Dei in St. Paul on a Sunday morning. On the other hand, I love using a variety of instruments to enhance worship. I dreamt about synthesizers last night! Piano is very useful for Black Gospel. Guitars and other percussion add to Hispanic and African music, etc. Let's use it all to add to the music of the spheres! My greatest joy would be for everyone to experience the feeling of abandon when you come into worship in song. Sing with your whole heart, and don’t feel like you are alone. Let the sound carry your voice along with your neighbor and with the heavenly hosts, praising God and saying, “Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory!” Pam Carlson [email protected]

today. It is hard to know which hymns and liturgy will be around in 20 or 100 years, but we do our best in selecting texts and music that we hope will have lasting power.

W hat is involved with singing? When we sing,

we inhale, filling our chest. Our diaphragm raises, and we set our vocal chords in motion so they vibrate in varying lengths according to the different pitches we want to produce! Similarly, a pipe organ can be described as a big box of whistles. Each pipe sits on top of a hollow wind chest that is filled with compressed air provided by a bellows or blower. (Smithsonian Magazine) One of the reasons the pipe organ has been the principal i ns t rumen t f o r l ead ing congregational song since 900 A.D. is because the organ produces sound closer to the human body than any other instrument. An 8-foot length of pipe shaped to become a

(Continued from page 1) “principal” matches the human voice when singing middle C. When an organ is designed for a w o r s h i p p i n g s p a c e , dimensions, angles, wood, brick and carpet surfaces all are taken into consideration. Once an organ is installed in the space, the pipes are again tweaked to give it the best sound quality. This cannot be done ahead of time in the shop. It happens with ears responding to the sound. Sometimes this takes months of listening to figure out. There are other instruments that use wind and tubing (pipes) that are lovely to sing with —trumpets, flutes, oboes, strings — but it would get quite expensive hiring an orchestra every Sunday to accompany hymns! The pipe organ has all of those sounds, plus the unique “principals” at the fingertips of one person. It is too hard to describe what an organ can do to encourage your voice. You really need to experience it l ive. Visit Augustana Lutheran in West St. Paul, Bethlehem Lutheran in south Minneapolis, or Gloria

7:00 p.m. Sit back and enjoy the smooth sounds of the Seven Half Trio. Interspersed throughout the evening will be various musicians from Mount Calvary performing a variety of music. The concert is a time for the Mount Calvary community to enjoy some music together and to raise funds for our future pipe organ through a freewill offering. The evening will be emceed by Sam Gerth with commentary by Debbie Nickell and Melissa Arbuckle. Family, friends, neighbors are all invited for an enjoyable evening!

Worship Young - Africa November 10 9:30 a.m.

Sunday school children attend this service with their families. Sunday school for the day is attending the Worship Young service in the Sanctuary! The most important part of raising a child in the faith is the family worshiping together. A family that worships together is the highest determinant of children attending church as adults. Worshiping together teaches children how to participate in worship, demonstrates that it is important to the whole family, and gives the family a shared experience of God.

Special Worship Young experiences are planned for the following dates: December 8, February 2, March 9

Birth to Age 3 Sunday School November 3 9:30 a.m.

A parent/child Sunday school class designed for children from birth – age 3. Expecting parents and grandparents are welcome, too! The class begins as a large group and then parents separate for a special talk time (in same room with kids, but another area) while kids are busy being entertained. Join this lively class at 9:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room on the following Sundays:

Afr i c a Sunday

Africa Sunday November 10

Join us in worship on November 10 for Africa Sunday. During all services there will be African music and presentations by the Global Social Team on African Ministries in Tanzania and Cameroon. In addition, during the 9:30 Worship Young service there will be hands on activities for the children. In the Fireside Room there will be displays of African artwork and items that Mount Calvary members have acquired during visits to Tanzania and Cameroon. Several Mount Calvary members who have traveled to Tanzania will be there to talk about their experiences and answer any questions you might have about the people, customs or about traveling to Tanzania. We will highlight the many different ways Mount Calvary grows in community and service with our companion congregation in Tanzania. Please join us in celebrating and learning more about how your mission dollars make a difference in the lives of others half a world away. November 10 is also the last day to contribute to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Thank you for your gifts to purchase mosquito nets to help prevent malaria. So far we have received enough donations to purchase over 250 nets. Check the display in the Narthex to either buy a colored mosquito for $1 or write a check to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. You can also give online at http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Responding-to-the-World/ELCA-Malaria-Campaign.aspx More details are by the display . Global Social Ministries Committee

Calvary's Cameras

Thursday, November 14

7:00 p.m. Did you know that Mount Calvary has a photography group? We meet monthly at church and are totally non-competitive, we just like to encourage and inspire each other to use our cameras and improve our picture taking abilities. We bring our photos in digitally on a flash drive and share them with each other. We will be meeting next on: Our themes are: Uncomfortable situations. This can mean uncomfortable for you, the photographer, uncomfortable

for your subject(s), uncomfortable for your viewing audience, etc. Product placement. Have fun exploring ways to put "products" in a photo (a can of coke, a vehicle symbol, a clothing brand, etc) either obviously or subtly.

As always, bring in any photos you'd like to share! or just come to observe. Any questions or want to hear more about this group, contact Wendy Lane at [email protected] or 651-454-2344 (ext 14).

THRIVENT MEMBERS

Help Support Mount Calvary through their THRIVENT CHOICE program. Thrivent Choice is a charitable grant program that allows eligible members to recommend where Thrivent Financial will distribute a portion of its charitable grant funds (Choice Dollars). Mount Calvary has been a recipient of these dollars for the past 3 years and has received over $8000 because our members have directed their Choice Dollars to Mount Calvary. If you direct your Choice Dollars to Mount Calvary between October 1 and November 30, 2013, Thrivent Choice will DOUBLE those choice dollars (up to $15 million for churches across the country). To direct your dollars to Mount Calvary, go to Thrivent.com/thriventchoice, or call 1-800-Thrivent (1-800-847-4836) and say, “Thrivent Choice.”

Thrivent Choice Event Sunday, November 10

Join us for this informational event. We’ll discuss: What is Thrivent Choice? Who is eligible to participate and how? How Choice Dollars grant funds can benefit

organizations that matter most to you. A complimentary dinner will be served following the event thanks to the event sponsorship by the Northern Dakota County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. To reserve your spot, contact Audrey Gilman at 651-738-1767 or [email protected] by November 6.

Benefitting our local community via: Eagan Resource Center and Lincoln Place. “The Holiday Shoppe” is a program started by an individual from our community which benefits the Eagan Resource Center clients. Items collected range from household items to personal items. This is a once a year program where clients can pick out an item for themselves and family members to help celebrate the holidays.

The Lincoln Place, located just down the street on the corner on Cedar Grove Parkway and Gold Trail, offers a permanent supportive housing program for young adults ages 18 to 24 that are homeless and/or disabled, and is designed to increase self-sufficiency and decrease the risk of future homelessness. Items collected for these young adults range from personal items to household items. The Giving Tree will work the same as in previous years. On it, you will find tags that you can choose from with specific items listed. Choose the tags, shop for those items, and return your UNWRAPPED items, with the tags attached, to the box by the tree. The Giving Tree will be ready on Sunday, November 10th and will be available throughout November. Please return your unwrapped gifts to church by December 3rd. Questions? W: Are there any groups or activities you’re involved with outside of church?

K: I enjoy volunteering in the community. I am on the board of the Eagan Lakeville Resource Center, the Eagan Funfest Ambassadors, the Lincoln Place Advisory Board, the Northern Dakota County Chapter of Thrivent Financial, and the Eagan Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Campaign.

W: What are some of your favorite things about Mount Calvary?

K: My church family has been an amazing support system for me by holding me up in prayer and thoughts and actions.

W: What are some ways you have been involved at church?

K: I have served on the Board of Worship, Reach Out Committee, Global Social, Altar Services, Wedding Coordinator and Thursday Night Community Meals.

W: What's your favorite part of worship?

K: I look forward to hearing the gospel and the Pastors message each week. I try to re-read the gospel the beginning of the week and reflect on the words and message.

W: Who influenced you in your faith the most?

K: My father. He was deaf and he didn’t let his handicap define him. He trusted in the Lord always.

W: Which service time do you generally attend?

K: I generally attend the 9:30 service.

This month we will get to know a little bit more about Mount Calvary member...Karen Dare W: (Wendy) What is your favorite

thing to do in the summer? winter?

K: (Karen): In the summer I like to go on long walks, garden and go to local festivals. In the winter I hibernate and read books.

W: If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

K: There are so many places I haven’t been in the United States yet. New York, Washington D.C., Chicago to name a few. I get very antsy on a 4 hour plane trip so hard to think about a “world” destination.

W: Are you a "morning person", a "night person", or a little of each?

K: I guess I am a little of each. I am one of those people who are very cheerful in the morning.

W: What are your favorite hobbies? or things to do in your free time?

K: I love to cook and try new recipes. I enjoy volunteering in the community. I am in 2 book clubs. I enjoy floral arranging and I just started doing some scrapbooking.

W: Use only three words and describe yourself.

K: Upbeat, Creative, Passionate

W: What is your favorite TV show? (or name a few, if that's easier)

K: Blue Bloods, Downton Abbey, Army Wives, Dancing with the Stars (and no I don’t dance)

W Where were you born? K: Minneapolis, Minnesota

W: What are two or three of your favorite foods?

K: Any kind of squash, beef stew and chocolate. Chocolate is a food, right? (Wendy adds a resounding “Yes, it is!!”)

W: Do you have any pets? K: Mickey, a yellow lab.

W: What are your favorite type(s) of music?

K: I really enjoy all styles of music. On my car radio right now I have the country rock and Christian stations programmed in. I am a Big fan of Switchfoot right now.

W: What is something most people don’t know about you?

K: I went to Junior High with the singer/artist knows as Prince. I tutored him in math and he walked me home from school and protected me from bullies.

W: What are you looking forward to in this next year?

K: I was able to do a little traveling this year and hope to do more next year.
