Boys who come to Mount

Saint Michael Academy

grow, develop and excel in

every way: academically,

intellectually, physically

and spiritually. That’s because fellowship and

the lifelong bonds established among classmates,

teachers, administrators, coaches and staff sets

us apart. Here, students are not only inspired to

achieve more, but also feel the constant support

of the Mount community. Whether the challenge

is solving advanced problems in Calculus, facing

an undefeated opponent on the playing field

or planning for the future in an increasingly

complex world, our students say they’re

smarter, stronger, more compassionate and more

engaged with their faith because of The Mount

experience.

They grew from Brotherhood and so can you.

Mount Saint Michael Academy has a long and rich tradition of forming

the minds, bodies and spirits of young men who go on to excel in their

studies and in life. Our rigorous, college preparatory curriculum, rooted

in Catholic ideals of service and leadership, has paved the way to college and greater

opportunities for thousands of Mount alumni.

Relationships are at the heart of the educational experience. We are deeply

committed to teaching in the Marist tradition of individual care and attention. At the

Mount, you are also a part of a diverse community of learners and so you will be

challenged to think critically, problem-solve and develop your unique gifts and talents.

Students often say that learning within this closely-knit community “opened their eyes” to

new people, new experiences and new ways of looking at the world.

The Champagnat Scholars Program offers a unique opportunity for top-tier

students to grow intellectually and build leadership skills through summer projects,

training and service opportunities and cultural exchanges. In addition to scholarship

support, Champagnat Scholars can graduate with more than 15 college credits — the

equivalent of a full semester of college. Honors and a significant number of AP courses are

taught in English, History, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and more. For a complete

listing of required courses and electives, see the Course Listing in the back pocket of this

brochure packet.

Mount Faculty As a student at the Mount, you will benefit from small class sizes and

direct contact with highly qualified faculty. Our teachers go the extra mile to support your

intellectual growth whether you are an honors student or need a little extra help. Mount

faculty members are also passionate about the subjects they teach. From freshman biology

to senior electives such as the “History of New York City,” our teachers have mastered

many specialized areas and share this knowledge in accessible and inspiring ways.

Students of all faiths benefit from a robust spiritual life at Mount Saint Michael

Academy. Students are invited to grow their relationship with God through

prayer, personal reflection, study and action. All Mount students take part

in regular prayer and worship, as well as classroom study in religion. Many choose to

strengthen the bonds of Brotherhood by joining the Marist Youth Group to deepen their

own spirituality. Others attend a guided retreat on campus or at the Marist Brothers’ retreat

house in Esopus, N.Y. to draw closer to God and fellow students.

But faith doesn’t stop there. The founder of the Marist Brothers, St. Marcellin

Champagnat, put his faith into action by reaching out to others to make Jesus known and

loved. Today, we foster St. Marcellin’s giving spirit by encouraging Mount Saint Michael

Academy students to give to others through a number of unique service opportunities,

from organizing food and fund drives to devoting time to worthwhile causes including

Habitat for Humanity and Midnight Run, which provides aid to the homeless.

Additionally, every student is required to volunteer 100 hours over their four

years at the Mount at an approved agency. The Office of Campus Ministry assists students

in finding a suitable place in which they may best use their gifts and talents to provide

Christian service.

a Marist FaMily At Mount, it’s easy to belong to something larger than yourself when

you participate in programs at the Marist Brothers Retreat House, a beautiful 200-acre estate

located 90 miles away in upstate Esopus, N.Y. Juniors may participate in an overnight retreat,

where they gain new insights into themselves, their classmates and teachers. Seniors are

encouraged to attend the Marist Brothers Encounter Program, which takes place over the

course of an extended weekend. Here you will meet and form lasting connections with students

from Marist Schools in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Florida, Texas and Illinois.

Mount Saint Michael Academy

is one of three schools in

the New York metropolitan

area that educates students

in the tradition of excellence

so characteristic of the Marist

Brothers. In addition, we are

part of a national and global

network of schools founded

by a congregation of Catholic

teaching brothers. The Marist

diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods of our students and their families. Among these

many organizations, which promote both culture and language, are the Italian Club, Afro-

Caribbean Club, Irish-American Club and Fuerza Latina.

experienced teachers and advisors will help you to establish a new club. And

Since its founding in 1926, Mount Saint Michael Academy has earned a long

and proud tradition of athletic excellence. Today, the Mount is a recognized

New York powerhouse in a variety of sports including football and basketball,

bringing home many state and city championships. But even more important, our student-

athletes also excel in the classroom. In fact, many are selected for Scholar All-State teams and

receive academic scholarships to attend college.

Our 22-acre campus and ample facilities including a football stadium, outdoor track,

two baseball fields, indoor batting cage and fully-equipped gymnasium support student-

athletes as they strive for excellence.

Winning records are fantastic, but most Mount athletes say the intangible benefits

gained on the field and court carry them through life: the time-management skills acquired by

balancing schoolwork and athletics, the lifelong bonds formed with teammates and coaches,

and learning to lead through action and deeds.

Great traditions! Sixty-eight years and counting, the Thanksgiving Day game is one

of the most cherished of Mount traditions. Each year our varsity football team plays Cardinal

Hayes on Thanksgiving morning. Mount students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni show off

their pride and cheer on the Mountaineers in this longstanding, but friendly rivalry for cross-

Bronx bragging rights.

Admissions All graduating eighth grade students must take

the TACHS (Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools)

Exam, which is administered in November. Prospective

students who do not sit for the exam must contact the

Director of Admissions, (718) 515-6400, ext. 228 to request

an interview.

Financial Support More than 25 percent of Mount

students receive tuition assistance. This is made available

through Mount Saint Michael Academy’s participation in

the Archdiocesan Be a Student’s Friend (BASF) Program.

The Mount is also a Student Sponsor Partnership (SSP)

member school. Other forms of support include the school’s

endowment, the Inner City Scholarship Fund and annual

giving. Students must be enrolled in order to apply for

financial assistance.

Scholarships Academic scholarships are awarded to

students based on the entrance exam, elementary school

recommendation and grade school record. Champagnat

Scholars are eligible for awards ranging from $1,500 to full

tuition. Alumni Association scholarships of $1,000 are also

awarded each year. Approximately 20 percent of Mount

students receive academic awards.

Take the Next Step

Mount Saint Michael Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletics and other administered programs.
