PetrolclosetopricethreeyearsagoUK average petrol prices end 2008 close to wherethey were at the same time three years ago, reports the AA.

New Government figures show that, at the timeof peak prices during the summer, petrol sales fellmore than eight per cent, compared to the sametime last year.

Petrol averaged 87.79 pence per litre onMonday, compared to 88.27 on the same day in2005. Diesel has fallen on average to 99.72 penceper litre, last seen in November 2007.

With petrol hitting a record high of 119.7 penceper litre in July, a UK driver is on average now pay-ing nearly £16 less to fill up a typical 50-litre tank(£59.85 - £43.90). A family with two petrol cars isnow spending £68.39 less per month on fuel(£256.56 - £188.17).

New retail fuel sales figures released by theGovernment show that petrol sales in the thirdquarter of 2008, the period of peak prices, fell by8.2 per cent compared to the same time last year.Retail sales of diesel rose 1.8 per cent in the sameperiod, reflecting the desperate attempts of hard-pressed UK drivers to switch to more fuel-efficientvehicles and reduce their costs.

GadgetsmakeyoucarsickGADGETS given as gifts could lead to car-sicknesschaos for vehicle occupants.

Many thousands of Britons will have receivedpresents in the form of in-car entertainment andsat navs this Christmas.

But using such gadgets, as well as playing simplegames such as I Spy, can increase the chances ofpeople getting sick in cars, a study by transportresearch laboratory TRL and the esure car insurancecompany showed.

Based on a poll of 1,012 drivers, the researchshowed that 33 per cent of Britons have been sickin a car by the time they reach the age of 12.

In-car devices and the playing of games creates aconflicting sense of balance such as that experi-enced when trying to read books and maps in a carand which can lead to sickness, the researchshowed.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting atesure car insurance, said: “As well as being aninconvenience, car sickness can be dangerous, especially if it causes the driver to avert their atten-tion away from the road.

“Drivers and passengers need to understandwhat steps to take to prevent car sickness in orderto make their journeys more pleasant and theroads safer.’’

ManydriversgooverlimitFOUR in five motorists think they may have beenover the drink-drive limit on the morning after anight of alcohol, a survey has revealed.

And it is the over-65s who were most likely notto have considered they might be over the limit themorning after, the AA/Populus poll of more than11,000 drivers showed.

The survey also found that 47 per cent knowsomeone who drinks and drives and that 67 percent would notify the police if they were awaresomeone was getting behind the wheel havingdrunk excessively.

PPrriiccee ffoorr ppoowweerrFORD’S Kuga 2.5 Duratecfeatures the rip-snorting fivecylinder 200PS engine from thebrand’s Focus ST hot hatch.

Now normally, big, powerfulengines in SUV 4x4s aren’t anespecially good idea but with thiscar, things could be different. Thehandling is in a different leaguefrom other compact 4x4s ownersdownsizing from larger modelscould just find in this car exactlywhat they’re looking for.

With sales of large,performance-orientated luxury4x4s falling through the floor,Ford hope the Kuga’s time mayhave come. True, it doesn’t havethe badge equity to tempt thosewho may have decided that theirRange Rover Sports or PorscheCayennes just don’t suit thecurrent economic mood. But thistop petrol version certainly hasthe firepower under the bonnetand a standard of handling thatwill shock many used tolumbering, leather-lined offroaders.

Put your foot down in the Fordand sixty from rest will flash by in8.2 seconds on the way to a topspeed of 129mph. Go for theautomatic version and the figuresare 8.8s and 126mph. 300Nm oftorque gives it prodigious pullingpower too.

Bolt such a powerful 200PSengine into a Honda CR-V or aToyota RAV4 and, quite frankly, the result would be awful, atleast when it came to goinground corners. It says a great dealfor the basic Kuga’s dynamicexcellence that that isn’t the casehere. The ride is reasonably firmand that helps the Kuga resistbody roll when cornered

vigorously, plus it’s also less liableto become unsettled over bumpsin the road. The accurate steeringmakes it easier to position the cartoo. Show this car a straight,well-surfaced road and it evenserves up a good standard of ridecomfort and refinement. Ford’smarketing slogan for this car is‘feel the difference’ and youabsolutely can.

The pricing of the Kuga isinteresting. You’ll need a£24,000-£25,000 budget for thiscar, with a premium of around£1,200 being demanded on topof the base price if you want theautomatic version. That mightlook expensive at first glance butit won’t be a problem for thedown-sizing large SUV customers

that Ford is targeting. It’s also£10,000 less than Land Rover willcharge you for the comparablypowerful Freelander i6.

Sales of this top Kuga variantwill probably be modest – butperhaps they shouldn’t be. Itreally does make a lot more sensethan a much larger ‘sporty’ SUVthat needs twice as much powerto achieve pretty much the samekind of performance. Plus withthe 2.5-litre Duratec engine fit-ted, you can properly exploit allof this car’s impressive handlingability. The 2.0 TDCi diesel versioncontinues to make more sensebut if you allow your heart to ruleyour head, this top petrol modelis a tempting proposition.

IT’S pretty hard to take exceptionto MINI’s second generationConvertible. It looks sportier (andis), yet it’s cheaper to run andmore eco friendly. It offers morespace and plenty of hi-techfeatures. But best of all, it’s stilljust as much fun to drive as theoriginal. Some things neverchange.

With a raised shoulder line, highlighted by a chrome stripwhich extends around the bodyof the car, the MK2 MINIConvertible has a morepurposeful and dynamic stancethan its predecessor. The CooperS Convertible sets itself apartvisually through the presence ofan enhanced ‘powerdome’,which sits 20 millimetres higherthan the MINI Cooper’s bonnetand houses a large air scoop. Atthe rear end, large twin tailpipes,a large diffuser in the rearbumper and a two-piece rear foglamp mark it out.

FACTS

THE Toyota Avensis has always focusedon being solid and dependable andthe latest version follows that familiartheme.

In 1.8-litre petrol form, it delivershigh levels of comfort and refinementwith good performance given theengine size and strong economy.

Build quality is first rate, equipmentlevels are high and the interior is neatlydesigned. When Toyota finally gets ahandle on design flair and handlingverve, it’ll be unstoppable.

The 1.8-litre petrol engine acts asthe entry point to the Avensis range inthe UK. It employs Toyota’s latest gen-eration petrol engine technology whichis known as Valvematic. This is a pro-gression from the previous generationdual VVT-i powerplants because as wellas varying the valve timing accordingto throttle inputs, it can also adjust thevalve lift. The end result is greater effi-ciency manifested in better fuel econo-my and more power.

This 1.8-litre engine develops animpressive 147bhp and can sprint fromzero to 60 in 9.4s. Most notable, how-ever, is its torque, which gives far bet-ter flexibility at lower to mediumengine speeds than Toyota’s lessadvanced VVT-i powerplants did.

The engine sounds sweet enoughand doesn’t become harsh if you dohold on to the gears. Motorway refine-ment is strong. The engine is goodenough to raise questions over theneed for the 152bhp 2.0-litreValvematic engine that sits above it inthe range.

There are four Avensis trim levelsbut as a 1.8-litre Valvematic customer, your choice will be limited to entry-level T2 and the second rung TR.

The basic package includes air-con-ditioning, a 6-speaker stereo system, electric heated mirrors, an electronicparking brake and remote centrallocking. The TR is the most populartrim level in the whole range and itadds 17in alloys wheels, front foglights, automatic lights and wipers, cruise control with a speed limiter, electric rear windows and an AUXinput for an MP3 player.

Toyota isn’t offering a hatchback,

so buyers can either choose thesaloon or the Tourer estate at a premi-um of just under £1,000. All modelshave VSC+ stability control and anarray of airbags.

The advanced combustion systemon Toyota’s Valvematic engines comeswith major cost benefits. The 1.8-litreunit achieves economy or 43.5mpgon the combined cycle with CO2emissions of 154g/km.

This marks it out as one of the mostefficient engines of its size in the sectorand will go down a storm with thefleet customers that constitute the lion’sshare of the medium range market.

The Toyota’s Avensis has always beena car that you bought with your headwhile your heart wasn’t looking anddespite attempts to instil the latestmodel with some additional pizzazz, that seems unlikely to change.

The Avensis drives competently andis extremely well put together, whilethe Valvematic technology givesToyota’s petrol engines a real edge inefficiency over most rival units. In 1.8-litre form, it’s well-suited to the num-ber-crunching fleet managers whogreen light most purchases in the medi-um range sector but private buyersmight want a little extra excitement.

AA pprraaccttiiccaalleessttaattee wwiitthhrreeaall ssttyylleeWILL IT SUIT ME?

Before Honda’s Accord Tourer camealong, I was wondering when a carmaker was going to come up with anestate that was both stylish and prac-tical. Until this model arrived, manyfamily buyers either chose somethingpractical like a Mondeo Estate oropted for a sleeker ‘hatchback with abackpack’ like an Audi A4 Avant.

Lots of manufacturers claim to beable to offer estate cars with the bestof both worlds but I’ve found thatalmost all disappoint, if not aestheti-cally, then against the tape measure. So I was keen to judge this one.THE PRACTICALITIES

For me, it’s not the total amount ofspace you have but the way you canuse it that really matters and in thisrespect, this Honda comes up trumpswith its clever ‘One Motion’ systemfor easy access of what space there is.

The idea is that collapsing every-thing into a folded position should bea simple, quick, one-action, one-hand-ed operation. In rival estate cars, I’veoften found that’s not the case. Toaccess all of the load space, you haveto detach the rear head restraints andpull up the rear seat cushions beforefolding the rear backrest forward. It’s afiddly, time-consuming operation.

Thankfully, the Honda is quite differ-ent. Positioned on top of the 60:40-split rear seat backs are the operatingcatches, one either side of the car. To

fold either seat section, you simplypull the lever forward, which simul-taneously releases the seat back lockand automatically flips the headrestforward via an interlocking cable.

You continue to pull the seatbackforward and, since this is intercon-nected with the seat base via a slid-ing linkage, the effect is to flip theseat base up automatically into avertical position behind the frontseat.

Since the headrest is flipped for-ward, it comfortably clears the seatbase. There’s no messing about withseatbelts and anchor points either, since everything is integrallydesigned into the seat mechanism.

BEHIND THE WHEELThe cabin has been improved, rid-

ding the Accord of the rather reedy, lightweight feel of older versions.

The dashboard extends from thecentre console to sweep around thefront seats, giving the Accord’s inte-rior some character. The dash fea-tures floating backlit instrumentswith an LCD information screenhoused in the middle of thespeedometer dial.

The dash could use a central con-troller to rid it of all the buttonsthough.

Honda has spent a big proportionof the budget on the front seats, being both more supportive and

better able to dampen vibration.VALUE FOR MONEY

All Accord Tourer models are verywell equipped at prices starting ataround the £20,000 mark. The ver-sion that I tried, the ES GT, comeswith 17-inch alloy wheels, half-leatherseats, cruise control, aero kit, sportssuspension and climate control.COULD I LIVEWITH ONE?

I liked the Accord Tourer. No, it’s nothe most spacious medium-sizedestate you can buy but, if you want amodicum of style in your luggage car-rying life, it’s an alternative youshouldn’t ignore.

tistic that draws the most buy-ers in the Twingo Extreme’sdirection.

The problem is that theentry-level Renault Clio, analtogether larger and moreadvanced prospect, is worry-ingly close in value.

Still, the Extreme doesn’tshirk the challenge from itsbig brother in the equipmentstakes.

Even this entry-level carreceives the clever one-piecefolding rear seat, a CD stereowith steering wheel controls, front fog lights, electric frontwindows and a rev counter.

To step up from the Extremeto the plusher Dynamique, buyers will need a further

£900 butthe optionslist may bea moreentertain-ing placeto spendsome ofthatmoney. TheTwingo canbe orderedwith anintegratedBluetoothsystem andan MP3connectorin thegloveboxso you can

use all yourtechnological titbits in the car.Alternatively, there’s a host ofexterior tweaks available topersonalise your car includingUnion Jacks, racing stripes andchequered graphics.

The rising cost of motoringand growing environmentalconcerns have put small carsin the limelight but you haveto wonder whether Renaulthas missed a trick with theTwingo.

Don’t take this the wrongway, the car is fun to drive, highly manoeuvrable andwell-suited to its citycar rolebut with a little bit of visualsparkle, it could have been amuch more desirable option.

As it is, the entry-levelTwingo Extreme may showthe car in its best light.

As an affordable small carwith low running costsRenault’s offering makes goodsense, though those lookingfor a cute urban fashionaccessory may be drawn else-where.

A LIVELY driving experience, good interior space and lowcosts make Renault’s TwingoExtreme a citycar with plentyof appeal. There are morefashionable and flamboyantsmall cars out there but fewthat make more sense.

The Twingo Extreme gets theleast powerful engine in theTwingo’s line-up of 1.2-litrepetrol units. Above it sit the75bhp 1.2-litre 16-valver andthe 110bhp 1.2-litre TCE Turbobut the unit we’re dealing withhere is a 60bhp 8-valve 1.2.

This engine will get theTwingo to 62mph in 15 sec-onds and eventually trundle onto a 96mph top speed.Performance isn’t dramatic butit’s adequate for urban usagewhere the Twingo feelssprightly enough off the lineand up to 30mph or so helpedby its modest925kg kerbweight.

TheTwingoserves up apleasantlyurgent dri-ving experi-ence in thekind ofurban areaswhere it willbe predomi-nantly used.

The rideisn’t thecrash, bang, wallop, affairserved up bysome smallcars and isactually very composed on badsurfaces. The car changesdirection promptly and cancorner with the best citycarofferings partly as a result of itsuse of the chassis from theprevious generation Clio.

Interior space is reasonable, this generation Twingo being amassive 170mm longer thanthe original.

Perhaps the most interestingaspect of the interior is whatRenault has done to the rearseats.

The two rear seats can slide220mm fore and aft to priori-tise space for either people orluggage and they also fold flatand then tumble forwards, offering up to 959 litres ofspace in this guise.

Other noteworthy featuresinclude a centrally mountedinstrument cluster and nofewer than eleven storagespaces dotted around thecabin.

FACTSBY most accepted measures, theChevrolet Aveo is not a remarkablecar. It is, however, an important onein opening up new markets for theAmerican giant. Solidly built andattractively styled, it's a decent car, albeit one that inherits a good deal ofits engineering from its Kalos prede-cessor.

As makeovers go, the Aveo is oneof the cleverest we've seen. In profileit doesn't look too much different tothe Kalos, the five-door car's ratherodd drooping swage line beinginstantly familiar. Move round to thefront and the impression is utterly dif-ferent.

The Kalos's unhappy looking facehas been replaced with something awhole lot bolder. The upswept head-lamps and enormous double grille are

punctuated by a serious Chevy crosslogo. It's got about twice as muchattitude as any other small car youcould care to mention. The three-doormodel is even smarter, with the flanksbeing sculpted to incorporate pro-nounced flared rear wheel arches. Atthe back, there's one of the neatestrear lights clusters around.

The interior lacks the self-assuranceof the exterior and feels somewhatbuilt down to a price. The same canbe said of the Aveo's key rivals, though, and Chevrolet has specifiedand trimmed the interior wisely, givingit a sensible equipment count, fairlydecent materials and as much spaceand versatility as the design con-straints allow. It's not the biggest carin its sector, but the compact torsionbeam rear suspension means there's

plenty of useable room in the back. With two engines and three and

five door body styles to choose from,Aveo customers also benefit from adecent level of standard kit. "Plentyof car and equipment for a fair price"is part of Chevrolet's corporate philos-ophy and the entry-level Aveoadheres to that maxim with driverand passenger airbags, an MP3-com-patible CD stereo and wipers withintermittent facility.

Plusher trim levels add tinted glassand electric front windows. Optionsinclude 15-inch aluminium wheels, leather trim for the steering wheeland gear knob, an onboard computer, steering wheel-mounted audio con-trols and automatic climate control.

The Aveo campaigns on the basisof solid value for money, so it's no

great surprise to hear that prices startfrom around £7,535 and that runningcosts are screwed tightly down. Itmight surprise you that there's nodiesel model, given that the GMgroup has some great diesel enginesat its disposal, but it would be toughto make the additional cost of a dieselversion worthwhile to the typicallyhard-headed Aveo customer.

As it stands, the 1.2-litre modelwill return 51.4mpg which is goodand emit 132g/km of carbon dioxidewhich is not quite so stellar. The 1.4-litre variant, on the other hand, supsat a rate of 44.9mpg with CO2 emis-sions of 140g/km.

If you're at all style-conscious, thereare probably smarter options but notat these prices. A Moorland Motors-Demonstrator 1.25, 3dr, is £6,495.

BMW 3-SERIES

Executive class leader

uusseedd ccaarrssYour essential Friday guide to buying second-hand vehicles

The Gazette

BMW got back to basics with the E90generation 3 Series.

This was the car that shucked off thegimmicky styling and did what BMWshave always done best – concentratedon the engineering and let form followfunction.

The results have been spectacularlyeffective and are a testament to stick-ing to what you’re best at.

Used examples are now appearing indecent numbers but they do hold theirvalue well despite industry mutteringsof oversupply harming the car’s so-called exclusive image.

WHAT TO PAYThe first thing to look for when buy-

ing a used 3 Series is that the ownerhas specified metallic paint and thesevaluations take that into account.

No metallic means a difficult sale. With this in mind, expect to payaround £9,670 for a 54-plated 320isaloon with around 40,000 milesshowing on the clock.

Step up to the SE model (as mostpotential customers did) and you’ll belooking at £10,470 for a similarvintage car.

The auto box on this model isn’t thesmartest idea but still tacks £1,100onto that price.

The six-cylinder 325i is worth a lookand these open in SE trim at £11,700.Opt for a glitzy M Sport model and

you’ll need to find at least £12,885,still quite a sum. 325i Tourings open at£10,010.

The 330 is a popular pick and thesekick off at £13,205 for an SE saloon onthe 54 plate. The best all-rounder in

the line-up remains the 320d and thevalue-packed ES model starts at justunder £9,150.

WHAT TO LOOK FORNo major faults have been reported

with this generation 3 Series, BMWlearning their lessons from the old car’sproblems with sub-par South Africancars and lingering Nikasil cylinder lininggrumbles. Always go for metalliccolours.

Be suspicious of cars that have hadmany owners in a short time (thiscould be a sign of ongoing problems). If you really want peace of mind, buyfrom a BMW dealer - but be preparedto pay the premium.

OVERALLBMW obviously listened long and

hard to customer feedback whendesigning this generation 3 Series. With more rear legroom, more stan-dard equipment and better safety pro-vision while retaining its position as thedriver’s choice in the compact executivesector, it hit all the requisite nailssquarely on the head.

There’s no secret formula to the 3Series selling in huge numbers, justsolid commonsense. It makes a greatnew buy and a pretty decent used bettoo as long as you’re not expecting anyscreaming bargains.
