SOLTRI The demands for environmentally friendly sliding bearing which is maintenance-freeeven under harsh conditions and free from contaminations caused by grease or oilare increasing gradually.

MOSTUF composite bearings are self-lubricating sliding materials with high load-carrying capacity to be applied under slow speed rotating, oscillating andreciprocating movements.

MOSTUF composite bearings have excellent sliding performance when they areapplied to some place where lubrication is not possible or not allowed since theymaintain good wear resistance and low coefficient of friction.

    Introduction

MOSTUF composite bearings have excellent self -lubricating and wear resistanceduring non-lubricated conditions since they have various types of low frictionalbearing layers as per each application. Backing layer which is composed of filamentwound fiberglass-epoxy is non-corrosive entirely and can support maximum140MPa of dynamic load. They have strong resistance against shock, vibration loadand there is negligible stick-slip.

    Bearing Layer

MOSTUF composite bearings have two layers thatare manufactured by a filament winding process. And various bearing layers are available as perapplied conditions

Bearing layer of MOSTUF T is composed of aproprietary designed woven structure of PTFE andhigh strength synthetic f ibers with speciallyformulated solid lubricant additions.

MOSTUF composite bearings are slidingbearing to be applied in the condition of non-lubricated high load. They have excellentmechanical properties and fatigue strength.MOSTUF composite bearings are suitable forrotating, oscil lating and reciprocatingmovements under slow speed. And theyexhibit excellent performance in vacuum andunderwater circumstance.

Applications Mechanical PropertiesMechanical properties of MOSTUF T composite bearing is shown in Table 1.Fig.2 shows the test device for the testing of load-deformation of MOSTUF T bearing inaccordance with MIL-B-85560 specifications.Generally, composite bearing accompanies permanent deformation in addition to theelastic deflection under radial load. This permanent deformation results fromcompaction between bearing layer and backing layer. Fig.3 shows the relation betweenelastic deflection and permanent set under radial load.

Fig.5 - Dynamic coefficient of friction of MOSTUF T bearing(Tested by Powertech Labs Inc., B.C, Canada)

The dynamic coefficient of friction for MOSTUF composite bearing is between 0.03 ~ 0.12,depending upon load, type of movement, sliding speed, operating temperature, micro finishof mating surface. Fig.5 shows the change of dynamic coefficient of friction under oscillatingload. At the beginning of test, coefficient of friction is being kept up on steady-stateconditions

Bearing wear occurs due to many kinds of factors. Fig.6 shows the test results underbearing pressure of 60 MPa at room temperature. There shows rapid wear duringinitial thousands of cycles. During this period, there happens transfer of PTFE on thesurface of shaft and redistribution of fiber on the sliding direction, resulting intosmooth bearing surfaces. After some initial wear, wear rate shows steady progress.Direct wear stays under 0.12mm after 256,000 cycles.

Fig.7 shows the shaft and bearing after finishing all test cycles.Fig.8 shows contact area which was highly polished and journalcontact surface had a significant amount of wear debris(lubricantfilm) adhering to the contact face. Fig.9 shows close up view ofbushing center of contact surface. There did not appear to be anydamage to the bearing surface other than minor polishing.

  • Optimum performance for MOSTUF composite bearing can beachieved by specifying a length to inside diameter ratio(L/d) rangingfrom 0.5 to 2.0. When the values of L/d are between above ranges, wear debris can escape from the bearing easily and the bearingbecame less sensitive to shaft deflection and misalignment.

L/d values of more than 2.0 are not recommended but where longbearing has been indicated it is advisable to consider using twobearings with a small gap between them. If the value of the L/d is lessthan 0.5, there would a possibility for some cracking on the edge ofbearing due to stress concentrations.

Thermal PropertiesOperating temperature of MOSTUF composite bearing is between -100 ~ +160C. And coefficient ofthermal expansion is similar to the coefficient of thermal expansion of steel. So the bearing can exhibit itsperformance without separating from housing even though exposed extreme temperature change.

Chemical PropertiesMOSTUF composite bearings have resisting power to various kinds of chemical substances. Also they havedimensional stability even after exposed into sea water or fresh-water for a long time.

    Design Considerations

  • 12 / 13

Bearing PressureBearing pressure is defined as maximum load operated on the projected bearingarea. Load capacity will be declined as temperature rises and it will be increased astemperature goes down. And load capacity will be affected by the type of operatedload. Generally, load capacity of MOSTUF composite bearing is 140MPa whenuniform load is operated on the bearing and 100MPa under dynamic or oscillatingload that cause fatigue stress.

Bearing SpeedAllowable maximum speed for MOSTUF T composite bearing is 0.2m/s. It exhibitsexcellent performance when it operates at a slow speed under high load. In casebearing speed is very high, too much of frictional heat would be occurred andallowable bearing pressure would be decreased accordingly.

Bearing PVThe value of PV can be calculated by multiplying bearing pressure by bearingvelocity and it indicates surface running speeds and loads under which a bearingcan safely operate. Allowable PV limit for MOSTUF T composite bearing is 1.8MPa.m/s. Frictional heat and wear rate would be increased rapidly in case of over PV limit.

Shaft Material & LubricationThe hardness and micro finish of shaft have important effect on the performance ofbearing. The hardness of shaft should be minimum 35 HRc and micro finish shouldbe minimum 0.2~0.4 Ra in order to minimize wear rate while keeping low frictionalcoefficient. When roughly finished shaft is applied to a bearing, bearing wear rateswould be increased rapidly.

Because MOSTUF bearing does not require lubrication there is no need to worryabout lubrication and shaft seizure. We recommend shafts of chromium plated steelor stainless steel. The best way to increase durability of equipment is to use nitrifiedshaft.

If lubricants are used with MOSTUF bearings, they can emit heat on contact surfaceeasily and they can extend the life cycle of bearing by sending out wear particleswhich were flowed in from outside. And we recommend to use hydrocarbon oils andgreases. But do not use fluorocarbon oils and greases, as they may soften the PTFEfibers, increasing the bearing's wear rate.

Machining of ODWe recommend to grind the outside diameter of composite bearing which is composedof filament wound fiberglass-epoxy.

Machining of IDMachining of Mostuf bearing ID depends on the material of bearing layer. MOSTUF Tand MOSTUF F bearing can not be machined because their bearing layers consist ofPTFE fiber. MOSTUF P bearing which consists of filled PTFE Tape and MOSTUF Sbearing which consists of high strength synthetic fiber can be machined by lathe.

Cutting of BearingIt is desirable to utilize a diamond wheel in order to cut composite bearing materials. Incase of cutting MOSTUF composite bearing on a lathe, it should be cut from insidediameter in order to prevent any damage in bearing layer.
