At the end of the day, students gathered along verandahs and walkways between B and F blocks to clap and cheer for our Gleam Team. The ladies were chuffed with the gesture and headed to their duties for the afternoon with big smiles on their faces and a spring in their steps. The learning being demonstrated by students through their classroom work and assessment tasks are bringing smiles to faces too staff and students. Students in the early years classes love coming to the office to share their work. They can articulate why their work was chosen to be shared. The key questions students are asked when visiting classrooms include: 1. What are you learning? 2. How are you doing? 3. How do you know? 4. How can you improve? 5. Where do you go for help? As parents/caregivers, you can also ask these questions of your children. This helps them to be reflective about their learning and to take ownership for their learning. The questions staff ask of themselves and others are similar - 1. How are students going in their learning? 2. How do we know? 3. What are we doing to improve studentslearning? 4. How do we know it is working? In the Wellbeing section of the newsletter there is information about Getting Along from the You Can Do It program which we have adopted this year. This has been a tough term for all which means we have to work together – get along – to keep happy and safe. Using hands and unacceptable language because we are angry is not demonstrating being able to get along nor is it being respectful of others in our school environment. Follow-up conversations and restorative practices happen for such unacceptable behaviours. At Moura State School we will be safe, be responsible, be courteous and be learning while striving for great things. SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY The Department of Education is conducting shorter, sharper School Opinion Surveys this year for students, staff and parents. The surveys will comprise a short number of questions about learning arrangements in Term 2, as well as a small number of the regular SOS questions that more broadly reflect the entire year. The online survey will be available for completion until Friday 17 July 2020. Below is the information for parents about the survey. Year 4-6 students and all staff have also been invited to complete the survey. Students will complete the survey at school. Parents and Caregivers are invited to participate in this year’s School Opinion Survey and have a say about schooling during the COVID- 19 lockdown. You are also given the opportunity to provide feedback about our school more generally. Participation in the survey is anonymous and you are encouraged to take this opportunity to have your say. The survey form has been designed so that it can easily be completed on a computer or smartphone. STATIONERY SUPPLIES With holiday time approaching, please start a shopping list of items your child will need to restock depleted supplies. Pencils, erasers and other such items should be put at the top of the list. LOST PROPERTY As we come to the end of another term, it is time to check that your children have all of their winter clothing, lunch boxes, hats and water bottles. A few discarded items are to be found in classrooms, in the lost property box and in the Hall. Please start doing a stocktake of your children’s gear and come searching for any missing items. Any items not collected at the end of the term will be cleaned and sent to St Vinnies. GENERAL REMINDERS 1. NO HAT, NO PLAY! A hat is one that has a

broad brim – not a cap. 2. NO hoods on jumpers/vests.

EVERY DAY! SKATE PARK Students are to come from home straight to school every morning. NO stopping at the skate park for a play. The same is to happen in the afternoon. Students are to go directly home to check in and then go out. RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN Bronze Certificates: Bronze certificates have been presented to the students who diligently followed the 4B’s for the first 8 weeks of Term 1. These students were also at school for at least 3 out of 5 days every week. With COVID interrupting our lives in Term 2, silver certificates will not be presented for this term. We will start afresh in Term 3 will all students being eligible for earning the Silver certificate. Getting Along means working well with teachers and classmates, resolving disagreements peacefully, following the rules of the classroom and making positive contributions to school, home and the community including protecting the rights of others and looking after the environment. Examples of getting along behaviour are being helpful when working in a group, listening and not interrupting when someone else is speaking, talking rather than fighting when someone acts unfairly, not breaking classroom rules, helping others in need, volunteering for a worthy causes and cleaning up the environment. Positive Habits of the Mind that help develop Getting Along behaviour in a young person include: Being Tolerant of Others - accepting that

everyone acts unfairly towards others some of the time, and not making overall judgments of people’s character (“good person,” “bad person”) based on their differences or behaviour.

BUS PROCEDURES

FROM 25 MAY 2020

Bus students will follow the usual routine – If ON the bus in the morning, it is expected they will be ON the bus in the afternoon. If OFF the bus in the morning, it is expected they will be OFF the bus in the afternoon.

Prep students who are bus travellers will still be escorted to the bus line up area every day whether or not they are travelling on the bus that afternoon. Parents pick their child up from the main gates of the school.

Changes to bus routine need to be made to the Office by 2:30 pm so that the office team can adjust the bus rolls and get messages to the child about the change. Please also notify your bus driver of any changes.

News

Solar Systems Students from Prep H have recently shown an interest in learning about the planets of our solar system. We have been learn ing songs, research ing information about the planets, (including a certain dwarf planet that USED to be classed as a planet!) and then we decided to make our own solar system.

We worked this learning in with learning about the letter ”p”, and made paper mache planets out of paper. Then, of course, we needed to paint them. So we went back to our research, made a list of the colours that we would need, and learned about which colours we could mix together to make what we needed. Then for the letter “i” we used our research in our English lessons to write some interesting facts about the planets to include with our learning display.

Prep H have really enjoyed this learning, and we are excited to show off our solar system when we can have visitors to our classroom.

Tchoukball Tournament The lunchtime Tchoukball tournament got under way this week. Each team will get to play 4 games before the top teams move through to the finals. The matches have been great to watch and a lot of teachers have been popping their heads in and are very impressed with the skills on show. The results so far for round 1 are:

This term in English, 4C have been creating their

own Quest stories. Below is Archie’s awesome

story.

The Quest of the Hidden Witch Orientation

Splash! bang! “What was that!” whispered

Sebastian in curiosity. Sebastian and Mitch were

out looking for gems as usual in the freezing

Winter, which is what the boys love to do for the

village. ”Hey Sebastian can you go check that

noise out. I think it came from over near the river”

demanded Mitch who was the oldest and strongest

of the two brothers. As Sebastian headed off he

went through the swampy, thick forest. The forest

has always been there as a friend to the village.

The forest is so tall and thick nothing can see

through, making the village very well hidden and

peaceful. There has been no need for warriors, as

it is also protected by the dragon. As Sebastian got

to the river, suddenly, a dragon came out of no

where. “Ahhh!” screamed Sebastian as he jumped

for cover. The dragon found him and told him that

there is a hidden, evil witch, Wilda, who has found

the village and is planning an attack to steal the

gems for herself. “The gems protect the village”,

thought Sebastian. “So she would be unstoppable

and destroy the village with her power.” The

Dragon said sternly, “Some people have to go and

stop her. Wilda is stuck on a deserted island,

where she is telling her army of dragons the plan to

destroy the village”.

Event

Whoosh! the dragon was gone with the blink of an

eye. Confused and scared, Sebastian walked back

to Mitch and decided not to tell him just yet. With

their gems, the boys returned to the village and

delivered them to the Powerhouse used to shoot

power from the gems to keep the village protected.

Sebastian told the Powerhouse keeper what the

dragon told him but he didn’t believe him neither

did Mitch. That night they had a party and

Sebastian tried to tell everyone there. “Go away

you undersized, scared weakling” scoffed the

village people. No one would even believe him.

Then, suddenly there was a blood curdling screech,

all of the village people turned to see what was

happening. They saw a deadly fight between two

dragons closest to the mountains. The attack

lasted all night people had no idea what was

happening. Then they recognised one dragon who

had finally come back but without his owner. After

he had defeated the other dragon, he told

everyone that the hidden witch Wilda was creating

a revolution to destroy the village. Everyone looked

shocked.

Event

“Only two people can go with me. Who will go?” the

dragon said fiercely. “I will!” cried Mitch “and I will

pick the next person” the dragon snorted. He

raised his head and said “Sebastian.” There was a

long pause before the dragon spoke again.

“Alright, you two get ready. I want to see you at my

cave tomorrow morning”. The next morning,

Sebastian and Mitch were waiting sleepily for the

dragon, and then the dragon came. They all

jumped into the river. Mitch fell in and Sebastian

and the dragon jumped in after. They started

swimming through the river, it lead out to the

ocean. “Now where!” Mitch demanded. “Hop on

my back and I will fly you over to the Island,” the

Dragon said sternly. They both climbed on, Mitch

jumped on quickly but Sebastian climbed on

cautiously as though it was a tiger about to pounce

on him. He got on and the dragon took off roughly.

One day later they found the island. It had a thick

forest and had sharp pointy rocks as sharp as

dragons teeth around the entrance so no one

could get on. It was very loud; they could hear

blood-curdling roars. SMASH! They landed on the

hard ground. Sebastian and Mitch got off and then

they went to find Wilda. They went through the

forest it was thick, dark and there where little eyes

peeking out of the little holes in the trees.”Hey

Sebastian can you shine the torch light on those

creepy eyes?” the dragon demanded. Sebastian

turned the light to shine at the eyes “they are little

spiders” Sebastian mentioned. The spiders were

big and hairy with red dots on their backs. “AHHH!”

Mitch screamed with fear, “Shine the torch away!”

he yelled. Sebastian quickly turned the torch

straight and they kept on walking. Mitch didn’t

walk fast because he was scared of spiders so it

took them two days to get through there. “Finally”

Mitch sighed. They started walking tiredly down a

little pathway that was old and was carved out of

very strong stone. Then they came to a castle. It

was Wilda’s!

Complication

There were heaps of dragons that were black, red,

brown and blue in colour. Sebastian ran for the

river knowing that dragons can’t breathe under

water, but suddenly, unexpectedly, a blue dragon

came splashing into the water. Sebastian went Continued next page

2F Happenings In Year 2F, our Science unit was push and pull. We had to make a toy that moved from a push or pull. Our assessment was not marked on our toy, it was marked on how well we explained and observed our toy. In our assessment, we had to draw our toy and label it. It had to be very detailed. We observed our toy by going onto the carpet and watching how our toy moved. The most popular toy was a car, but there were also some trucks, a snake and Ferris wheel. In a part of our assessment, we had to change our toy, but it had to affect how our toy moved. It was fun! By Maddi and Olivia

deeper. Then the dragon’s pace picked up. “It

is swimming!” said Sebastian astonished. He

kept going, and then he noticed it was

breathing underwater as well! Sebastian

quickly swam back up and told them that the

blue dragons could breathe underwater. Then

all the dragons came roaring straight towards

them. The good dragon started fighting them

and Mitch started stabbing them. They

defeated all the dragons…. then Wilda came.

Event

Mitch started charging at her but her dagger

easily cracked his sword in two. Then the

dragon came charging at her and she swiftly

dodged it. Sebastian was the only one left. He

started shooting arrows at her. It was his

fathers’ old bow that he was given to him

before he died. Wilda gasped she could not

break them or dodge them. Then she started

charging at Sebastian with her dagger held

high but then a shield came over Sebastian

and Wilda was knocked out.

Resolution

The dragon and the two brothers made their

way home with Wilda in a cage. When they got

back to the village it was surrounded by

dragons.

Were they good dragons or where they evil? Did

they get Wilda in time?

This term in English, 6M have been writing letters to the future students of 2059. Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks for some fantastic letters from 6M!

Dear Year 6 student of 2059,

Hi, my name is Rosabella Elgowhary and I am writing to you so you can learn

about your past and know what it was like to live in the year 2020. I am an

11 year old girl with short brown hair and freckles and I go to Moura State

School. Next year I will go to Moura State High School. I live in Moura,

across from the Lions Park.

Right now Covid-19 is affecting the world population majorly. If you don’t

know what Covid-19 (or coronavirus) is, it is a virus that makes you have

symptoms like the cold and flu and if you are over 50, have chest infections,

asthma, or already have a disease and you catch Covid-19 you can die from it

so it is very serious. I feel like Covid-19 has made people more aware of

proper hygiene. We had to go into lockdown and only people with parents that

classify as ‘essential workers’, like teachers or miners, had to go to

school. Everybody still had to learn, even from home, on their laptops or

computers. I think we will (and are) recovering from Covid-19 quickly and

hope we don’t catch a 2nd wave! Do you have viruses going around often in the

future?

The most common trends right now are an app called Tik Tok and 2 games called

Minecraft and Fortnite. Minecraft is a game were you build things out of

stuff you kill or destroy. For example: you kill a sheep to get wool and

meat, or if you destroy a piece of coal you get the piece of coal. Fortnite

is a game I do not know much about but lots of people get addicted to it. Tik

Tok is an app were you post videos and people watch them on repeat. There is

a few challenges and dances that lots of people try and most people fail.

My interests and hobbies are: ballet, reading, and playing with my animals. I

have 2 chickens named Hazelnut and King, a dog called Sparkles and a guinea

pig named Cookie. I love playing with them and think people should get

outside and play with their animals more often. I also love reading and think

people should get off their devices and read more often as well. I have done

ballet since I was 5 and love it although it sometimes makes it hard to get

my homework done. I hope people dance and have fun dancing in the future. Do

you have lots of pets in the future or do you all live in cities that don’t

allow many?

My brother got a huge iPad last week. By the way, an iPad is a piece of touch

screen technology with a flat screen that you can play games and contact

people on. My brother boasts way too much about his ‘huge, high technology,

oh so awesome iPad’ and he might even be getting a second hand phone! It is

so unfair! I think I should get an iPad as big as his so I’m saving all my

money for one. We are constantly upgrading our technology, but you must have

way more advanced technology in the future! Just think that 28 years ago

smartphones weren’t even invented! Some technology is good because it doesn’t

affect the environment but some are just horrible to nature. Have you stopped

climate change?

I hope this letter has given you a better understanding of your history and

what it was like to live in the year 2020. Maybe you can find me in the

future (although I will be 50 exactly)?

Farm Safety Calendar Competition
