Dear Friends in Our Fight,

First, I would personally like to thank you. You may not realize it yet, but your past, present and future involvement in the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure is making – and will continue to make – an impact for survivors, like me, as well as support persons. Your participation is also making an impact on our community. And, for those who have lost their battles with breast cancer, you are continuing their fight in the name of all women.

Just by opening this guide, and reading my words, you have become part of the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure family… and we welcome you!

Following my diagnosis in January of 2014, my life felt turned upside down. As a 31-year-old mother of two boys under the age two, the journey I needed to embark on appeared to be insurmountable. I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, in the days following my diagnosis, I was flooded with overwhelming support and love from my family and friends.

Suddenly, not only could I see the light at the end of the tunnel, it appeared to grow brighter week-by-week. You see, within a few days of my diagnosis, my best friend and my sister quickly organized a Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure team, Team Pink House. As the team roster grew to over 100 members, the donations grew as well. The momentum that our Race team gained helped to give me momentum each week through chemotherapy.

Our team made sure I knew I was not alone in this fight; we were getting through cancer together and we were going to use our story, as well as our team efforts, to help others. We all wanted to know we were helping the greater good, that we were reaching beyond our own circle to help our community and the fight against breast cancer. We wanted to know we were raising money for a cure and awareness that this disease has no boundaries; it does not discriminate. As a Race team Captain YOU will be bringing this very experience to your friends and family, too.

there is nothing more inspiring than feeling as though your actions matter - that moment when you feel that you are a part of something that is bigger than just you. Being a part of the Komen Philadelphia race for the Cure does this.

I hope that the Race for the Cure inspires you and impacts you as much as your Race team participation and fundraising actions will impact others. I wish you a successful and inspiring Race season. I look forward to walking the 25th Celebration Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure this Mother’s Day as a survivor… and with all of you.

With gratitude for your impact,

Jen Hearn

Why a Race Center is CriticalA Race Center is the channel through which each Race participant (team captains and members alike) engages family and friends in his or her Race activities. It is what inspires team recruitment, as well as drives donations. It is also where people make donations.

What Team Captains Should do FIRST in Their Race CenterAs a Team Captain you have two great portals for encouraging members to join, and supporters to donate to your team! Utilize your Team Page to inspire donations to your team fundraising, and your Personal Page to motivate personal contacts to help you achieve your individual fundraising goal.

•Set up your Team Page: Share inspirations and goals with your supporters and team members. Your messagesshouldmotivatepotentialmemberstoconnectwithyouandsay,‘THISistheteamIwant to join in 2015!’

JEN’SGEM: “Every fundraiser Team Pink house held, every donation, every share of our Team Page link on social media, every time my story was featured in the news… it helped my sense of purpose and pride to grow. It helped to give my loved ones and me strength and drive to push through my own breast cancer journey.”

Remember, Every Team Member has a Race CenterAs a Team Captain, you should encourage every team member to leverage the power of his or her Race Center for the same reasons you do! Make sure team members customize theirs.

Tips for Maximizing Your Race Center, Team & Personal Pages

•Start with how-to tools: These are available on the website and within your Race Center.

•Set up Team and Personal Pages immediately after you register: The sooner you personalize your page, the more people you can engage!

•Keep your pages fresh: Make updates and share news often via Facebook, Twitter, etc.

•Be visual: As they say, a picture or video is worth 1,000 words, especially when it comes to sharing the emotions and inspirations of a breast cancer journey.

•Encourage your contacts and supporters to visit your page often: Send them an e-mail or post on social media when you’ve added new pictures, reached/set a fundraising milestone, etc.

•Share best practices with team members: After you personalize your pages, and as you continue to update them, make notes of what works best for you – then share your own tips with team members to help them maximize the power of their own Race Centers and Personal Pages.

JEN’SGEM: “Walking down the Philadelphia Art Museum steps on Mother’s Day, carrying the survivors banner, looking out into a sea of people united for the same purpose… helped to make it even more clear that our team was supporting the greater good. I was surrounded by women and men from all walks of life. And we all had something in common. We are part of an elite family of survivors or support persons, and we all want to find a cure.”

STEP FOUR: FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE, FUNDRAISE! 7.4 Million People Depend on Teams to Raise Money Step by step, Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure teams have helped bring about many victories in the breast cancer movement:

Together, we have grown our local survivor family from a mere ‘handful’ to over 6,000 strong.

Together, we have raised enough money to fund free mammograms for more than 150,000 women in need in our neighborhoods.

Together, we have empowered researchers with approximately $22 million.

Together, we have infused $54 million into the fight right here at home, working so that EVERY person has access to the services that save lives.

But we still have quite a journey ahead. Today, 3.8 million women depend on Komen Philadelphia to empower them with education, service, and support… and embrace them in the hope of the cures. And we depend on TEAMS to empower us through their fundraising.

Where the Money GoesThe majority (75%) of our Race funds is used to advance Komen Philadelphia programs in our local service area. The remainder is used to empower science to find the cures. Some of the ongoing Komen Philadelphia initiatives empowered by team fundraising include:

•Komen Philadelphia Community Grants Program

•Sisters for the Cure

•Latinas United for the Cure and Hope for Generations at Esperanza College

•Asian-American Women’s Breast Health Initiative

•Young Survivors & The Big Pink Footprint

•Education & access to resources at health/community fairs

•“Dollar Defense” & Dietz & Watson Pretty In Pig school awareness & activism

•Survivor & caregiver programs

•Breast Health 101 & specialized educational programs for corporate & faith communities

Komen Philadelphia serves more than 7.4 million people in 15 counties:

•Delaware: Kent, New Castle, Sussex

•New Jersey: Camden

•Pennsylvania: Adams, Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Philadelphia, York

JEN’SGEM: “It was the general consensus that Team Pink house was raising money and awareness for Komen Philadelphia in hopes… that one day another group of loved ones didn’t have to watch their mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, niece, granddaughter, godmother, etc. go through the trials of cancer like my loved ones had to watch me.”
