Indian shares gained slightly on Monday as a rally in telecom shares was offset by profit-booking, a session after the indices hit their highest since September. Telecom shares soared after a media report said Vodafone Group would likely finalize talks for a merger with Idea Cellular within a month, citing unidentified sources. Idea shares gained as much as 5.5%. Meanwhile, Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd rose as much as 9.9% after The Economic Times, reported the company was seeking to be part of an entity that would include Reliance Communications, Aircel and MTS. Marksans Pharma Ltd shares surge 19% to Rs48.10 after the company said in a notice to BSE that its Goa plant inspection by UK’s MHRA completed without any critical observations. IRB Infrastructure Development Ltd shares rise 4% to Rs237.35 after an investment trust sponsored by IRB Infrastructure Developers has received markets regulator Sebi’s approval to raise Rs4,300 crore through initial public offering. Umang Dairies Ltd shares rise 15% after huge block deal, Around 2.2 million shares or 10% stake of the company changed hands in two block deals. However, details of buyers and sellers were not known. BSE Metal index (up 2%) was the leading sectoral gainer, led by gains in Jindal Steel (up 8% at Rs 100), Tata Steel (up 4% at Rs 486) and SAIL (up 3% at Rs 62). Marksan Pharma surged 20% to Rs 49 on the BSE in intra- day trade after the company said UK health regulator has completed the inspection of Goa unit without any critical observations. The rupee opened at 67.08 a dollar. At 9.15am, the home currency was trading at 67.04, down 0.03% from its previous close of 67.02. India’s 10-year bond yield was at 6.863% compared to its Friday’s close of 6.852%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions. Asian currencies were trading lower. Philippines peso was down 0.33%, Japanese yen fell 0.26%, Indonesian rupiah 0.17%, Malaysian ringgit 0.11%, Taiwan dollar 0.08%. However, China offshore 0.1%. European stocks advanced with gains in banks and phone companies outweighing a slide in Unilever NV. Euro Stoxx 50 and CAC 40 gained 0.2% each, while FTSE was little changed. Exchange Toady Pre. Dealer's Diary BSE Sensex closed higher by 193 points, or 0.68%, to 28,662, while the Nifty 50 rose 58 points, or 0.65%, to 8,879. News: TCS says the proposed shares represent 2.85% of the total

Globally, gold fell 0.02% to $1,234.30 an ounce and silver declined 0.06% to $17.93 an ounce in Singapore. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 and 99.5% purity tumbled by Rs180 each to Rs29,700 and Rs 29,550 per 10 grams, respectively.

Within three weeks of budget announcement, the Union finance ministry on Monday started the process of listing three rail PSUs—IRCTC, IRFC and IRCON.

The govt is considering divesting a portion of the paid-up equity share capital through an IPO and has sought expression of interest from merchant bankers by 16 March.
