Dr. Scott Dorsey, associate professor of music and director of choral

activities at Mount Union College, recently enjoyed a ride to France

aboard the Air France Concorde – his prize for having the winning paint

scheme design for the Socata Trinidad GT. Dorsey, a licensed pilot, en-

tered the Eads Socata “Paint the Trinidad GT” contest with a design he

developed over the College’s spring break in 2000. He and his wife, Dawn,

enjoyed the trip immensely. Dorsey reproposed to his wife on the flight

to France, and they renewed their vows on a bridge overlooking the Seine River. In addition to visiting the Louvre, the

Eiffel Tower and many other sites, they toured the Socata aircraft factory.

When Carl Krabill ’52 graduated from Mount Union,

there was no art major at the College. Krabill, a busi-

ness major, says he can remember drawing on his

notepaper in class. Eventually, he was able to better uti-

lize his talents, earning a master’s degree in painting

from Kent State University. After retiring as a teacher,

Krabill began painting full-time. His paintings are seen

in various prominent locations, including the surgery center of the Cleveland Clinic. Students and visitors to Mount

Union can enjoy his artwork thanks to Harold and Laurie Kolenbrander. The former College president and his wife

purchased the painting, a landscape, which now hangs in the Main Lounge of the Hoover-Price Campus Center.

After over 16 years in fund raising, Debbie Sartain-Paul ’82 was able to

accept her dream job – managing special events for the Multiple Sclero-

sis Society in Cleveland, OH. The MS Society is a cause that she de-

scribes as very near and dear to her heart. Sartain-Paul was diagnosed

with MS herself. Each year in April, she organizes the MS Walk in North-

east Ohio. The walk is held in April in five locations including Cleve-

land, Akron, Mentor, and Canal Fulton and involves over 5,300 participants. This year the walk raised over $900,000

for the MS Society. Sartain-Paul is also responsible for organizing MS Walks in Columbus and Youngstown. She is

Mount Union College offers a liberalarts education grounded in the Judeo-

Christian tradition. The Collegeaffirms the importance of reason,

open inquiry, living faith, andindividual worth. Mount Union’smission is to prepare students for

meaningful work, fulfilling lives andresponsible citizenship.

Champions of the Liberal Arts.................................. 26

While students at Mount Union, Bette (Bodley ’67) Chambless, Clarence Miller

’52, Charlene (Gregg ’62) Bolton and Virginia Rhodes ’83 enjoyed singing and

music as members of the choir, but explored other academic opportunities of

the College’s liberal arts curriculum. Returning to campus for Alumni Week-

end 2002, they sang at the College once again as members of the Alumni Choir

and shared how their liberal arts experiences have led them down different ca-

reer paths.

The Secret of Alumni Success .................................. 28

Margaret (Loughead ’52) Meyers and Constance (Oesch ’25) Meacham have

each achieved great success since graduating from Mount Union, but each in a

different way. Meyers has traveled throughout the world, displaying courage

and facing danger as she helped those in need in countries including Libya and

Cambodia. Meacham built success in her own back yard, sharing her love of

Mount Union with three daughters with whom she has celebrated 50-year re-

unions.

Those returning to campus for Alumni Weekend 2002

were invited to attend a Welcome Back Reception at Road-

house Charly’s and given the opportunity to connect with

old friends, mingle with other alumni and reminisce

about their days at Mount Union.

President’s Message

2

We had a wonderful opportunity to welcome back some

champions to Mount Union College during Alumni Week-

end this past June. While the word “champion” conjures up

visions of football helmets, scoreboards and trophies, what I

am referring to are different kinds of champions. This is to

take nothing away from our Purple Raiders football team who

have captured six national championships and have repre-

sented the College so well on the field and in the classroom.

But as generations of alumni made their way to the campus

this summer, the number of other champions we have

throughout the country and the world struck me.

You may have seen advertising recently from our Office of

Public Affairs and Marketing that points out that Mount

Union College is “A College for Champions. ” The ad cam-

paign depicts our professors and students as champions of

the fields which they represent. Likewise, our alumni are

champions in their own right.

In the pages that follow you will be reading about some of

our alumni champions. From our Alumni Service Award

winners Joan (Davis ’60) Guylas and Bill ’52 and Carolyn

(Cowie ’55) Krochta to the more than 50 members of the

Alumni Choir who returned, plus all of those who returned

for their reunions, there are many champions among us.

One attendee who stood out among the crowd was Constance

(Oesch ’25) Meacham who was attending her 77th consecu-

tive Alumni Weekend. Constance and more than 20 relatives

represent three generations of Mount Union College students.

Imagine her pride as she celebrated with her youngest daugh-

ter Marian (Meacham ’52) Shern at the latter’s 50th class re-

union. Constance has been present at all three daughters’

Mount Union 50th class reunions. Remarkable.

Each year during Alumni Weekend, Cynthia and I are privy

to a number of fascinating stories that alumni share about

themselves during their student years and now as graduates.

Clearly Mount Union College has played a major role in shap-

ing their lives. Intertwined among the words of reminiscence

and storytelling, a common theme emerges: the Mount Union

College experience has prepared our graduates to make a dif-

ference in the world. Regardless of the major, what becomes

apparent as the stories unravel is that the lessons learned at

Mount Union were largely about dealing with life’s issues,

and in most cases, someone at the College had a major influ-

ence in shaping the future of the graduate.

We hope that never changes. I suspect that Constance

Meacham’s parents who attended Mount Union in 1901

would have similar stories to tell as the graduates of 2001.

And while Mount Union may not be the same place as it was

100 years ago (nor would we want it to be), the thread that

remains is that our people are champions in the game of life.

Bette (Bodley ’67) Chambless has uti-

lized the skills she obtained at Mount

Union College as a vocal performance

major to start her own business and

then made an unconventional turn, us-

ing her skills to reach out to those af-

flicted with HIV/AIDS.

“My work in HIV/AIDS ministry is

very strong in my heart,” said

Chambless. “It has allowed my music

performance interests to take a won-

derful detour into HIV advocacy.”

After owning and operating a music

studio in Atlanta, GA for 35 years,

Chambless became involved with HIV/

AIDS work through the Presbyterian

Church. She organizes and performs

music for HIV/AIDS agen-

cies, combining her skills

in music and counseling. In

addition to having a bachelor’s

degree in vocal performance

from Mount Union, Chambless

has master’s degrees in

church music and commu-

nity counseling.

Music has always had a

spiritual component for

Chambless, even while she

was a student at Mount Union

and a member of the choir.

She particularly remembers

Prof. Cecil Stewart, director of

the choir, who she says had a

deep and profound faith. “He repre-

sented the College’s philosophy so well,”

she recalls.

In regard to the Alumni Weekend fes-

tivities, Chambless said, “It was great

seeing friends I had not seen in two or

three decades. I have to mention life-

long friendships when I talk about

Mount Union. I hear that so much with

other alumni, as well.”

She relates that her work with the HIV/

AIDS ministry is part of the music

therapy movement, which uses music to

minister to those in need.

“My time at Mount Union was so im-

portant because I learned about people,”

said Chambless. “That has been crucial

in the type of outreach I have become

involved with, as an advocate for those

with HIV/AIDS. Mount Union planted

the seeds, so to speak, not just for mu-

sic, but for my life!”

Clarence Miller ’52 says that having

been a college professor himself, he

knows that “there is education outside

of the classroom that is just as impor-

tant as what goes on in the classroom.”

Miller, a voice major and president of the

concert choir at Mount Union, went on

to become the head of the voice and cho-

ral department at Glassboro State, now

known as Rowan University. He holds

the title of professor emeritus at Rowan,

where he spent 36 years.

“What I learned in the class-

room, being involved with my

fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega,

and in intramural sports –

Mount Union provided me

with a wealth of material,” said

Miller. “There was a family

spirit there.”

He fondly remembers the choir

tours and feels “privileged” to

have studied with Prof. Cecil

Stewart. Another favorite

memory is winning the “Illu-

mination Night” contest (now

known as Greek Sing) with his

fraternity brothers when he

was song leader.

The Mount Union Choir has a tradition of providing a choral outlet for musicmajors, as well as students studying in other fields, such as (clockwise fromtop left) Bette (Bodley ’67) Chambless, Clarence Miller ’52, Virginia Rhodes’83 and Charlene (Gregg ’62) Bolton.

“We were all athletes and were

in shock that we won a sing-

ing contest,” he said, laughing.

“We were so excited. It was like

winning the Stagg Bowl to us!”

He returned for Alumni Week-

end this year and for the second

time, directed the Alumni Choir.

“I realized, while rehearsing

with the Alumni Choir, what

a cross-section of all disci-

plines we represented,” said Miller. “But

most of all, I experienced that feeling

of family, even though 50 years had

passed.”

Charlene (Gregg ’62) Bolton says that

music “has always been a part of my

life.” Even though she earned her de-

gree at Mount Union in psychology,

Bolton planned to be involved with

music during her college career and

throughout her life. She has many good

memories of the Mount Union choir.

“The choir was just crucial for all of us

that were involved,” said Bolton. “It was

magical. It is something that is hard to

explain, but we all felt it!”

She recalls singing at the World National

Methodist Conference in Oslo, Norway,

an experience she calls “extraordinary.”

“So many of those memories are so

vivid. I remember how people opened

up their homes to us when we traveled

and the friendships that were made,”

said Bolton.

Bolton went on to earn her master’s

degree in education and teach school.

Rhodes. “I thought I was kind

of a ‘wanna-be,’ not a real tal-

ent. But, I did try out and was

accepted in the choir.”

Rhodes expressed how grateful

she was that at Mount Union

there was an opportunity for

non-music majors, such as her-

self, to participate.

One experience that she recalls

vividly from her college years is

singing for a Founder’s Day celebration

in Presser Recital Hall.

“We stood around the outside of the

seating in Presser and sang all these old

Mount Union songs. It sounded amaz-

ing and was so much fun,” said Rhodes.

Rhodes went on to medical school at The

Ohio State University and is currently

in practice as a hematologist/oncologist

in Erie, PA. She said that her job keeps

her too busy to sing regularly, so she was

thrilled to be able to sing with the

Alumni Choir during Alumni Weekend.

“This is my one opportunity to sing,

and a wonderful chance to reconnect

with a group of people who are so tal-

ented,” said Rhodes.

Rhodes said that she enjoyed getting back

to campus and seeing all the changes, such

as the new buildings.

“Even though some of the buildings may

look new and different, the feeling of fam-

ily is still the same,” said Rhodes. “I think

Mount Union helped prepare me for ev-

erything I have done – from developing

my work ethic and inquiring mind to

learning about interaction with people.”

27

More than 50 alumni returned to campus during Alumni Weekend 2002 toperform as members of the Alumni Choir.

She joined the Peace Corps and volun-

teered in Peru, and for the past 16 years

has been a realtor. But music has still

occupied a vital part of her life.

Bolton enjoyed coming back for

Alumni Weekend. She recalls living in

what was once the Student Union,

which is now van den Eynden Hall,

housing faculty and staff offices. She

says that the women who lived in that

building had a very special bond.

“I feel very blessed that I went to Mount

Union for so many reasons – the friend-

ships I made, what I learned, the music

involvement,” said Bolton. “I think what

Mount Union gave us was more than

an education. I had phenomenal teach-

ers who tried to teach us how to think.

And they were very successful in doing

that.”

Dr. Virginia Rhodes ’83 never dreamed

she could sing in the choir at Mount

Union. She was a chemistry major, and

thought that the musical groups would

be limited to music majors.

“I had a lot of friends in the choir, and

they encouraged me to try out,” said

When Margaret (Loughead ’52) Meyers graduated

from Mount Union College, she was ready to em-

bark upon her life. She says now that her years on Mount

Union’s campus gave her “self confidence, courage and pride,”

and she would need all of those things in the adventurous

travels that took her around the world throughout the next

50 years.

One of Meyers’ first stops in her journeys was North Africa

in the late 1960s. Her husband, a member of the Air Force,

was stationed in Tripoli, Libya. She had many experiences in

Africa, and most notably, she recalls when they were evacu-

ated to Spain in 1967 during the six-day war. Meyers also put

her nursing skills to work in Spain, voluntarily nursing those

within the camp who had fallen ill with various afflictions

such as mumps and measles.

Once they were relocated to North Africa, Meyers was of-

fered the position of health teacher on the base, a position

that came with one additional responsibility – coaching the

football team. Undaunted, Meyers said she took a book out

of the library about football to help her with her new re-

sponsibility. While in Africa, Meyers learned to speak Arabic,

AlumThe Secret of

she taught nursing skills to those on base and also taught

English. Her most memorable student was none other than

Muammar Qadhafi.

In the late 1970s, Meyers had the opportunity to go to Cam-

bodia as a nurse. She immediately volunteered, even though

it meant leaving her family behind for several months and

facing dangerous conditions.

“If you have ever seen the movie The Killing Fields, you would

understand why I left my family for a few months to go to

Cambodia and help,” says Meyers.

In Cambodia, Meyers lived in a tent and faced dangers such

as bombings and cobras. When she arrived in Cambodia, they

were taken to a cobra farm to watch them milking the co-

bras. “They wanted us to not be afraid of the snakes,” said

Meyers. “But they did not warn us about the bombings!”

While in Cambodia, Meyers was with a group of four nurses

and a doctor. They treated everyone who came to the camp

because they “did not even know who the enemy was.” She

delivered babies and treated all kinds of injuries and illnesses.

During these travels, and while raising four children, Meyers

managed to go back to school and get her master’s degree.

She had a professor who allowed her to bring her youngest

child to class, and Meyers says she feels that she was “very

fortunate” to be able to get her master’s degree during a time

(1970) when that was not so common.

Meyers says that her memories of her college years on Mount

Union’s campus were wonderful and that she was very blessed.

“I started college only five days after I graduated from high

school. Luckily, I was very outgoing! Coming from a big city,

I had never lived in a small town before, and I had a good

experience in Alliance,” said Meyers. “I am eternally grateful

I was able to attend Mount Union!”

Constance (Oesch ’25) Meacham attended this year’s

Alumni Weekend just as she has done every Alumni

Weekend since she earned her degree from Mount Union

College. This year marked her 77th Alumni Weekend, mak-

ing her the oldest graduate in attendance this year.

Meacham, a resident of Randolph, OH, attended the College

when there were only five buildings and one female residence

hall. Memorial Hall, razed in 1996, was being built and the

only sports women could participate in were intramurals.

Women typically dropped out of college after they were mar-

ried. Meacham said that contrary to many other females who

attended college at the time, “I wasn’t looking for a husband.”

Meacham’s parents both attended the College (Luella Battles

1901 and Clark Oesch 1901), and that became a deciding fac-

tor in her decision to attend. “There was never any doubt

where I was going,” she said. Over 20 of her relatives have

attended the College, covering three generations, and she

passed on the legacy to three of her four children, Margaret

(Meacham ’49) Mihalyi , Eleanor (Meacham ’50) Broscoe and

Marian (Meacham ’52) Shern. Meacham has had the plea-

sure of attending all three daughters’ 50th class reunions.

As a student, Meacham was a member of Alpha Chi Omega

sorority and played intramural basketball. She says that she

developed “a greater interest for religious knowledge, that I

would not have found otherwise.” After she graduated, she

became a Latin teacher in Norwalk, OH, and two years later,

she married a high school friend.

Shern, Meacham’s daughter, said that she thoroughly enjoyed

this year’s Alumni Weekend. She said that it was a special

event, not only for her, but for her mother, who was able to

see her youngest daughter celebrate a 50th reunion.

Shern says that her mother was certainly an influence in her

decision to attend Mount Union. “Of course I remember her

talking about Mount Union,” said Shern. “She is Mount

Union’s biggest ‘backer’!”

Shern fondly remembers get-togethers with her mother’s

Mount Union friends, who had a ‘round robin’ group. “They

got together every year, and so we got to know them all very

well, including their children,” said Shern.

When Shern entered Mount Union her freshman year, her

sister, Margaret, was a senior and sister Eleanor, was a junior.

She remembers that each girl had $65 allotted to buy school

clothes for the year, and that they laid them all in the back

of their father’s new red Ford pick-up truck for the trip to

Alliance.

Shern said that some of the highlights of the 50th reunion

were singing with the Alumni Choir and reuniting with her

college roommate of three years. “I did not know she was

coming to the reunion, and she surprised me,” said Shern. “It

was a really good surprise!”

ALUMNI UPDATE

Tribe Time

More than 250 alumni and friends gathered for Mount Union

College Night with the Cleveland Indians on July 12. The

evening was especially enjoyable as the Tribe won in the bot-

tom of the 10th inning with a “walk off” base hit.

An Evening with the Bard

On July 14, about 60 alumni and friends gathered at Stan

Hywet Hall and Gardens for a box supper and the outdoor

performance of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Cast

members included Jason Marr ’97, Brian Wilfong ’00 and Dr.

Douglas Hendel, professor of theatre at the College. It was a

wonderful evening and hopefully will be repeated in the sum-

mer of 2003.

Rides and More Rides

Our annual day at Cedar Point was July 20 and alumni, friends,

current and incoming students enjoyed a day of rides and

special fun.

Chautauqua on Lake Erie

Our traditional Lakeside Luncheon was held July 31 with Curt

Linke ’58 and Barbara (Branfield ’58) Caner in charge of the

arrangements. . . and purple and white balloons. Michael

De Matteis, director of sports information, spoke on the topic

The Eye of the Storm: Handling the Media Blitz during Mount

Union’s Football Championship Seasons. A family violin trio,

all under 13 years of age, provided beautiful pre-luncheon

music for the group.

Milestones

In the autumn of 1932, the first a capella choir was organized as a part of the

activities at Mount Union. Performing musical presentations on campus and

also in the general Ohio and Eastern Pennsylvania areas, the choir soon be-

came a permanent addition to the Mount Union community. In 1949, Prof.

Cecil Stewart became the conductor of the choir and soon changed the name

to the Mount Union Choir.

It wasn’t long until the choir began to flourish. Beginning in 1949, the choir

toured annually, appearing in major cities of the East and Middle West, per-

forming in the New England States, middle Atlantic States, Washington, D.C.,

and many others. The choir also performed radio and television services for

the National Vesper and the National Radio Pulpit. In 1961, a 30-day concert

tour took the choir to seven European countries. During the summer of 1966,

thirty-seven concerts were given in 14 countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Hong

Kong, Malaysia, India, the Middle East countries, Turkey and Greece during

the choir’s 48-day global tour.

Today, the Mount Union Choir is under the direction of Dr. Scott Dorsey. With

five choirs and approximately 200 students involved in the choral program there

is continual growth. The choir is preparing to release their third CD in the fall,

which will include current and remastered releases. The Mount Union choir

will also continue their annual touring trips. This year they will visit Washing-

ton, D.C. and Pittsburgh, PA.
