Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church The Luck of the Irish

There was a time in my life when I used to love to travel. As a country, my favorite is Ireland. I know a lot probably has changed since I went there but it was a very magical place to visit. There was such a deep spirituality that was present. And rainbows all the time! We took the tour of Ireland and it remains my favorite journey outside of the United States. While Italy has an amazing amount of my heritage, it has become a little too commercial at times. The Celtic Cross is an important element which was originally created by the good Saint Patrick. As Catholics, sometimes we err on one side or the other. We can be so conservative that we close the door and don't allow anyone into the faith, or we can be so liberal and open-minded that our brains fall out. Saint Patrick was someone who held onto the faith but also opened it up for others to appreciate. The people in Ireland were known for being Druids. And the Druids worshiped the sun. They believed that it was a god. St. Patrick had a way to redirect them to the Son. He took the cross of Jesus Christ and placed the round figure of a sun over it. So, when the people worshiped the sun, they worshiped the Son. It was an ingenious way of bringing pagans to Christ. To open our minds and find something in their lives that would attract them to the faith. That is the secret to success in most things. We celebrate this essential dogma of our faith today. That God is three divine Persons in one holy God. The fact that there are three persons, reminds us that there is 'relationship'. It isn't necessarily one person who makes all the rules. There is a balance between the three. And the best way to describe it came from Saint Augustine, the Most Holy Trinity is best understood in the life of a family. There is a father, mother and child. Remember that both male and female are created in the image of God. So, both have attributes of God. The problem in our culture today is our definition of 'family'. In the sense of God, it is a permanent and eternal commitment to one another. In the sense of humanity, there seems to be entirely too many ways to fall out of relationship. I know marriage is very difficult, and it is true that only God can make a successful marriage. So, let's remember to pray for those families that do resemble the Most Holy Trinity. May we see the image of God present in them. True love endures.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity - Gospel Reflection by Bishop Parkes - 6.7.2020

Our belief in the Holy Trinity

This weekend we celebrate the solemnity of the Holy Trinity - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Trying to understand the Holy Trinity is a mystery, yet it’s a fundamental teaching of our Catholic faith that we profess each Sunday when we come to Mass.

The belief in God and the relationship to his son, Jesus Christ, is found in undoubtedly the one of the most often quoted scripture verses in the bible, John 3:16, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” This scripture continues in verse 17, “for God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through him.”

The Jews feared a vengeful God, a God that would smite their enemies and punish all that disobeyed the laws given to Moses and those added by

the religious leaders over time. All God wants is to love us and invite us into a loving and personal relationship with Him that engages our heart, soul, mind and strength – in other words our whole being. And He commands us to love one another. We accept this belief as our baptismal call and recommit ourselves in the Sacrament of Confirmation when we receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit – the third person of the Trinity.

Our belief in the Holy Trinity – One God in three persons – leads us to begin our prayers by making the sign of the cross and saying, “in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”

be able to fully understand the

mystery of the Trinity, I invite you to

open your heart to the love and mercy

of God, and invite the Holy Spirit to

guide you in all parts of your life.
