Then we went into a little classroom. She told us to have a go at writing on the slate black board with a slate pencil. I thought it would be black because the pencil was black but it turned out white. I was surprised. Then we used a feather. We dipped it in the ink bottle. Later my group and I went into the Mirror Maze. It was scary and funny too because we always bumped into the mirror and because we couldn’t find the way out because all we see is you. Then we lost our parent but when we went out of the mirror maze we saw her. On the tram ride it was fun because it can go back and forwards. Dear Parents and Caregivers I trust you have had an enjoyable break with your family and friends during the school holidays and that the children are well rested and ready for another term of interesting learning. Last term culminated in many engaging events and activities to celebrate the end of our unit on Change. These included a trip to the museum, Motat, or having a shared lunch. This term science provides the focus for our learning as children investigate ‘Motion’ using the driving question “What makes it move?” It is part of the Physical World strand of the science curriculum and provides students with opportunities to develop knowledge and understanding about physical phenomena. “Knowing about physics enables people to understand a wide range of contemporary issues and challenges and potential technological solutions” (New Zealand Curriculum, Ministry of Education, 2007). Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori - Maori Language Week This year, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - Maori Language Week celebrates love and regard for the language using the central theme Arohatia te reo - Cherish the language. Whaea Claire (Winiana) and Whaea Sandra (Close) will be working with our staff and children to strengthen our ability to use, honour, speak and show our love for the language of our country. Arohanui Whaea Claire and Whaea Sandra. New Assembly Time Beginning next week, school assembly will be held every second Friday at the new time of 2.10pm. This change suits the scheduling of our Friday learning programmes better and we hope the new time will also suit you. The first assembly for this term will be held on Friday 27 July and the junior kapa haka group will perform for us. This will be a fitting celebration of te wiki o te reo Maori. New Staff A very warm welcome to Mrs Nicki Holland who is working with the new Year 0 class in Room 19 (previously the junior library). We welcome back Mrs Donna Montrose who has returned from her science fellowship and is working with the Year 1 class in Room 22. School Value - Obedience Our definition of obedience is ‘Willingness to obey rightful authority’. Obedience promotes safety and freedom. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to discuss with their children WHO and WHAT they should obey. Leadership Day Many people dream, but Sir Peter Blake set his mind to a goal and went for it, believing that "change comes through realising the vision and turning it into reality." This year, during Leadership Week 2012 from 22-29 June, our school worked with the theme “Dare to Dream” by inviting in two local people; Alison Taylor and Tony Mordaunt. They kindly shared with many Year 6 students, stories of how they lead and the journeys they travelled to get there. They challenged the children to dream and then set achievable goals. The children were also shown what a good leader looks like and encouraged to put this into practice by running lunchtime sport in the Junior Area of the school. Our sincere thanks to Alison and Tony for an excellent workshop.

“I learnt that if you are going to be a leader it is good to have a plan.” Murdoch. “If you want to achieve something and it is really hard to do you can do it, just never give up.” Sophie. “Dreams about doing something can change a lot” Barabei.
