for a fashion company
Nan GoldinNan Goldin, a photographer born inWashington D.C, w3as
very interested in documentating the unseen life as I would call
it. She became particularly interested in this field of photography
after her prostitute sister took her own life at the age of 18.
After her studies, she moved to New York where she became very
interested in documenting the music scene, sub culture during the
late 70s early 80s. I was drawn to her work because even though
photography and moving image is about seeing things through a lens,
the idea that you are always seeing life through a lens and via
other peoples points of view, she more documented everything how it
was and how it is. I remember one of the girls in my animation
lecture telling me about the day she was beaten up by her boyfriend
or husband, and she took a pi8cture of her injuries straight after
which I thought was brilliant. I feel her work is a diary of her
life, sub culture and the dark underground life which the public
eye does not see through media and to me this is very
interesting.
I chose this picture because even though it seems hard to
recreate, to me it reminds me of two girls standing in the school
girls toilet. Coming from a girl school and now being much olde4r,
I have realised that through life, bitchiness and hierarchy always
exist, no matter what the trade is or what you are doing. And this
picture reminds me a lot of that. The blonde girl to me looks like
she is the more dominating character. As if she is the girl who
controls everything that the other girls do. She also looks like
the most weirdest and most confident which is why I like her.We can
see there are two girls present in this picture as we can see
through the reflection, and its almost like the second girl is
sandwiched in by this blonde girl. The blonde girl is looking at
us, however the other girl is looking at her which again shows her
dominating presence and her care free confidence.
They are also wearing the same materials that the walls are
clothed in. although I know this I because it is a fashion shoot,
to me it also looks like they are part of this building, that their
lives are here in this dressing room. They look like they are
dancers of that like in the movie Black Swan, but I feel like they
could also be high class prostitutes from the 70s/80s in France,
where prostitution isnt frowned upon as much as it is now.
Back in the day it was considered wrong for women to work, and
it seemed that the only way they could earn a living is via having
a pimp and selling their bodies and these girls look like they have
become part of that trade and that they are very elegant at what
they do.

SOUND
I didnt use a boom pole to record the sound onto, and
unfortunately the sound on the camera from the movement sounded
very ammeter. So what I dont was recorded the sound onto a recorder
to match the movement on the visual, and then put them in on final
cut pro.

CONCLUSIONAfter I edited and exported the film, I realised that
it had actually turned out much darker than I had expected and had
filmed it. I do remember doing a white balance however it must have
been a little off white, because with the minimal lighting and
settings on the camera, it made it very hard to see what was going
on.
I am very happy with the sound that I have put on. I have put
ambient sound on to match what it going on in the scene and to also
create tension and dramatize what has happened or what is going to
happen.
I used a room which was hired for a week by one of my friend s
as he knew the landlord, however this was a bad idea because as I
know now that it would be helpful if I re shoot a couple of the
scenes in this film, I cant actually do that now unless I find a
new location which is similar.
It was very hard I think to film using two mirrors and get very
good angles without being caught on the mirror opposite which ever
direction I was facing, but it was fun and a good experience. A lot
of shots I couldnt use a tripod. The room was quite small, and the
tripod was givi9ng me minimal movement to show what was going
on.
