Quarterly Newsletter of Stowe Land Trust Fall 2010 Mountain Views T he Adams Camp bridge project started out as a bit of a gamble. What is a land protection organiza- tion doing building a bridge anyway? Well, a big part of Stowe Land Trust’s work is what happens after land is protected, and in this case, the 500-acre Adams Camp land was conserved in 2006 specifically for public recreation. Building a bridge, whether it’s a couple of puncheon boards over a muddy section at Wiessner Woods, or a 65-foot steel-beamed span across a river is all part of what it means to take our stewardship responsibilities seriously, and make good on the promise of land protection for fu- ture generations. Thanks to the 180+ donors listed on page three, Stowe Land Trust now has the funds in place to begin construction of the bridge this fall. The incredible support came from people from all walks of life – those who want to access the land for nature walks, those who are eagerly anticipating the new network of mountain bike trails, and those who remain hopeful that the bridge will open the door for a groomed network of ski trails once again. The campaign started quietly. But as word spread, the flood gates opened. At a critical point, SLT received a call from an anonymous donor offering a challenge grant of $10,000. The response was immediate and over- whelming. First, the Stowe Nordic Outing Club (SNOC) committed $2,500 and others quickly followed. The Stowe Conservation Commission and a handful of generous do- nors helped “bridge the gap” to reach the goal of raising $68,000. This dollar amount will cover all costs associated with the proj- ect, including building the bridge, moving the beams to the site, and project oversight. Construction on the bridge is set to begin soon and be completed by December 17th. In the meantime, the Stowe Mountain Bike Club and the Town of Stowe are continuing their work to construct more than 3 miles of new trail on the Adams Camp proper- ty. Most weekends one can find a cadre of volunteers working side by side with paid professionals, busily constructing the new sustainable trail network. The atmosphere is welcoming and the work is satisfying. The partnership between Trapp Family Lodge, SLT, SMBC, SNOC, the Town, and all of our members and supporters is making great things happen in the outdoors. Thank you all for your generous support. We look for- ward to sharing news of the ongoing project with you! Youth Corps crews spent two weeks this summer working on the trail at Adams Camp. The Adams Camp bridge project started out as a bit of a gamble. What is a land protection organiza-

tion doing building a bridge anyway? Well, a big part of Stowe Land Trust’s work is what happens after land is protected, and in this case, the 500-acre Adams Camp land was conserved in 2006 specifically for public recreation. Building a bridge, whether it’s a couple of puncheon boards over a muddy section at Wiessner Woods, or a 65-foot steel-beamed span across a river is all part of what it means to take our stewardship responsibilities seriously, and make good on the promise of land protection for fu-ture generations.

Thanks to the 180+ donors listed on page three, Stowe Land Trust now has the funds in place to begin construction of the bridge this fall. The incredible support came from people from all walks of life – those who want to access the land for nature walks, those who are eagerly anticipating the new network of mountain bike trails, and those who remain hopeful that the bridge will

open the door for a groomed network of ski trails once again.

The campaign started quietly. But as word spread, the flood gates opened. At a critical point, SLT received a call from an anonymous donor offering a challenge grant of $10,000. The response was immediate and over-whelming. First, the Stowe Nordic Outing Club (SNOC) committed $2,500 and others quickly followed. The Stowe Conservation

Commission and a handful of generous do-nors helped “bridge the gap” to reach the goal of raising $68,000. This dollar amount will cover all costs associated with the proj-ect, including building the bridge, moving the beams to the site, and project oversight. Construction on the bridge is set to begin soon and be completed by December 17th.

In the meantime, the Stowe Mountain Bike Club and the Town of Stowe are continuing their work to construct more than 3 miles of new trail on the Adams Camp proper-ty. Most weekends one can find a cadre of volunteers working side by side with paid professionals, busily constructing the new sustainable trail network. The atmosphere is welcoming and the work is satisfying. While we are born with curiosity and wonder and our early years are full of the

adventure they bring, I know such inherent joys are often lost.

I also know that, being deep within us, their latent glow can be fanned to flame again by

awareness and an open mind.- Sigurd F. Olson

This newsletter is dedicated to everyone who has supported our work this year. SLT is fortunate to have all of you who

carry the torch of land conservation and give something back to make Stowe an incredible place to live, work and visit.

We have been overwhelmed with the terrific response we received in support of the Adams Camp bridge project. A sincere thank you to all the individuals, businesses and foundations who are making this project possible! It’s been exciting and gratifying to reach our fundraising goal and look forward to beginning construc-tion this fall.

This summer we made a special effort to fo-cus on the wonderful trail resources we have in Stowe, and specifically those properties that are owned or under easement with Stowe Land Trust: trail work on Adams Camp, new trails at Kirchner Woods and a facelift for the well-loved trails at Wiessner Woods.

The Stowe Trail Race Series was yet another way we were able to bring attention to the recreational opportunities available to us. The Ranch Camp Ramble at Stowe Mountain Re-sort, the Town Loops Stampede held at Golden

Eagle and the Trapp Cabin 10k at Trapp Family Lodge all afforded a fun, inviting atmosphere for experienced trail runners as well as those new to the sport. See the results on page 5 and thanks again to our sponsors and participants!

There are so many ways individuals choose to support land conservation, but some gifts go beyond annual membership dues. Perhaps one of the most profound is the decision to perma-nently conserve land. This summer, the Stowe community lost 3 individuals who played a vital role in helping to create a legacy for current and future generations (page 11). We owe them our thanks and gratitude for helping to make Stowe a better place.

As the air turns chilly and the trees begin to shed their leaves, we’ve taken stock of all that our members have done for us this year. And we thank you!

Tournament day began with a questionable forecast, but once again, Mother Nature (or was it the gin bottle in the crook of the tree) graced us with good weather for the 11th Annual Invitational Golf Tournament.

This was an exceptional year for the Golf Tournament with record-setting scores on this challenging course and a record-breaking $27,000 raised to support Stowe Land Trust’s work to conserve the places we love.

With the help of over fifty local businesses and individuals who provided everything from gift certificates and golf balls to 5 - star dinners and hand blown sculptures, we had a great time. The support of this event is a testa-ment to the importance our community places on farm land, forests and access to trails.

Many thanks to our sponsors and all who attended. Be sure to thank the individuals and businesses who supported this fun and sucessful event. We look forward to you joining us next year for another tournament with fine weather and record-breaking scores!

Thank You!Our Donors - 2010

Land conservation gathers and multiplies the contributions of many. There are dozens of volunteers out monitoring conserved proper-ties and building and maintaining trails. Many more help govern our organization, stuff en-velopes and spread the word of conservation. And hundreds of donors provide financial and inkind support for Stowe Land Trust’s work.

You act together as Stowe Land Trust mem-bers to create the future of our community.

The patchwork of forest and farm land, scenic views and trails that allow us to enjoy nature define the Stowe area and give us a sense of place. All of us who cherish our natural land-scape owe a special debt of thanks to these donors who are the foundation of Stowe Land Trust’s ability to conserve land and fulfill our stewardship obligations.

As we take stock of this year’s accomplish-ments, we are profoundly grateful to the Charter members of the Pinnacle Society who contributed $1,000 or more during SLT’s 2010 membership year.

Thank you Charter members!

Create Your Legacy - Make a Planned Gift to Stowe Land Trust

How should I refer to SLT in my estate plans?SLT should be designated as: Friends of Stowe Conservation, Inc. d/b/a Stowe Land Trust, a nonprofit charitable organization with offices in Stowe, Vermont. What is SLT’s taxpayer identification number?03-0307155

Does SLT need to know my bequest intentions? We recognize that you may wish to keep your bequest intentions confidential. How-ever, we greatly appreciate knowing when SLT has been included in an individual’s es-tate plan. This helps with our planning and enables us to express our gratitude for this long-term commitment to our mission.

Do I need to retain legal or financial counsel to establish a planned gift with SLT?SLT can provide information for your at-torney or financial advisor regarding estate gifts to SLT. It is strongly recommend that you involve your personal legal or financial advisor in the process.

What are the tax benefits of bequests?Contributions to SLT, as to other charitable organizations, are not subject to gift or es-tate taxes.

Can I designate how my bequest will be used?We suggest you specify that your bequest be “used in such a manner as the Board of Directors of the Stowe Land Trust shall,in its prudent discretion, determine.” If you

prefer to restrict your bequest to a particu-lar program, SLT is pleased to work with you to ensure that your wishes will be met.

What are the advantages of making a bequest to SLT?For many people, a bequest offers the op-portunity to make a more substantial gift than would be possible during one’s lifetime. For those with retirement accounts, real es-tate, or other assets that have appreciated over time, it may not be possible or advis-able to use these assets to make an outright contribution. These assets can be designated instead to a planned gift to maximize tax and other financial benefits.

For more information about planned giving, please visit http://www.stowelandtrust.org/support/plannedgiving/ or contact Executive Director, Heather Furman at 802.253.7221or [email protected].

Therese Lepine and her three sisters grew up exploring the forest and fishing streams in the Sterling Valley near their family’s Mud City dairy farm. This time spent outdoors forged a life-long connection with the land that led them to purchase and conserve many of the places they considered to be special. At the age of 85, Therese Lepine passed away in her home with her family at her side. She led an exciting life working as a decoder at the Navy’s Scofield Barracks in Hawaii then returning to Vermont to work for General Electric until Senator George Aiken was in search for a secretary with an agricultural background. She spent 25 years in Washington D.C. as secretary to Senator Aiken before retiring to her home in Mud City where she became the third hand in operating the home farm.

Stowe Land Trust Loses Conservation Friends

Andre A. Valcour began working with the Morristown Conservation Commission, The Nature Conservancy and Stowe Land Trust in 2006 to conserve 10 acres of agricultural fields and nearly 20 acres of bog adjacent to the Morristown Bog Natural Area. Andy spent a lot of time managing his land and recently transferred ownership of the conserved lot to his son Andre Jr. On July 20th at the age of 69, Andy died peacefully with his family present at his home. Andy was born and grew up in this area, raising seven children with his wife Marthe at their family farm on Randolph Road in Morristown. He was a member of the St. Albans Co-op, producing milk for products throughout New England. Even in retirement, Andy was an active member of the farming and Morrisville community in his service to a variety of volunteer posts with local and regional organizations including the Morristown Planning Commission and USDA Farm Service Agency.

Mary Nichols was born in Vermont and after spending time in Con-necticut and Hawaii she settled in Stowe where she managed Gold Brook Campground and Nichol’s Lodge with her husband John Nichols. In 2001, the Nichols family contacted Stowe Land Trust to look at options for con-serving the 37 acre agricultural field adjacent to the lodge and campground which serves as the scenic gateway to Stowe village and host to the popular Stowe Antique & Classic Car Show. Mary was dedicated to her family as caregiver to her mother-in-law Kay Nichols and through her close relation-ship with her grandchildren. After an admirable battle with cancer, Mary Nichols passed away on July 24, 2010.

Their love of the land will endure for future generations because

they made the deicsion to permanently conserve these

special places.
