The project, which is MP learns of Fuel for School campaign from school pupils running in Chilton, Cleves Cross, Dean Bank and Ferryhill Station primary schools, looks at sustaina- bility and surplus food that supermarkets throw away. The project will be the first of its kind in the North East and it gets the children involved in under- standing and campaigning to reduce surplus food and explaining how everyone can better look after our planet. The schools are working together to raise aware- ness about the difference between ‘best before’ dates and ‘use by’ dates and to encourage house- holds to reduce food waste by checking the fridge and cupboards before buying. It is also about the per- fectly fine food that super - markets throw out because of incorrect weights and measures, promotion cam- paigns coming to an end and damaged wrapping. Refuse CIC, Durham’s branch of the Real Junk Food Project (see https:// refusedurham.org.uk for more details) deliver trays of food from supermarkets each week to the schools. The exciting part of the project for the children is they also run their own market stall at the end of the day which will swap food items on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. Blake with Cllr Kellett and his parents Victoria Duke and David Stephenson after receiv-ing his award.

Blake becomes youngest recipient of Chairman’s Medal

A nine-year-old who saved another boy from drowning has become the youngest ever recipient of the Chairman’s Medal, the highest honour in County Durham. Blake Stephenson pulled the French boy from the bottom of a swimming pool and dragged him to the side for help while on holiday in the summer. His mum and another member of the public then performed CPR until emer-gency services arrived and although the boy was placed in a medically-induced coma, he later made a full recovery.Blake was presented with the medal at Kirk Mer-rington Primary School by the Chairman of Durham County Council, Cllr Bill Kellett, Schools Aquatic Development Manager David Bullen, a repre-sentative from the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and his headteacher Nicola Murray.

The humble lifesaver becomes the youngest ever recipient of the medal, fol-lowing Olympic gymnast Amy Tinkler who received the award last year. Blake also received a Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Commendation and 125th anniversary badge. Following the ceremony, Blake said: “I feel very excited – I didn’t think I would get an award and I didn’t realise how special they are.

“A lot of people have come to see me, my sister is very grumpy that I’m getting all of this attention!”Cllr Kellett said: “Blake’s quick-thinking and heroic actions saved a young person’s life and highlight the importance of learning vital lifesaving skills and how to act in an emer-gency.“I am delighted to be able to present him with this medal, one of our most prestigious civic honours.”

Now from your lofty tower on high

You come down to earth to wither and die

You spread your carpet far and wide

Many things afoot you cover and hide

Some of you remain static

Some blow to and fro

But you are a curse wherever you go

Eventually you will disappear involuntary or

not

But once again you will return in season to

your rightful place

To display your finery with poise and grace

In your lofty grandeur, gracefully rustling

Moving at ease

At one it would seem in a gentle breeze

Last year’s Future Business Magnate winners from FBEC take to the stage to share their experiences of the competition with this year’s county-wide competitors.

FBEC looking to retain Future Business Magnates title

Thursday 2nd November saw the launch of the Future Business Magnates competition for 2018; a county-wide event that encourages young people to think like entrepreneurs.FBEC was well represented at the launch with teams old and new. The 2017-18 team repre-senting the school: Maya Askwith, Kai Daniels, Tom Henderson, Brooke Hollett, Connor Nicholson, Harrry Rayner, Charlotte Scott

and Tia Taylor quickly got to grips this year’s brief: Smart County Durham. They started generating ideas on the spot and have since undertaken research to kick-start their project. Meanwhile, the reigning champions in the com-petition, FBEC’s Gemma Arrand, Eden Barrass, James Corrigan, Max Fishburn, Kaitlyn Owens and Lauren Wilson took to the stage to tell the 250 newcomers, business

people and dignitaries about their experiences of the competition. It wasn’t just people involved in the competi-tion that wanted to hear from last year’s winners though, as Radio Newcastle and Radio 5 Live presenter Charlie Charlton was at the event to speak to them too.The interview was broad-cast on Radio Newcastle’s Drive Time show on 6th November.

Chapter Ferryhill & Chilton

On a windy morning, Fer-ryhill Town Youth U12’s and Barnard Castle played a cracking match. The game started with Ferryhill playing with the wind behind and in a half of limited chances because of the weather, both teams battled the conditions.Sol proved a constant threat up front for Ferry-hill, going clean through a few times with the keeper doing really well to keep him out. Barnard Castle had a lot of corners which the Ferryhill defence dealt with very well and the sides went into the break level.

Barnard Castle took the lead straight from the second half kick off, but Ferryhill didn’t give up and battled against the wind to keep the visitors at bay. With time running out, Ferryhill broke away and the ball fell to Neil in the box who smashed it past the keeper with just two minutes to go. Barnard Castle then won a free kick on the edge of the Ferryhill box and the last kick of the game was brilliantly saved by Tyler to secure the draw. With everyone playing superbly, man of the match was awarded to Jack Wilson.

A fair result for U12’s

Town Youth Under 10’s in impressive form against StocktonOn Sunday morning, Fer-ryhill Town Youth U10's played host to a very good Stockton Rangers team at Dean Bank in what turned out to be a superb game for the home team. Prior to the game, all players and supporters held a minute’s silence which was impeccably observed. In the first half, Ferryhill played with the chilly wind in their favour but it made life difficult for both teams throughout the game. In the first ten minutes, Ferryhill had to deal with over ten corners as Stockton applied the pressure, but the defence held firm. Carlton and Noah made some fantastic intercep-tions and didn't allow Stockton many chances to get at the home goal, but when Stockton did break through, Aidan blocked and saved everything they could throw at him.The midfield trio of George, Marc and William supported the defence superbly and also counter attacked with pace as they linked the play up.Up front Zach was in lethal form as he fired a first half hat-trick. Marc weighed in with a goal himself as Ferryhill

went on to dominate the half and take a four goal lead into the break. The second half was tough on the players, with the wind in their face and the slight incline to overcome, but although there weren't as many goals, the whole squad was involved in the performance of the season so far. Early into the half, Zach made way for Reuban who also got on the score sheet as he used his pace and determination to extend Ferryhill's lead. Addison came on for the impressive Noah and he too had an outstanding game in defence. Ferryhill continued to soak up the pressure and hit Stockton on the break.Aaron came on for the tireless Marc to good effect as he used his pace and vision to set Reuban away on more foraging runs.Jamie replaced George who had run himself into the ground for the team and Jamie was soon using his skill and trickery to retain the ball then spring an attack for Ferryhill as they held on to a convinc-ing 5-0 victory. Aidan was given man of the match and deservedly so, but all 11 players contrib-uted to a great display.

In the second game, Marc started in goal followed by Zach in the second half.Addison and Samantha con-tinued their great form as they did everything they could to keep the Stockton attack out. Various combinations of players in midfield and attack for Ferryhill worked well as everyone once again played brilliantly. Jamie came close to opening the scoring, but for some good saves from the Stockton keeper. Reuban and Aaron contin-ued to be a threat up front using pace and skill to go through on goal with Aaron finishing well to put the home team one nil up - a lead they took with them into the half time interval. The play continued back and forth in the second half and some really entertain-ing football was produced by both teams as they enjoyed the game, which was played in good spirits. Stockton notched an early equaliser and went on to score a winner later in the game, but overall they were two great games of football played in cold and blustery conditions. Sam was awarded player of the match as she put in her best performance yet in a Ferryhill shirt.

Ferryhill Celtic were at home to league leaders, Pelton ROAB WMC on Sunday, 12th November, but the visitors proved too strong for their hosts. Celtic started the game well, creating several chances, but their failure to convert would prove their undoing as Pelton broke the deadlock after 15 minutes with a chip over Kris Carr in the Celtic goal. The second half began in similar vein, but Pelton applied the pressure and

scored another three goals. It was a salutory lesson in finishing for Celtic as the visitors scored with all four shots they had on target in the game.Next up is the Ferryhill derby with Celtic visiting Dynamos on Sunday 19th, kicking off at 10:30am.And the sides will soon be facing each other again after being drawn together in the First Round of the Heart Foundation Cup, due to take place on Sunday 17th December.
