Vol. 1, Issue 1: Fal l 2017
Dear Friends of Berkeley Ballet Theater,
For three decades, Berkeley Ballet Theater has provided excellent ballet training to children, youth, and adults and fostered a community in which dancers courageously explore their inner artistry and support one another. Generations have grown up in our hallways. Our dancers, past and present, recognize BBT as a uniquely nurturing institution, a place that lives up to its motto: Where All Can Dance. Now it’s time for our hallways—and studios, and offices—to grow up too. We need your help now to realize BBT’s most significant transition in our history: the move to our new home at 1370 Tenth Street. Your contribution to the Move Forward campaign will help launch us as we embark on our first opportunity for significant organizational growth since we moved to College Avenue in 1990. With your support, we will raise $425,000 by the end of the 2017-2018 school year. (This goal represents Phase I of the Move Forward campaign; for more detail on campaign phases, please see page 9.) These funds will pay for construction work and secure BBT’s future as we begin our next chapter.
Please join us as a partner in Move Forward. If you’ve never given to BBT before, now is the time. Imagine for a moment what your life would be like without art. Together, we will ensure that BBT continues to provide a home to Bay Area dancers for years to come.
Embark on the journey with us!

In 2012, BBT’s Board of Directors learned that Berkeley Playhouse, our landlord and co-resident in the Julia Morgan center, intended to expand its programming into the studios that had been our home for 27 years.
This spurred our thinking. At the simplest level, it was clear we needed to find a new home. But, the Playhouse’s expansion also prompted us to imagine what we could provide to our community in larger ways, free from the limitations of the Julia Morgan center. Thus, the dream to bring an extraordinary new dance facility to all of BBT’s dancers and the East Bay arts community was born. Our studios at 1370 Tenth Street offer us something we haven’t had in decades—a home of our own that will grow with us to serve a larger community with new classes, workshops, and outreach programming.
Originally a Canada Dry bottling facility, 1370 Tenth Street is located in the most diverse and blossoming neighborhood in Berkeley; it offers high ceilings, wide open interior spaces, and ADA-accessible ground floor entry.
1370 Tenth Street is fire and life-safety code compliant, more affordable per square foot than the Julia Morgan center, and large enough to immediately improve facilities for our community as well as accommodate our planned growth for years to come.
When you give to the Move Forward campaign, you enable both our literal move to Tenth Street and an enormous metaphoric leap forward for BBT, our dancers, and the community at large. Please contactus to learn more about the specific impact your support can make. 3 4

The project
During our years at the Julia Morgan center, BBT provided excellent training despite the challenges of our location.
Abundant community spaces: Wifi-equipped lounge spaces for students doing homework, parents waiting for dancers, and community members connecting.
TENTH STREET - BBT Main Entrance
BBT is building more than a home. We are building a future for generations of dancers to come: a home that includes spacious ground-floor studios with skylights, high ceilings, and professional-quality sprung flooring to support every dancer’s dreams.

Anyone who has danced in Studio B while skirting Nutcracker costumes and sets, vied with dancers and parents for a few inches of space in the packed hallway or stairwell, been dismayed by an out-of-order restroom, or inadvertently slid across Studio 1 after preschoolers’ indoor recess has turned the marley to ice understands why the BBT community needs and deserves a larger, proprietary, and modern home.

Dedicated dancer dressing rooms: Men’s and women’s changing rooms, separate from restrooms.
Dancer-friendly floors: Our new studios will be built on Harlequin Liberty sprung floors topped with Harlequin Studio marley. Sprung flooring is standard for top companies because it helps prevent dancer injuries including shin splints, fractures, knee problems, tendinitis, and ankle sprains.

“Completion of Phase I construction and fundraising will
allow BBT to maintain all of our current classes
for all divisions.”
The goal
Phase I $425,000Phase I funding will enable the construction of dancer dressing rooms, a faculty changing room, restrooms, administrative offices, costume storage, and two permanent studios with sprung floors. It will also support the construction of two additional semi-permanent, professional-size studios (which will be reconfigured in Phase II). Completion of Phase I construction and fundraising will allow BBT to maintain all of our current classes for all divisions.
Phase II $275,000The two semi-permanent studios created in Phase I will be reconfigured to capture additional square footage and create three large permanent studios, bringing the total number of studios to five (two more than we’ve ever had). We will add a costume design shop as well as additional administrative offices and restrooms. Phase II fundraising will also enable upgrades to all five studios including the addition of energy-efficient lighting, new heat and air-conditioning systems, and state-of-the-art sound systems.

Throughout the Move Forward campaign we will highlight members of the community who are working to create BBT’s home at 1370 Tenth Street.
The plans for BBT’s new home were developed by Shweta Mhatre and Donn Logan of Marcy Wong Donn Logan Architects, a Berkeley firm focusing on innovative and environmentally sound design.
Longtime supporters of the arts, Donn Logan and Marcy Wong have designed projects across the Berkeley area including College of Marin Performing Arts Center, Berkeley Repertory Roda Theater, Cragmont School, Freight and Salvage Coffee House, the Randall Museum, San Jose Community College Performing Arts Center, and Meyer Sound Theater.
Donn Logan is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Crowden School and was integral to their recent successful securing of a new home.

Studio construction is spearheaded by Randy Griffin, a BBT parent and President of
James R. Griffin Construction, a Bay Area firm that has existed
for more than a century.
JRG Construction’s projects include the Mills College
Concert Hall, the Berkeley Botanical Gardens, Stanford
Linear Accelerator, Memorial Stadium Visitor Center, and more than 100 projects on the University of California
Berkeley campus.
In 2016 the firm was recognized for its work
preserving the Julia Morgan Senior Women’s Hall at UC Berkeley and its successful
relocation to the UC Botanical Gardens—
generously donating much of their time.
