győr-Moson-Sopron County. The roman building is one of the most important architectual memorial of the medieval Hungary. It was built int he 12-13th century and destroyed under the Tatar wars and soon King Ottokár’s war. In 1631 the pulled down church was taken over by the Jesuits. Its most spectacular parts: the facade, the main-and side door, the windows, the inner and external carvings.
