Tipping the scales atwell over 1,000kg and at around four metersin length, we’re talking about substantial bitsof metalwork but that raises questions aboutthe engines charged with powering them.

Can a supermini still get away with less than1.3-litres? Ford thinks so, fitting a 1.25-litreunit to its Fiesta.

This engine was fitted to the fourth genera-tion Fiesta and the fifth, where it was actuallyreplaced by an inferior 1.3-litre unit, then rein-troduced later on.

It’s back in this sixth generation Fiesta andnow there are a pair of power options. The59bhp entry-level option is predictably lackingin the performance department with the 0-60mph sprint taking a tiresome 16.9 seconds.The 81bhp alternative has more zip about itwith a 13.3s sprint but it’s still lacking a bit inthe muscle needed to propel a car of the

Fiesta’s size around town in a nippy fashion.Maximum torque is 84Nm at 4,200rpm,whereas the less powerful option produces its80Nm at a slightly more accessible 3,600rpm.

The wedge-effect of the Fiesta in profiledoesn’t bode well for the rear seat passengersin the three-door car but the Fiesta surpriseswith decent legroom and headroom that’smanageable even for a six-footer.

The windows are small and set high up, solight isn’t abundant in the back but the shop-ping bags, coats and road atlases that ownerswill store there most of the time won’t be over-ly worried. The five door models fare betterwith a bigger glass area creating a roomier feeland all derivatives share the same easily naviga-ble control system for their electronic functions.

It’s the price that’s going to persuade themajority of Fiesta 1.25 owners to take theplunge. It’s the cheapest way to get yourselfinto Ford’s iconic small car and for many, that

will be a recommendation in itself. You’ll payjust over £9,000 for the entry-level Studiomodel with the 59bhp engine and three doors.

Specification isn’t palatial but you get body-coloured bumpers, tinted glass, electric powersteering, a CD stereo and the Ford Easy FuelSystem that will prevent you from puttingdiesel in it during a moment of weakness. Stepup to Style trim and the options of five doorsand the more powerful engine are opened up.You pay £500 extra for the 81bhp unit. Thereare Style+ and Zetec trim levels for the 1.25-litre buyer to consider with the 81bhp engine.

The performance might not be stellar butrunning costs are agreeably low. Economy andemissions are 52.3mpg and 128g/km from the59bhp cars while the 81bhp models get49.5mpg and 133g/km.

THERE’S something slightlynaughty about a family load-luggerthat can leave a hot hatchbackstanding in a race away from thelights.

Even MINI is in on the act withits Cooper S Clubman but does theperformance estate formula stillwork with a car of this diminutivesize?

The Cooper S Clubman isn’tlacking the pace required to gainentry to the performance estateclub. Its 173bhp 1.6-litre tur-bocharged engine can get it to60mph in 7.6s and customers whoupgrade to the tuned John CooperWorks edition get 208bhpenabling a 6.8s sprint. That’s fastbut the best bit about theClubman is the way it retains theverve of the hatchbacked MINI.

At close to £17,000, the Cooper

S Clubman is fairly pricey for asupermini-based estate, even onewith sports car performance.

At least it leaves nobody in anydoubt as to its extra potency withits chrome handles, distinctive let-terbox-style bonnet scoop, sportsbumpers, twin chrome exhaust

and 16 in alloy wheels. Inside,there’s a three-spoke leathersteering wheel and sports seatsthat do a fine job of holding youin place.

It’s best to view the Cooper SClubman as a slightly more practi-cal hot hatchback rather than a

proper performance estate car. It’splenty quick enough but thereisn’t a lot of extra practicality overthe hatchback and the aggressivefeel of the car means it doesn’tlend itself all that well to familyoutings or weekend trips to theDIY centre. There may not be toomany customers yearning for aMINI Cooper S with a bigger bootand a rather quirky door configu-ration but there will be some andfor them, the Cooper S Clubmanis tailor-made.

IT was a long time coming but thewait was worth it.

While Volkswagen’s Golf was rulingthe roost, engineers at Vauxhall wereputting the finishing touches to a carequipped to wield a decisive horse-power advantage against Wolfsburg'sfinest. With no less than 240bhp ontap, Vauxhall’s Astra VXR remains oneof the hottest hatch tickets that it’scurrently possible to buy.

Yes, we’ve seen V6 hatches thattheoretically have more power butthey're heavier and, of course, muchmore expensive. What’s more, it's afair bet that none of them will beable to keep pace with the Astra VXRdown a typically bumpy British coun-try road. Think instead of the AstraVXR as a car more in the mould ofthe old Honda Civic Type-R albeit withanother 40bhp to call upon.

Performance really is searing, with60mph being dispatched in around sixseconds. Traction off the line is sur-prisingly good for a car with a power-ful and lightweight engine driving thefront wheels and only in damp condi-tions does the traction control systemget a good workout. Once on themove, there's less in the way oftorque steer than is present in, say, aFord Focus RS and despite the firmsuspension and optional 19-inchalloys that most will choose, the rideis reasonably malleable. It's certainly agood deal more compliant than aPeugeot 206 GTi 180 was.Comparisons such as these are neces-sary in order to provide a frame ofreference for a car that moves thegoalposts quite dramatically. This sort

of power from a hatch costingaround £20,000 requires some mentalreadjustment.

From the outside, the Astra VXR isdistinguished by 18-inch alloys (19-inch optional), a body-coloured V-

grille, ground- hugging side skirts, arear spoiler and revised bumperassemblies, along with neat detailtouches such as its Arden Blue frontand rear brake callipers and VXRbadges. Inside, there are Recaro seats,

revised instruments incorporating VXRlogos, a three-spoke sports steeringwheel, carbon-effect inserts on thedoors and facia and an alloy gear-knob, also with VXR detailing.Vauxhall has tweaked the Astra's cos-

metics a little, with sharper-lookingfront and rear lights, a revised frontbumper, more chrome splashed aboutthe grille and the choice of pianoblack or matt chrome interior finish-ing. Sport Hatch models like the VXRalso get a honeycomb front grille.

The raked roofline looks as if it'llhave taller rear seat passengers enter-ing the number of their chiropractorinto the speed-dial but Vauxhallclaims that rear seat space is well upto par for two adults. They just didn'tspecify what size.

Luggage room is slightly hamperedby that rakish roofline but given thecavernous amount of space in theback of the five-door Astra, it's hardto see carrying capacity being a rea-son to grumble.

Vauxhall’s Astra VXR continues tohave the powerplant, the looks andthe capability to remain a very big hitindeed in this sector and the staff atVauxhall have convinced us that theVXR badge is something to be takenseriously.

Although Ford’s Focus ST and theHonda Civic Type-R have a clear tar-get to aim at, something tells me thatVauxhall aren’t unduly worried.Moorland Motors price for Ex-Demonstrator £17,295.

The Compass might not be thelast word in sophistication but it’sa tough customer that’s also rea-sonably amiable on the road.
