2 Moyle Park College Yearbook 2017

Another school year draws to a close and our class of 2017bid farewell to Moyle Park College. As they embark on thenext phase of their young lives, it’s a time of year to reflect onhow far we’ve come and look back on the year gone by. Thisyearbook represents our story and recounts our successes onthe sporting field, the classrooms, our fundraising exploits, theexperiences shared both at home and away.

2016-2017 was a year of huge change in the College. Webade farewell to our former Principal, Mr. Hartigan aftermany years of devoted service to the College. Mr. Hartiganwas Principal for four years leading the school in aprofessional, courteous manner. He will always be fondlyremembered by his many History and English students as atrue professional. We also bade farewell to our devotedScience teacher Mr. Delaney, our wonderful cleaning ladyMrs. Mary O’ Donnell and our dear secretary Noreen aftermany years of dedicated service.

The Marist Brothers celebrate their bicentenary this year, commemorating the foundation of the Marist Order in Francein 1817. The year was one of celebration for the MaristBrothers with communities sharing experiences both at homeand across the wider Marist Community.

The Brother’s house in Moyle Park College opened its doorson the 24th September 1957 with 13 pupils to form the firstMarist school in Dublin. The Brothers have supported thecommunity of Clondalkin for many decades and the schoolhas become an integral part of the community, with studentnumbers growing from 13 in 1957 to 715 today. From suchhumble beginnings 60 years ago in the rural village ofClondalkin to the fine establishment it is today.

This year sees the retirement of the last teaching MaristBrother, Br. Nicholas Smith. Br. Nick as he is fondly known inthe community of Clondalkin, has worked tirelessly in theCollege as Chaplain, teacher, fundraising for charities both athome and abroad. He has mentored a generation of prefectshere in the College in the Marist way, introducing them to thevalues of St. Marcellin Champagnat, founding father of theMarist Brothers. He has been involved in the Summer Schoolhere for over thirty years and we hope that both Br. Nick andthe rest of the Marist Community continue to be an integralpart of the evolving tapestry of Moyle Park College. This yearalso saw the passing of Br. John Hyland, and Br. VivianCassells, former teacher and former Principal of Moyle ParkCollege respectively.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members ofthe College Community, the teaching staff, the SNA’s, thesupport staff and the Marist Brothers for their tireless effortsand their ongoing dedication to the students of Moyle Park

College. Our extra-curricular and co-curricular activitiesenrich the life of theschool, bringingcolour andcreativity to our daily lives. Programmes such as TrinityCollege’s 21st Century Teaching and Learning, the Droicheadprogramme for the induction of newly qualified teachers, theTrinity College CFES (College For Every Student) programme, the Bridge 21 Model among others have enhanced thelearning environment of the College. The dedication of YearHeads, Form teachers, counsellors and SEN (SpecialEducational Needs) staff have ensured that all student needsare catered for.

I would like to thank our Parents Council for their dedicationand commitment to the College over the past year. Theyensure that the voice of the parent body is heard and is partof the ongoing development of the College. They have set upa fundraising committee and have raised over €5000 forvarious projects within the school. They have huge plans fornext year and I ask everyone to continue to support them intheir endeavours. I would also like to thank the localcommunity and the many local businesses who havesupported our efforts throughout the year.

A huge thank you to the Board of Management andchairperson Mr. Tommy Flynn for their support andcommitment to the College. They have provided support andguidance in the development of school projects and areproactive in their endeavours to improve the schoolenvironment, embracing change in leading us on oureducational journey.

I wish to thank the students of Moyle Park College, inparticular the Senior Prefects and the Marist student leaderswho have helped out at our many Information Evenings,Parent Student Teachers Meetings, our Open Evening,Enrolment Evenings, our First Year Taster Day among others.Thank you to all those who have assisted teachers with clubs, sports, classes and committees helping to enhance our schoolenvironment. I want to extend my best wishes to all of ourstudents in particular our exam students as they prepare to sittheir exams in June.

I would finally like to thank the editorial team Ms. Quigley, Mr.McMunn and students Aaron Douglas, David Sullivan, LarryGelzinis, Kamil Hinc, Jeremias Bossert Tome and KacperMyczewski for the wonderful job they have done in producingour yearbook this year.

Editorial:

Many people remember the seventiesfor such things as Babycham, candlewick bedspreads, Commodore64's and the test card on RTE. Iremember the seventies as a timewhen a group of enthusiastic H.Dipstudents all got jobs in Moyle ParkCollege at the same time. We were allyoung, probably wet behind the ears, but we were all enthusiastic aboutbecoming teachers. Little did we knowthen that we would become life-longfriends, but also that we would end ourcareers exactly where we began them,in Moyle Park College. MauriceHartigan was one of this enthusiasticgroup and it is now my privilege toendeavour to provide a brief summaryof his career in teaching.

For many years our classrooms were side by side. While myroom had its chaotic moments, his was always an oasis ofcalm. His classroom had order, consistency and adedication to the advancement of learning. He waspassionate about English and History, the subjects hetaught over many years in Moyle Park. And he took greatpleasure in sharing this passion with his students. He felt sostrongly about making history enjoyable and interestingthat, in cooperation with one of our colleagues, Gerry Fee,he co-wrote history text books which were used countrywideby students studying for state examinations.

Maurice's lifelong interest in education did not just apply toteaching his students. He was interested in education as anintrinsic value. So, while helping his students further their

learning, he also sought to further his own learning. Hestudied for. P. HD in history in Maynooth University. It tookhim several years to complete the course as he would notlet his own personal studies interfere either with his familylife or his teaching career. His chosen topic was theEucharistic Congress in Ireland and, often discussing it withhim, I clearly understood what made him such anexceptional teacher. He could bring the topic of history tolife in a way that captivated all who listened to him.

Given his enthusiasm for education and wanting to makea difference to his students, it was no surprise that Maurice

chose to become involved in schoolmanagement where he could have aneffect, not just on the students he taught, but on all the students in the school.Having spent many successful years as aYear Head, he was experienced andready to take on the onerous role ofDeputy Principal, a role he carried outwith the same diligence as he put into hisentire teaching career. Nowadays, notmany people are willing to put themselvesforward for the difficult task of SchoolPrincipal but, when the vacancy arose inMoyle Park College, Maurice stepped upto the proverbial plate. He brought all thequalities and skills he had developedthroughout his teaching career to his newrole: enthusiasm, diligence, fairness, transparency and dedication.

It would be remiss of me to describe Maurice as just ateacher, a Year Head, a Deputy Principal or a Principal. Ithas been my privilege to have had, and to continue tohave, him as a close personal friend. In many ways wegrew up together as teacher friends and we intend to growold as now-retired friends. It is a great tribute to the ethosof Moyle Park College, and to the Marist Brothers, that somany students and so many teachers remain staunchfriends long after they have left the hallowed halls of theschool.

I feel privileged to be given this opportunity to wish Mauriceand his wife, Mary, all the best in his retirement and I knowthat the entire staff and student body and their parents joinme in these good wishes.

The eight students who were chosen to go on thetrip to L’Hermitage met at the school on Fridaymorning. We got a bus to the airport and took a 2-hour flight to Lyon. When we arrived in Lyon, wewere met by Brother Dijon who took us toL’Hermitage. We were all pleasantly surprised byhow modern L’Hermitage looked. The bedrooms.were just like hotel rooms. The area is so peacefuland quiet. In the evenings, we had our owncommon room to spend time with each other.

On the Saturday, we all headed into the city of Lyon.First, we went to Fourvière, which is a basilicadedicated to the Virgin Mary. We were in awe of theartwork in the church. We went off to the city centre,to do a bit of shopping. We met up with Ms.O’Malley who joined us for a good portion of theday. We had McDonalds for lunch. We took a bustour of the city in the rain. It was still good craicthough. After the bus tour, we went ice - skating. Itwas so funny as barely any of us could do it but wetried and got the hang of it by the end. We went toa huge shopping centre and had a look around andwent to an amazing Italian restaurant for dinner. We went back to L’Hermitage and chilled in thecommon room for the rest of the night.

On Sunday, we got a tour of the building inL’Hermitage. We were shown around the museum.

We went to mass in the chapel and after mass weheaded off on the Champagnat pilgrimage. Wewent to Le Rosey to visit the house whereChampagnat grew up. We also saw the chapel thatwas built using money donated by past pupils allover the world. We travelled to Le Besset and visitedthe remains of Jean-Baptiste Montagne’s home, who was the sick boy who Marcellin visited. Only asmall wall remains of his home. The last stop on thepilgrimage was La Valla. This is the original instituteof the Marist Brothers. We sat at the table where theBrothers and Champagnat had their meals.

On our last day we were shown a bit more aroundL’Hermitage. We were shown the cemetery wheresome of the Marist Brothers are buried. The mainthing we were shown however was Champagnat’sbedroom. This was the room in which Champagnatstayed while in L’Hermitage and the room in whichhe passed away. We packed up then and headedhome.

Death of two stalwarts of the Irish Marist World September 2016.

We will always remember September 2016 with sadnesswhen we lost two men who made a significantcontribution to the education of young people at MoylePark College.

Vivian Cassells began his fulltime teaching career inMarian College and also set up the first GuidanceCounselling service in the country with a specificallydesigned purpose suite for the students there. In June1977 he joined the Marist community and wasappointed Principal of Moyle Park College where heremained until 1985.

His greatest legacy was his foresight and ability to getthe Department of Education with the help of the localcommunity to build an extension to the College whichincluded extra classrooms., a number of specialistrooms. for woodwork, metalwork, technical graphics, art, science laboratories and a Sports Hall. It was duringhis time that the famous ‘Rock’ came into existence toraise funds to repay back the loan for the extension. Thisgave the students of the College access to acomprehensive curriculum to allow all of them to reachtheir full potential.

As Principal of Moyle Park he was also at the forefront ofprotests at the abandonment of the ex- quota guidancecounselling posts in the early 1980s.

Vivian always saw the good in people and enjoyedmany trips to Croke Park to support his beloved Royals. His ‘joie de vivre’ and positive attitude were contagiousand had an uplifting effect on others. It is a privilege tohave known and worked with him.

Vivian died on 9th September 2016. ‘Ar dheis De go raibh a anam uasal’.

by Bro. PJ McGowan

Bro. John Hyland joined the Marist community and staffof Moyle Park in 1987 having spent nine years in MaristCollege in Athlone. John spent two happy years in theReligion Department bringing his Mater Dei training andexperience from Marist College to the benefit of the REDepartment. He was a fluent French speaker and taughtFrench.

He was appointed Provincial of the Order in 1989 until1996 remaining in the community and after asabbatical year in New York, he returned to Moyle ParkCollege staff in 1997 for two further years.

In 1999 he was appointed Principal of Marist CollegeAthlone. In 2004 he joined the Marian CollegeCommunity.

John had a lifelong interest in Gaelic Football andHurling and he had a great passion for everythingOffaly. He was truly a faithful son of the Faithful county. He spent many Sundays in Croke Park and he had agreat ability to analyse a game. John was a man ofgreat faith and humility, able to empathise and givesupport to anyone going through a difficult time. Hisapproach to education was firmly rooted in the Maristeducation ethos which he drew from our FounderMarcellin Champagnat. John’s legacy will live long inthe hearts of those whose lives he touched.

John died on September 10th 2016. May he rest in Peace.

History of the Code Club

In the summer of 2015, I enrolled in a drop-inworkshop on Computer Systems. at TCDwhere I received a free Raspberry Pi. The Pi wasleft in it's box for a number of months untilKacper Maczka and Dominik Bill startedtinkering with the Pi and Python in the spring of2016. The students began to investigate theattributes of the Raspberry Pi during lunchbreaks and our results of our investigationswere showcased at the Google Foundry in May2016.

A coalition of one teacher and two students hasevolved into a team of twenty senior studentsand twenty junior coders. The senior studentshave taken ownership of the project and havebecome leaders in their roles as mentors to thejunior students. The students have rebrandedtheir project as Dcode22. Check us out athttps://twitter.com/Dcode22

21st Century Teaching and LearningThe coding project allows hands-on, kinestheticlearning, it seeks to nurture the concept ofstudent lead learning using 21st centurypedagogical approaches. Collaboration andsharing of knowledge is an integral part of howthe coders work. At Moyle Park College thereare a large number of self-taught coders.

Our work in 2016-2017Sean Hampson has written a program to allowa temperature sensor to work on an Arduino.Jack Byrne and Mihai Soreanu have composedmusic on an Arduino using a salvaged buzzer.Efosa Eguavoen and Kacper Maczka haveprogrammed a pH sensor to work on aRaspberry Pi. Dominik Bill has written code inPython and Scratch to allow a sequence ofLEDS to work on a Raspberry Pi. David Treacy,Emmet McDonald, Steven Thomas and LukasMisiulis have created a sub group to investigate3D design and 3D printing.

Our trip to GoogleThe senior coders were invited to Google on17th February 2017 to attend workshops inCareer Development and Computer Science. The students had the opportunity to learn howa search engine works and design their ownanalog search engine.

On the 21st September 2016 our 3rd yearGeography students set off from MoyleparkCollege to visit their home city as tourists; somefor the first time.

Taking the bus into Thomas Street we got off andwalked to our first stop to see how Viking andmedieval Dublin came to be. There was afashion show of the clothes people wore at thattime.

We left Christchurch Cathedral and began ourwalking tour of the city; through time seeing howDublin has grown and expanded, stopping atDublin Castle, onto the Georgian period ofCollege Green and across O’Connell bridge tothe GPO and back through Trinity college.

Next up to Grafton Street and Stephen’s Greenfor a well deserved break and onto the VikingSplash tour. This part of the tour took us throughfrom Viking to 21st Century Dublin as well asexpansion of the Docklands and IFSCdevelopment.

We really got a taste of Dublin expansion anddevelopment through time.

Then it was back on the 13 Bus home!

Dublin Airport’s terminal two was the place to be in theearly hours of Monday 20th February, as senior historystudents and their teachers departed for a history trip toMunich. Safe to say excitement was in the air!

After arriving in Munich, and getting the bus to the hotel,it was time to see what Munich has to offer. However, food was needed. The teachers definitely didn’t want agroup of hungry, cranky teenagers in tow! A quick lunchwas had, and then the walking began. We had beenwarned about the walking! Along with getting lots ofexercise, we really got a feel for the historic city. We gotto visit the city’s main square, Marienplatz ( our meetingpoint for the week!) as well as seeing some city surfersdoing their stuff. A fancy Italian dinner was had, beforewe retired to bed.

Tuesday started off with a visit to Dachau ConcentrationCamp, the first of the Nazi concentration camps. Therewas a dark sense in the air, with heavy rain toaccompany it. Our legendary guide did his best to liftour mood, while also sharing his knowledge with us.Munich Olympic Stadium was next on the agenda. Thefuturistic roof of the stadium left students in awe. BMWWorld was up next. We were dying to get inside, and itdidn’t disappoint. Getting to sit in cars such as the BMWM6 Coupé was a surreal feeling. One rumour going

around was that Mr. Doyle ordered his very own BMW,but unfortunately it hasn’t yet been seen in Moyle Park!To finish off the jam-packed day, a game of bowling wasenjoyed. The teachers had great fun playing pool, butthe quality of play was questionable!

The next day was spent in Nuremberg, with visits to theMuseum of Fascination and Terror, and the War CrimesMemorial Museum. That evening we visited a traditionalGerman restaurant for the last supper. Seeing thewaiters in traditional Bavarian clothing raised a fewlaughs, and left others shocked, to say the least.

Even though Thursday was our last day, we made themost of it. A visit to the world-renowned Allianz ArenaStadium was definitely a high point, especially for theChelsea fans! Walking through the player’s tunnel withthe Champions League music playing in the backgroundwas an incredible feeling, one which will never leave us.Many magnificent memories had been created whichwould last a lifetime.

A special thanks to Ms. Roche, Mr. Doyle, Ms.Corscadden and Mr. Houlihan who made the whole trippossible!

Enterprise began this year with all of us beingassigned to think of a product and businessplan by our teachers Ms. Doonan & Ms.Hartigan. We had the next few weeks to makeour product or order it in, and think of a wayto advertise the product.

In December, we had the TY Crafts Fair. It wasan opportunity for us to sell our products andmake some money. It went very well, we sold alot of our products and students and teacherswere very interested in it.

In March, some of our groups were chosen torepresent the school at IT Tallaght for theEnterprise Finals. It was a great day as we gotto show our products to the judges at anational level.

Overall, enterprise was one of the best subjectsthis year and we learned a lot that we can takeinto life if we choose to set up our ownbusiness.

This year’s green flag is for energy. We formed thecommittee made up of teachers and students to tryreduce and conserve energy around the school.

We ran different awareness campaigns by makingposters, conducting surveys, decorating the GreenSchool’s Notice Board.

We put signs on all the light switches and a littlenotice in all the rooms. to help remind teachersand students to turn off anything electrical they

were not using . Energy saving bulbs were installedall around the school, as well as computers in thecomputer rooms. set on timer.

This was a whole school effort from both staff andstudents. Students from 1st year right up to 5th yearwere involved.

After our successful inspection we will be awardedour 2nd Flag at an award ceremony in May.

Thank you to all who took part!

The 2017 ski trip was to Prato Nevosa,Italy.Doorstep skiing ensured maximum time on theslopes as the more advanced skiers were able to skiin and out of the hotel but for the beginners all youhad to do was walk for a minute and you were ableto start. We went as a group of around 40 studentsand 5 teachers with the surprise return of Mr. Kenny.

A half 7 alarm clock had everyone up and ready togot to breakfast at 8 and to be out on the slopes byquarter past for extra practice before our 9 o'clock. My group consisted of 9 students and our brilliantinstructor Marco.

At 11 o'clock we would go down to the town centreand we would have our lunch. Our second lessonstarted at one o’clock so that meant we had plenty

of time to go skiing with the teachers that was if theywere up for it.

The village was made up of lots of hotels andapartments which meant that we met a lot of newpeople on the slopes and after-ski activities.

The trip was an all round success from start to finishas there were no serious injuries everyone got alongwith each other great and most important everyonehad the chance to try and new sport in which mostof us enjoyed. I myself and a good few beginnerstudents were able to go from stepping into a skiboot for the first time to being able to easily rushdown the red runs and some students were evenable to complete the black run flawlessly.

Debating has returned to Moyle Park with senior cyclestudents from TY and Fifth Year taking part in thenational team debating competition run by ConcernInternational.

The Concern Debates have been running for 33 years, involving over 50,000 post-primary students in Ireland.Debating topics related to global developmentencourages participants to explore and be challengedby some of the world’s most important issues.

By taking part, students also learn the valuable skills ofresearch and debating. Some are inspired to go on tobecome advocates for social change both at home andabroad. Around 140 schools across the countryparticipate annually, including since 2014 schools inNorthern Ireland.

Each team of four is assigned a motion, then weregiven three weeks to research, write and practice theirspeeches, before debating against another school.

This years panel debated motions such as ‘Endingworld hunger by 2030 is an impossible dream’,‘International agreements on climate change are aload of ‘hot air’, and 'France should allow religious

symbols in public institutions.' Moyle Park faced teamsfrom Deansrath Community College, Holy FamilyCommunity School and Lucan Community College.

Several team members also attended research anddebate training run by Concern International. Otherstudents were invited to take part in the Leinster trialsfor the Irish World Schools Debating Team.

With a core panel of Daniel Bergel, Aaron Douglas,Jack Leahy, Emmet McDonald, Lukas Misiulis, RyanMurphy, Steven Thomas, and Fuad Usman –Dio welook forward to competing in next years competition. Itis hoped that junior level students will get a chance toparticipate in the Matheson Junior Debating NationalMace competition.

Marist Cupby Mr. McMunn

There was great excitement, enjoyment and

comradeship last Tuesday, the 4th of April 2017, at

Marian college in Ballsbridge, Dublin. The Moyle Park

first year boys (the combined efforts of our basketball,

soccer and Gaelic football teams.) emerged

triumphant in the Marist cup competition!

The Marist cup is a competition that has been running

since 2011. There are three teams. involved, the

three Marist brothers schools in Ireland: Moyle Park

college (the 2017 winners!); Marist college Athlone

and Marian college Ballsbridge, Dublin (our hosts).

Two schools have dominated this competition:

2017: Moyle Park college

2016: Marist college Athlone

2015: Moyle park college

2014: Moyle park college

2013: Marist college Athlone

2012: Marist college Athlone

2011: Marist college Athlone

The Marian college boys and their mentors, however,

can be immensely proud of their efforts this year. They

played with determination, passion and vision

throughout the Gaelic football part of the

competition; their young Gaelic footballers produced

some excellent passages of play and deservedly won

the GAA section. In addition to this, their basketball

and soccer players were skillful and competitive

throughout.

Marian college, as mentioned earlier, is a Marist

Brothers Catholic secondary school in Ballsbridge,

Dublin. Their impressive school is adjacent to the

equally impressive Aviva stadium (the old Lansdowne

road). Their school motto is 'Optimum Optare' - the

pursuit of excellence. With regards to winning the

Marist cup, this pursuit will continue ( they are the only

school who have not won the competition; of course,

like Mayo's pursuit of an All-Ireland senior football

title (last won in 1951!) their day, on the evidence of

their excellent performances last Tuesday, will

certainly come.)

The boys from Marist college Athlone performed

admirably on the day also. These young athletes, who

journeyed the furthest to this excellent competition,

demonstrated wonderful skills in all three sports. In

the GAA competition the Marist college boys

showcased an array of superb skills: high catching,

excellent long-range scoring and clean, fair tackling

Page 25: Moyle Park Yearbook 2017 LR1 · 2017. 9. 28. · Moyle Park College Yearbook 2017 3 Publication of the Yearbook as always marks the end of the school year. This year 2016/2017 we

that was a joy to watch. The future of Gaelic football

is alive and well in the county of Westmeath! Also, in

Basketball and soccer, they showed wonderful

determination, team-work and flair in all their

matches. They were a credit to their coaches and to

their school- well done to all involved!

However, of course, to the victor go the spoils... Moyle

park first year boys were simply outstanding on the

day!! All six coaches, Ms. Corscadden and Ms. Roche

(Basketball), Mr. Martin and Mr. McMunn (Gaelic

football) and Mr. Condren and Mr. Anderson (Soccer)

were delighted and proud of all the students involved.

Principal of Moyle park Ms. Cahalane and deputy

principal Mr. Mcgowan were delighted with the effort

of the lads and, of course, so proud that we were

victorious!

The GAA team, who have only played two matches so

far this year, acquitted thems.elves superbly despite

losing their matches. The first year GAA players, (a lot

of whom are playing Gaelic football for the first time)

wore the Moyle park jersey with pride and played in a

fashion befitting the jersey. Their manager Mr. Martin

and selector Mr. McMunn were very proud of the

students effort and behaviour on and off the pitch.

Their manners and respect for the opposition, referees

and their mentors was something special to witness.

This team is going to continue to improve and will be

a formidable outfit in the very near future.

Moyle park soccer team had two teams. involved; Mr.

Anderson and Mr. Condren both had a team each.

Gifted, imaginative and passionate, these lads played

with a fantastic will to win, which gave great joy to

their coaches. Victories, from the comprehensive (5-0)

to the hard-fought, kept coming and no team could

stop us! With two Moyle park college teams. involved

the inevitable happened... Mr. Anderson's team of

champions versus Mr. Condren's conquerers... two

Moyle park teams. competing to see which team was

number one! Bragging rights go to Mr. Condren's

team... Mr. Anderson, naturally, wasn't too upset,

delighted that both Moyle park teams. performed with

such grit, grace and sense of fair play. Well done

lads!!

Last but by no means least is our basketball team. Led

by Ms. Roche and Ms. Corscadden, our lads avoided

double-dribbles and produced lovely lay-ups,

amazing assists, fabulous fast-breaks and terrific three

pointers! Alliteration aside, these students were a

credit to thems.elves, mentors and school. Our school

is lucky to have such a respected reputation in

basketball, at all age grades, and these first year boys

continued on this proud tradition. Success does not

come easy; incredibly, like our soccer team, our boys

were unbeaten in the Marist cup! Inevitably, there was

some incredible individual performances, but this

success was built on a foundation of work ethic (life

lessons being learned on the court). Our respected

coaches, Ms. Roche and Ms. Corscadden, (like the

GAA and soccer mentors) were over the moon with

the results and immensely proud of their team.

Excellent performance guys... well done!

A hearty congratulations to all the players and

coaches involved from Moyle park college!!!

This year, very few students in first year had Gaelicfootball as their main sport. Therefore, areasonable effort was put into introducing as manystudents as possible to the game. A panel fromMoyle Park, along with 10 other Dublin colleges, attended two blitz days out in the GAA center ofExcellence in Abbotstown in September andOctober. On these days it was good to see playerslike Aidimo and Jason Power take to Gaelic footballwith a gradual improvement in their efforts to beseen, over the course of the two days.

In addition, it was great to see many first years getto know each other as they learned the skills ofGaelic football. This included Setanta Higgins,Craig Reilly and Kian Hampson, who are allinterested in Gaelic football, as well as the likes ofTitas Adamonis and Tighe Kealy who might not bethe biggest of stature, but as they gradually got toknow the other first years, became more involved

and combined better in the play. They haveundoubted football skills and they showed quite anaptitude for Gaelic football at these blitzes.

After the blitzes there was a few months’ delaybefore the first year Gaelic football league startedthis year due to the weather and the scheduling offixtures for other teams in the college. This is alwaysan important issue for those involved with studentsas one seeks a balance between academicactivities and sports. Eventually our first game tookplace in March against local rivals LucanCommunity College. During a highly competitivegame, players like Sean Russell and Ciaran Kirkcovered miles in the middle third of the field.Christopher Boggans, a very skillful player, andMilo Rafter, a very wholehearted player, playedreally well in the forwards, whereas Bobby Flood,Setanta Higgins and Daragh McCabe all playedwell in defence. However, a bigger and stronger

Our 2nd Year Gaelic football team was comprisedof a mixed bunch of players, some whoseexperience is extensive for their age and others whoare only relatively new to the sport. Despite beingaware of this the team had a strong spirt and wereextremely competitive. Unfortunately we were metby more experienced opposition in the endresulting in early retirement from the competition;however this should not overshadow the level ofimprovement the boys made throughout theircampaign both as individuals and as a team.

In preparation for our league campaign we playedDrimnagh Castle. This was an excellent opportunityto experiment with our team and assess ourstrengths and weakness. We had 30 plus playersout with us on the day which demonstrated theboy’s appetite to earn a jersey for a place on thestarting 15 for our first league game.

The first league game was against Salesians Collegeof Celbridge, and all credit to Salesians they were anexcellent team who have clearly played togetherfrom a young age. Salesians won easily on the daydespite our lad’s best efforts, the onlydisappointment was that Salesians were not enteredinto a much higher division by their managementwhich would have proved to be more beneficial forall concerned. Despite the mismatch Harry Kelly andEuan Curran were impressive early on.

Our next game was at home to Confey Collegeand this was a much better performance from ourboys. The team was starting to take shape andalthough we lost by 5 points there were someexcellent performances from Euan Curran andSenan Walsh.

Lucan Community College team got on top at theend of the game.

Our second day out was against local rivalsDrimnagh Castle CBS on a fine day in April. Goal-keeper Tom Healy had a fantastic day between theposts. It was great to see players like James Rogers,Louis Walsh, David White, Eamonn O’Callaghan,Callum Dempsey, Sean Fitzpatrick combining sowell in their play. The two rugby-loving players,Luke Swayne and Nathan Mazingu provided a verystrong line of defence for the team with their veryphysical presence. For those people teaching in theschool that afternoon, the encouragement of Mr.Martin and Mr. McMunn kept everyone abreast ofdevelopments on the field of play. Despite thebattling performance, we were not able to

overcome the hurdle of Drimnagh Castle who wonout comfortably in the end. This second defeatended our interest in the competition.

Our final outing with this first year group was in theMarist cup, a day where 1st year players from eachof the three Marist schools in Ireland come togetherfor a sports day. It was great to see all those involvedin first year Gaelic football enjoy their three gamesagainst the other Marist schools and represent MoylePark with pride.

It is to be hoped that this group of first years comeout and train on with the Under 14 team next yearas they will be the backbone of the college’s gaelicfootball teams for the next few years.

Our last game was our best performance and itcame against Drimnagh College. Lady luck wasn’twith us as we lost by a point. Even though we hada brilliant performance from our goalkeeper PierceMcDonald, which included a penalty save which

any premier league keeper would have been proudof, we couldn’t keep out a last minute goal to bringhuge disappointment among our players. Thisperformance however showed the lads that hardwork and training pays off.

Under 16’s

by Mr. Roebuck

The backbone of this team is a group of third yearstudents, many of whom play together on bothfootball and hurling teams for Round Towers ourlocal GAA club. In terms of organizing a team inthe school, this age group is often the most difficultas it the first time students have to manage thatbalancing act of being able to devote appropriateamounts of time to both their academic andsporting life. This, we believe, is a life skill, which iflearnt at this stage becomes an invaluable skillthroughout life. It is only by being able to achievethis balancing act that students are able to latertake a full and active part in college life at thirdlevel. Not only is that essential for good physical, mental and academic health, it is also vital indeveloping those essential networking skills whichare such an integral part of life spent in a third levelinstitution.

Confidence in this group is good and our firstouting was a challenge game against St.Colmcille’s C.S. in mid October. They were aphysically bigger and stronger team and our teamtook a long time to get into the game. However, itwas great to see the efforts of players like ConorBehan, Adam Byrne, Mathew Kelly and Aiden Kellyas they gradually came to terms with their oppositenumbers and began to influence the game. It wasalso lovely to see the arrival of newcomers to theschool like Nathan Fields who played for the firsttime for Moyle Park in this game. Another first wasthe role filled by Jan Ahmadi playing in goal for theschool.

Our first league outing was against DrimnaghCastle at home on November 15th after the midterm break. This was a relatively straight forwardgame to get the campaign formally underway and

it was good to see fifth years like Alex Doyle andAndrew Rigney perform so well in a Moyle ParkGaelic team. Andrew was set up for quite a fewscores during this game by the likes of EoinRichardson and Mitchell Byrne. Alex dominated atthe back, aided and abetted by the likes of AllenHaverty, Kian McCarton and Stephen Barry and, asa result, Moyle Park ran out easy winners in theend.

Our second league game was a much morecompetitive encounter against Colaiste Cois Life.Great performances by Lu Silawong, Dara Byrne,Karl Spooner and Conor Gallagher ensured MoylePark came out on top by four points, in a verycompetitive encounter, which was only decided asthe game came to an end. During this game, theMoyle park forwards began to play as a unit and itwas possible to see the team finding the form ithad in previous years.

We played our third game in the competition awayto Lucan Community College. This was a gameplayed without many of our first choice players dueto their academic and other extra curricularcommitments. Ross Tully featured for the first timein goal, deputizing for the absent Oisin Douglas.Again Andrew Rigney, aided by Sean O’Mahonyand Matthew Gawronski played really well in theopening half which allowed Moyle Park establishan early lead. Conor Gallagher, Liam Callaghan,Sean McNabb and Scott Munnelly played a superbdefensive game, and during the difficult secondhalf prevented Lucan scoring the goals they badlyneeded. This was a performance displaying moregrit and determination than skill and finesse, bestseen in the defensive efforts of Conor Behan in thefirst half and his efforts along with those of EoinRichardson in the second half to carry the ball upthe hill and attempt to score points. Winning thiscompetitive game meant that we finished top of thegroup and advanced to the quarter-finals of thecompetition.

There was almost a 10-week gap before the nextgame, which is frequently the way at this agegroup, as various schools have mock exams atdifferent times and are unable to fulfill fixtures. There is a great challenge in sustaining regulartraining and momentum in the group. Equally, those students who play a variety of sports areprone to injury as the year progresses. Thus we metClonkeen CBS. in the quarter finals in earlyFebruary. This was a roller coaster of a game. Weled for long stages of the game, yet the absence ofkey players through injury told as coming down thestraight, we could not keep them out and ended uplosing by 5 points and being eliminated from thecompetition following our first loss of the year.

That was a disappointing end to the season, whichhad promised so much. However, that is the natureof school-boy football. Sport is just part of collegelife and sometimes the team focus can beelsewhere, whether that be school work or othersports or activities. We encourage students to beinvolved in as many areas of school life aspossible, as in this way, we know that character isformed

Page 48: Moyle Park Yearbook 2017 LR1 · 2017. 9. 28. · Moyle Park College Yearbook 2017 3 Publication of the Yearbook as always marks the end of the school year. This year 2016/2017 we

The senior Gaelic team in the college is typicallymade up of a group of sixth years supported bystudents from transition year and fifth year. Thisyear we had only three students from sixth yearfeaturing on the team, namely Conor Flannery,Lewis Fagan and Sean Lyons. All other students onthe team came from the other year groups. Thatmeant that we had a particularly young team atsenior level, as many of the other players wereyoung enough to represent the college at Under 16level also.

Our campaign this year began with a challengegame away to Drimnagh Castle our nearneighbours. One of the interesting features of thisgame was the way in which the commitment of fifthyears like Mitchell Byrne and Dean Dillon to their

strength and conditioning programmes have paidoff. Even though Gaelic football is not their mainsport, their individual strength and football brainsenable them to be highly competitive at this sport.Similarly players like Sean Hampson, Sean Lyons,Sean Casey and Adam Eustace have graduallyimproved and developed their skills at the sportand so appear quite at home in a senior Gaelicteam. Such challenge games give players anopportunity to show their progress as the yearspass. This is one of the features of college’sfootball, that as students mature and progressthroughout the period of their college life, theirposition and role within the team can and doeschange. Identifying and making maximum use ofthese developing talents is one of the challenges oflooking after college teams.

Our first competitive fixture in the league wasagainst Templeogue College. This indeed was avery exciting and competitive encounter. The natureof the game was such that both sides had anumber of injured players, all bar one thankfully, were only minor. However, Scott Munnelly’s seasonended with a collision, which left him with an injuryto his elbow. Ross Tully, Liam Callaghan, SeanLyons and Lewis Fagan played heroically defensiveroles in front of goal-keeper Oisin Douglas. TheTempleogue team was strong, skillful and fast, sodespite the best efforts at midfield of ConorFlannery (who spilt an ocean of blood) and EoinRichardson (who ran himself to a standstill), wewere struggling for long periods of the game tostay competitive. Jack Maguire’s introductionadded tremendous speed to the forwards, whereMitchell Byrne, Zak O’Neill and Karl Spooner wereposing a threat and we did manage to open themup for three goals. However, we were not able tokeep them out at the back and the pressureeventually told leaving us losing, comprehensively,in our first competitive game at home in theleague. The only consolation was that Templeoguewent straight through to the final in the competitionand we had battled competitively throughout thegame against them.

The second game was therefore crucial, if we wereto qualify out of our section of the competition. Weplayed HFSC Rathcoole in that game, where we gotoff to the ideal start, scoring a goal inside a minute, that looked like it was straight off the trainingground. That set the tone for the game where wedominated proceedings in the first half. Quick ballfrom Lewis Fagan and Adam Eustace in the halfback line, made it possible for the forwards to keepthe score board ticking over, with midfielder ConorFlannery supporting Andrew Rigney and MitchellByrne’s efforts. However, in a game of two halves, the Rathcoole team took over in the second halfand opened us up for a couple of good goals andthat defeat made it impossible for us to get out ofthe group. A walk over in our third game was notof any consolation at the end.

So walking off the field defeated in December is theend of the Gaelic calendar for those of our studentswho are in sixth year. They have worn the yellowand blue of the college Gaelic team for the finaltime. That is one of the milestone moments forstudents going through the college as it indicatesthat their time in Moyle Park is coming to an end.

Not every student is affected in the same way. Overthe years, one can see that those players who puteverything into training and playing for the collegeget a huge amount out of it. Their time in school isgood and is always remembered with fondmemories. For those who are not as organised oras committed, the memories are different. But forall, it becomes a time, which was their youth andcan never be re-lived. For that reason it isimportant that, as each student gets their time, theyshould sieze their own day. “Carpe Diem” is quotedand remembered widely for just that reason.

The First Year Soccer team enjoyed a relativelysuccessful campaign which was full of ups anddowns, reaching the semi-finals of the West DublinLeague and the quarter finals of the Leinster Cup.A total of seven games were played, winning fourand losing three. They had to play five out of theseven games away, leaving only two home fixtures. Here is the full squad and a brief rundown of thosegames where a few star players were born!

Leinster Cup:

Round of 64 Teams: (1st Round) vs PalmerstownCommunity School – Phobailscoil

Result: Palmerstown C.S 1 vs Moyle Park College 2(Away Fixture)

A mouth-watering local derby match in the firstround of the cup proved to be just that, a game notfor the faint hearted! Moyler went two up with goals

from Joseph Reynolds and a penalty from AidomoEmakhu, Palmerstown managed to nick a late goalfrom a penalty but Moyler stood strong to earn agreat away victory. Jason Power in central midfieldplayed a huge part to help Moyler march straightinto the second round.

Round of 32 Teams: (2nd Round) vs Beneavin DeLa Salle College

Result: Beneavin D.L.S.C 2 vs Moyle Park College 3(Away Fixture)

This was a game full of goals, Moyler thought allwas lost when they went down to 2-1 of a score linenearing the end of the match but managed tosneak two late goals, coming away with a fantasticvictory and progressing into the third round of thecup. Goals on the day came from Tadhg Ward (2)and Titas Adamonis, Jayson Denton was man ofthe match with an awesome display, pulling all thestrings in centre midfield.

Round of 16 Teams: (3rd Round) vs Colaiste an Mi– Navan

Result: Colaiste An Mi 2 vs Moyle Park College 3(Away Fixture)

In the third round of the cup, Moyler were drawnagainst Colaiste An Mi from Navan, a team whowere flying high in their local league and hadrecorded two victories in the previous rounds bydevastating score lines. This game was played inthe MDL grounds in Navan which has a 4G AstroTurf pitch, a privilege to play on and one of the bestsurfaces to be played on in the whole of Ireland.Moyler went two up in the first half, goals fromAidomo Emakhu and Joseph Reynolds andeverything was looking great until Colaiste An Mipulled two goals back bringing the match allsquare! With five minutes remaining, it looked likeextra time was on the cards but que the AidomoEmakhu show, where he picked up the ball in hisown half, dribbled past five opposing players andslotted the ball past the advancing keeper, Moylerhad won the game and had reached the quarterfinals of the competition. The smiles couldn’t bewiped off both managers, Brother Nicholas whowas driving the bus and player’s faces on the wayhome…what a win!

Round of 8 Teams: (4th Round, Quarter Finals) vsBoyne Community School

Result: Boyne C.S 2 vs Moyle Park College 1 (AwayFixture)

Moyler were again up in Navan on the 4G AstroTurf pitch, all of the games in this competitionbeing played away from home. Boyne proved to bea tidy little outfit scoring first from a well workedmove, Aidomo Emakhu equalised and then Moylermissed a spate of chances to go ahead, fromhitting the crossbar and post to blasting over thebar and putting the ball wide. Moyler were to ruethose missed chances and with two minutesremaining, the Boyne centre forward was putthrough on goal, rounding the keeper and tappinginto an empty net, the referee blew his whistleimmediately after the restart, Moyler had lost andwere out of the cup. It was a good run while itlasted, a cruel way to go out but that’s football foryou!

• Overall the First Year Soccer team did very wellshowing encouraging signs going forward to nextyear’s competitions where they will be at underfifteen level.

• Moyler scored a total of fifteen goals in sevengames, with seven different goal scorers.

The U-15’s had a successful year under Mr Carterand Mr Condron who put in a massive amount ofwork in the team. They had a good win againstTempleogue in a 5-0 victory with man of the matchbeing awarded to captain Junior Emakhu.Unfortunately due to goal difference we just missedon on progressing to the knockout stages.

Besides this the team had a brilliant run in the cupand dispatched of Hartstown 4-0 with goalscoming from John Ojewumi (2), Aidomo Emakhuand Kena Onisho, and St Declan’s of Cabra beforemeeting a strong Colaiste Eanna team in thequarter final. We were beaten 4-2 on the day withexcellent performances from Mikey Fowler, JamesFarrell and Zach Donohue.

The year began very positively with a couple ofdominating performances and big wins in both theleague and cup. However, with a lot of playersbeing used for the U19s, along with injuries andthe absence of crucial players, we faded badly asthe season went on.

Although extremely unlucky to lose afterdominating in the cup to Tempelogue college 2-1due to conceding in the last minute, we were well

beaten in the league Semi-final. Although havinglead St. Mark's Tallaght 3-1 we ended up beingwell beaten in a second half collapse whichquestions the desire of some willing to put in thehard defensive shift required to compete with thebest schools in the division. There is no doubtingthe quality of player in Moyler but unfortunately ittakes a lot of hard work to achieve the best resultsso hopefully for this team it'll be produced at U19level next season.

At the start of the year, the first year basketball team isalways a mystery, as all players are new to the school. This year, Ms. Roche and Ms. Corscadden welcomeda number of club players and were hopeful for theforthcoming season. The first years started off theircampaign away to Colaiste Eanna. It was a tightgame throughout with some great driving from DivineObasuyi and shooting from Michael Pavel. Thingswere close throughout but some excellent blockingfrom Miracle Onwumere helped the boys keep in witha fighting chance, however Eanna pulled away in thelast quarter to win the game.

The next challenge was Templeogue but one that thelads were well ready for. Hard yards were put in attraining and the zone defense tightened. Greatdefensive work from Hakeem Salau and BrendanVillanueva meant that Moyler ran out the winners witha 27-20 win.

The next game against Oatlands at home, showed theteam spirit and fight to win the match. Great disciplinefrom the boys especially Giovanni N’Soukpoe, FinnGilleran and John O’Reilly meant that Oatlands found

it hard to score and with excellent shooting fromDaniel Olokun and fast breaks from Benny Mapela,Moyle came out the victors.

The Colaiste Phadraig game was as tight a game asthey come. With scores coming from underneath thebasket from Miracle and drives from Divine, Moylertook an early lead but some poor passing andshowboating from Moyler meant that ColaistePhadraig came back into the game. But great defensefrom Conor Jordan and Andrew Burke as well as anexcellent blocking game from Alex Akinnifesi meantthat Moyler held on to the lead to win 18-15 in a lowscoring game. This win ensured their place in the EastLeinster Quarter Finals.

The Quarter Final against Ard Scoil Ris wasdisappointing for the lads. They came up against agood team, and were well in the game until the thelast quarter when we failed to stop a series of fastbreaks from Ard Scoil Ris. It was a tough loss anddifficult way to finish the season for the lads but itcertainly left us with lots to work on for next year alongwith a bright hope for this group as second years.

Working hard from January the second years were a largegroup of 15 players but all eager to do well. Theywelcomed new members to the squad such as SinclairArms.trong, Mohammed Avtarhanov, Dante Malinowski,Sylvester Eguavoen and Ade Odutola making them muchstronger than they were last year.

They started off their season against Colaiste Eanna inJanuary. A tough first quarter ensued meaning that theyhad to do well in the second. This they did with four straightbaskets thanks to Sean Hegarty under the boards. Greatrebounding from Sam Gaynor and fast breaks from JohnO’Malley kept the team within touching distance of Eanna, but unfortunately they were too strong. Final score 36 - 25.

The next game against Templeogue was filled withtrepidation. The boys were looking forward to working hardafter a series of tough training sessions but Templeogue’sreputation preceded them. Once again, the first quarterwas a difficult one for Moyler but with great shooting fromTony Igharo and Ben Rafter, Moyler kept their heads andplayed great defence, but it was not to be Moyler’s day andthe boys were disappointed to lose.

The game against Oatlands at the beginning of Februarywas one of the most closely contested matches for thesecond years. In this game Sinclair really came into hisown, rebounding well and scoring his first competitivebasket for Moyler. Excellent scoring from Ben and blockingfrom Sean Hegarty kept Moyler close throughout. Eagerdefending however, meant that John O’Malley got fouledout of the game. Despite a valiant effort the second years,

lost by a small margin of four points.

As true sportsmen, having suffered in the first three matchesthe optimism and team spirit of the second years neverwavered and they entered their fourth match againstColaiste Chiarain with their heads high. This was to be thegame of their season. It was a tight and tense affairhampered by the injury to Sean Hegarty. It was a greatdefensive game by all, especially Ade, Ryan Hickey andLennon Lambert and one where the true spirit of the teamshone through. Supporting each other and keeping theirheads until the final whistle was an inspiration to theircoaches but a heartbreaking loss for the boys who trulydeserved the win.

Colaiste Padraig were their next opposition, where Craigand Patrick showed their determination to do well for theteam with strong defense. Despite a very strong start fromSinclair and Sean, Moyler didn’t capitalise on this and theyweren’t to be successful. Regardless, the boys qualified forthe second year plate semi-final to play St. Aiden’s CBS.This was one of the games of the season for the lads, andit was obvious to see how far they had come since thebeginning of the year as a team. An outstanding gamefrom Mohammed in defense and some great scoring fromBen and Sean mean that it was tight throughout, but withJohn and Tony on four fouls each, they had to bedisciplined and despite and excellent performance they lost27-23. Despite a disappointing year for the boys, it still wasan enjoyable one, where the second years were theembodiment of Marist ethos, with their presence and hardwork on the court.

There was a lot of new faces in our Under 16 panel thatarrived to training in the early days of September. They hadto build on their skills from second year if they were to becompetitive in the A league. However, it would be achallenging year for them.

Their first match was against the Division “A” stalwarts,Templeogue. This was to give us a clear idea of the veryhigh standard that was expected of us. After adisheartening start, we regrouped for our match againstOatlands. It was a slow start for our lads and our game lostits intensity. However, with the introduction of Logan Quinnthe tempo changed. Some extraordinary shooting turnedthe game in our favour and we squeezed out a 45-42victory. A result that was extra sweet on Logan’s birthday.

Fresh from our victory, we took on Colaiste Chiarán. Thelads’ skills were developing but they weren’t enough to dealwith the superior strength of the opposition. They took onColaiste Eanna in their next fixture. The combined work ofSean Langan and Lyle Kridichart was enough keep it us intouch and in the third quarter we were level. However, theMoyler boys were not able to capitalise against the strongerteam and Eanna took the win.

As we came to the final matches of the pool, Moyler took onColaiste Padraig. We were very strong under the boardswith great rebounding from Colm O’Shea and Adam

Djellabi. However, despite Sean Langan clocking up apersonal score of 33 points, the Colaiste Padraig lads werejust far too strong.

The final match of the pool put our lads up against PresBray. We were hoping to finish on a high note butunfortunately our opponents had other ideas. We found itdifficult to gain momentum in the match and Pres Bray kepta comfortable lead until the end.

However, despite the result, we were still into the Platecompetition. Our opponents in the semi final were to beour earlier rivals– Oatlands. We had narrowly defeatedthem earlier in the season so we were expecting achallenge. It was a tit for tat match with both teams. evenlymatched. With 22 seconds remaining on the clock and withMoyler 2 points up, we needed some inspiration. This camein the form of Sean Langan’s creative tactic of simplyrunning away from the opposition to keep the ball in ourpossession. Victory was ours when the whistle blew. Wewere through to the Plate Final.

As the lads took to the court in the Oblates against PresBray, we knew we had a big challenge ahead of us. Ourlads made played a strong team game from the outset. However, Pres Bray was just too strong. Even with theseasonal support of our Under 19’s from the stands, it wastoo much of an ask and we finished the runners up.

The Under 19 basketball season started with amuch changed team following last year’sgraduation. Training began early in September sothat the new look team had a chance to gel. Ourseason tipped off against Templeogue in the Arenawhere the lads got a chance to see what they aremade of. It was an intense start to the season butthe lads met the challenge. They fought hardthroughout the match but their lack of game timetogether showed. Templeogue ran out the winnersbut it was obvious that there was huge potential inthis squad - more training and game time wouldrelease it.

Their hard work paid off with the next matchagainst Oatlands. Whilst there were some simpleerrors in this first game, their superb zone defenceand their strong teamwork, saw them start theseason with a victory.

This was followed up by another very strong teamperformance against Colaiste Chiarán which sawToms. Ludbarzs and Neil Kavanagh rack up thescores. We were off to a superb start. As the

season progressed, we chalked up another victoryagainst Colaiste Eanna. The depth of our panelbecame obvious as we were able to constantlyrotate our 12 man team.

That depth and strength was needed when wecame up against our near neighbours in ColaistePadraig. The lads had to dig deep to grind out awin and were helped by Emmanuel Adeleye’s andBartosz Guszul’s superb rebounding under theboards. As Toms. clocked up 24 points in thematch, we were in a very strong position as we hitthe half point mark of the pool.

Our next challenge was St. Andrew’s ofBooterstown. Our team was depleted throughholidays and even though Jerry Olusegun andKevin Anyanwu picked up knocks, we were still verymuch up for the challenge. Addam Reyes had anamazing defensive game that helped to put usahead and take the win.

Our last opposition in the pool was against PresBray. We were already through to the knock-out

Page 58: Moyle Park Yearbook 2017 LR1 · 2017. 9. 28. · Moyle Park College Yearbook 2017 3 Publication of the Yearbook as always marks the end of the school year. This year 2016/2017 we

stages of the league but this would determine whoour opposition would be. We started slowly as wewere rusty following the break over the midtermand it was a tit for tat game for the first quarter. Asthe match progressed we began to stretch our lead.Great shooting from Addam Reyes and J.JMazingu and strong driving from Kevin Anyanwuand Neil Kavanagh say us run out 68-55 winners. Our early loss in the season say us progress to thenext round to face St. Aiden’s of Whitehall.

We knew we had our work cut out for us against St.Aiden’s. As previous All-Ireland winners, they werethe definite favourites for the spot in the CountySemi Final. However, they were not going to godown without a fight. We started well with Toms.Ludbarzs taking advantage of the fast break but itwas soon obvious that we were out classed.Despite our best efforts, we were not able toovercome the stronger opposition as St. Aiden’s ranout the winners.

We were not going to have a place in the CountyFinal but we were not out of the competition. Wefaced Malahide in a third/fourth place playoff. Itwas a crucial match that would see the winner gostraight to the All-Ireland Playoffs and the loserwould have to play in the qualifier round. It was atough game from the start and some of Moyler’skey players were in foul trouble early on. Theyfought tooth and nail throughout the match and itwas anyone’s game right down to the final whistlebut Malahide were the victors with a final score of57-52.

However, we still had another chance to get to theAll-Ireland. Moyle Park hosted the Qualifier roundthat was to include Virginia Cavan, Letterkenny andMoyler in a round robin competition – with onlyone progressing at the end. As January dawnedcold and snowy, Letterkenny were forced towithdraw. That meant we were down to one ‘all toplay for match’. With Mr. Anderson stepping in as

assistant coach for the day, it was a tense affair.Moyler started well and took a strong lead from thestart. Cavan came back strong in the secondquarter and it became a very exciting game. It wasscore for score throughout third and fourth quarterbut the depth of our bench paid off in the end. Asthe clock counted down it was two final basketsfrom Kevin Anyanwu that sealed the match inMoyler’s favour. We were through to the All-Ireland Playoffs.

The Playoffs took place in Patrician College inNewbridge. The prize for one team would be aspot in the All-Ireland Semi Final. It was an earlystart for the squad with their first fixture against thehome team. The Newbridge lads were very strongplayers – particularly under the boards. Our ladsdefence found it difficult to deal with their superiorheight and strength. Newbridge ran out 50-30winners. It wasn’t the result we had hoped for butwe still had all to play for as we faced off againstKillorglan in our second and final match. Withdetermination, the lads fought for their spot in thefinal and by half time it was all to play for at 33-25. Their shooting was starting to pay off and wewere gaining our confidence – playing our game.Unfortunately, the Killorglan lads came back withforce in the final quarter. With Neil Kavanaghfouled out and Bartosz Guszul on his last legs, wefought to the end but it wasn’t enough. Our seasonwas at an end.

As we come to the end of another season we mostbid farewell to one of our stalwarts of basketball –Bartosz Guszul. Bartosz has grown from strengthto strength since the young first year who was thecentre of both our offense and defence. A truegentleman to work with – we thank him for his loyalservice over the years and wish him well in hisfuture endeavours. He has left behind a team thatwill miss his strength under the boards but they area team with huge potential and we look forward toseeing what they can achieve next year.

Our U-14 hurlers had a good year and someexcellent individual performances from the MoylePark boys. We started off with a blitz which four teamstook part, (Colaiste Pobail Setanta, St. Catherine’s,Killinarden C.S and Moyle Park). Only two teamswould advance to the knock-out stages so we knewwe had to be on our game.

Our first game was against St. Catherine’s and wecame out of the traps very fast. We beat themconvincingly and gave our boys great confidencegoing into the next game. Unfortunately we met avery strong Setanta side who brought our lads backdown to earth. It was all down to the last gameagainst Killinarden and our boys were ready. Weagain started strongly and led by a few points at halftime. Killinarden came back and lead in the second

half but a strong finish from Moyle Park meant wewould be moving onto a quarter final. Some excellentperformances from Harry Kelly, Pierce Mcdonald,Craig Reilly and Brian Kirwan were on view that day.

The quarter final was against Old Bawn C.S. on asunny afternoon in Tallaght. We started brightly againand scored a superb goal inside the first minute. Afine clearance from Harry Kelly went all the way intothe full forward line where Senan Walsh picked up theball, beat his marker and smashed the ball to the net.Unfortunately that’s where it ended as a very strongOld Bawn side took over and won the gameconvincingly. Best on the day were Matthew O’Mara,Senan Walsh, Ben Russel and Sean McNabb.

The past few years has seen the return of hurling toMoyle Park College. It started off with just an under14 team but now sees the school represented atunder 14, under 16 & for the first time in quite anumber of years, a senior team.

The groundwork done by parents & mentors of thelocal club Round Towers has fed into the Moyle Parkhurlers increasing the bond between our school andthe local community.

The encouragement & support given by parents isvery much appreciated.

Training started this year in September, continuing onfrom the back of an encouraging under 14 campaignlast year. Our young under 16 team competed thisyear in a very tough division. The first game of theseason, saw us play at home to a strong Old BawnCollege team. Despite our best efforts we werebeaten in a high scoring game. The next game sawus play away to St. Kevins College, winning on acomprehensive scoreline of 5-16 to 3-4. The finalgame of the year was away to St. Marks College.

Both teams. had to win to qualify to the next round. All players put in a huge performance butunfortunately we were defeated in the final fewminutes of the game.

To field a senior team is an indication of the growthof hurling in Moyle Park College. Our seniorsunfortunately were beaten by Firhouse CommunityCollege on a high scoring game of 2-14 to 4-11

The under 14's are currently awaiting the start of theirchampionship. We wish them all the best in theircampaign.

In the past two years quite a number of students haverepresented Moyle Park College & Clondalkin withthe Dublin South Colleges, winning two Leinsterchampionships.

With the current bunch of players already in theschool, and no doubt with the addition of more tojoin us in the future, hurling looks set to stay inMoyler........So ar aghaidh linn!!

Rugbyby Mr. Finegan

Rugby made its long awaited return to Moyle Park in2016. It is a little known fact that Clondalkin RFC hadinitially used the grounds of Moyle Park College, withthanks to the Marist brothers, to play their homegames before moving to their current grounds inGordon Park, Kingswood in 1977.

Moyle Park can count an Irish international amongstits alumni; John Sexton (not to be confused with hisnamesake and current Irish outhalf- Johnny Sexton)caught the rugby bug whilst attending Moyle Parkand went on to win four full Irish caps during the1980’s.

The sight of the oval ball has once again become aneveryday feature of life in Moyle Park. 2016 saw theestablishment of a squad of over forty rugby playersin the school across all the year groups, with many ofthose students taking part in rugby for the very firsttime. A series of blitz tournaments and challengematches followed and the progress made by thesquad was quick and dramatic.

The senior squad had a particularly productiveseason this year. The squad took part in a rugby blitz

in Barnhall RFC early in the season with victoriesagainst Adamstown Community College andCelbridge Community College seeing Moyle ParkCollege crowned champions. Following on from thatsuccess the team took part in a challenge match withAdamstown CC, with whom a healthy rivalry isbeginning to develop. Although the team lost outagainst Adamstown there were clear signs ofdevelopment and expectations were on the rise.Moyle Park’s season reached its climax in February asthey took to the field in De La Salle RFC in the LeinsterDevelopment Cup. The Cup itself ended indisappointment for Moyle Park as they exited thetournament in the group stages but the obviousimprovement in the standard and style of play did notgo unnoticed by those in Leinster Rugby, whoextended an invite to take part in division 3A of theLeinster Schools League and Cup next year.

Moyle Park’s involvement in the Leinster SchoolsLeague and Cup will be a defining moment in theschool’s rugby development. Should the team holdit’s own against more experienced opposition, thefuture of rugby in Moyle Park will look very brightindeed.

It has been another fine year for athletics at MoylePark College with students competing across a rangeof disciplines from cross-country to track and field. The year got off to a great start in Lucan when LouisO’Loughlin won cross-country gold. This event alsogave a number of first years their first taste of thesport and they have been dedicated members of theteam ever since.

The next cross-country race was held in CastleknockCollege where Toke Olufowobi finished a highlyimpressive 7th in his first ever race. The West Leinstersin Phoenix Park is always the main event of the crosscountry season and, as usual, Moyle Park brought alarge team. With reining all-Ireland champ LouisO’Loughlin side-lined our chances of a medal weredented but we did have fine performances fromKeenan McDonnell and Osamu Hazel. James Rogerssummoned his inner Bear Grylls when he built a gearbag igloo to provide shelter against the freezing windwhich was making life extremely difficult for all therunners.

When the track and field season rolled around inApril the weather had improved and the sprinterswere back in training. With Louis still frustrated by anankle injury, our main medal hope was last year’sminor 80 metre champion John Ojewumi. Yet againJohn delivered, taking gold in almost nonchalantfashion. As this article goes to print, John is preparingfor the Leinster 100 metre final. There is no doubt butJohn has the talent to reach an All-Ireland final andconfirm his status as a top class sprinter. Otherstandout performers during the track and field eventwere Oge Ekeziem, who was unlucky not to qualifyfor a final, and Morgan Carroll who competed inboth the 80 metres and 1200 metres on the sameday.

Looking to the future, the athletics team is alwaysaspiring to grow and uncover the hidden talents thatundoubtedly exist amongst our students. Newmembers are always welcome.

Pink Dayby Ms. Lacey

Real Men Wear Pink!Over 700 boys all wearing pink in the same

building on the same day? Unthinkable! And

yet that is exactly what we in Moyle Park

College do every year to raise funds for

charity on Pink Day.

Pink Day is a long standing tradition in Moyle ParkCollege with fundraising efforts in previous yearsgoing to very worthwhile charities such as The IrishBreast Cancer Society and Aoibheann’s Pink Tie.The cause for this year’s Pink Day however wasdifferent and held a special place in the hearts ofthe Clondalkin community as the Pink Day Teamdecided to dedicate the day to a young local girl,Emily Duffy, who is currently battlingneuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. As such the Pink Day team comprised of twelve TYand two first year students, along with Ms. Lacey, decided that this year Pink Day was going to bebigger and better than ever before! We setourselves a target of raising €1000 for PrincessEmily but could not have imagined the success thatwas to come.

The team put in a mammoth amount of work in thelead up to the day, promoting the event by

contacting various media outlets, setting up socialmedia pages and putting posters up around theschool; organising spot prizes for the best dressedcompetition; contacting Bank of Ireland andNewlands Garden Centre to set up fundraisingstands; organising guest speakers and judges;building a “Dunk the Teacher” stocks and bakingan array of treats, not to mention transforming Ms.Cunningham’s room into pink perfection!

The day arrived before we knew it and there wereso many activities to organise such as a visit fromsocial media guru James Kavanagh and Spin 1038,a crepe and waffle sale, a raffle, and a best-dressedcompetition judged by Olympic gold medalistMichael Carruth and award winning photographerChristian Tierney where students and staff alikebattled it out to be crowned the pinkest of them all.The title was rightfully awarded for the third year ina row to Eoin Maguire in 5th year who went aboveand beyond with his Barbie Doll costume! Makingsure she wasn’t outdone was Ms. Ellis who inwinning the teacher competition gave a very fittingperformance as a pink crayon for the day!

The highlight of the day however was undoubtedlythe “Dunk The Teacher” event where Mr. Anderson,Mr. Connolly, Mr. Smith and Mr. O’Dowd all fellvictim to the wet sponges of their merciless students.Nearly the whole school showed up to watch theevent and it was one of the biggest earners of theday so thank you very much to each of the bravewarriors who dared to get into the stocks.

Theend of the day came before we knew what hadhappened and yet we still had not all of the moneycounted. Our final total came in at 4.45pm that

evening and we were thrilled to say that wesmashed our target by raising €2535 for Emily andher family.

The money will be donated to Emily and her familyon the TY Graduation Night where the team willalso present Emily with her special poem and apresent of a fairy door from the Pink DayCommittee.
