    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. The Applicant is advised to be present at the specified venue at least 15 minutes before the commencement ofthe Examinations.

    MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMMES (AFFILIATED COLLEGES)

    REGULATIONS

    (Effective from the Academic year 2009-2010)1. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) Degree Programme is offered by many departments of the University /

    affiliated Colleges.

    2. The minimum duration for completion of M.Phil. in a discipline is two semesters and the maximum

    duration is four semesters.

    3. The M.Phil. Degree is awarded if a student has

    Registered, undergone and secured the required minimum number of credits for the core and elective

    courses including Dissertation specified in the corresponding programme within the stipulated time; Secured the required attendance;

    No dues to the University, Hostel or Library;

    No disciplinary action pending against him/her

    4. Structure of the Programme

    The M.Phil. Programme consists of:

    Core courses which are mandatory for all students.

    Elective courses which students can choose from amongst the courses offered within the

    department or in other departments of the University / affiliated colleges or in other

    Approved Institutions.

    Dissertation (Mandatory)5. The distribution of credits will be as below:

    i. Core Courses - Minimum two courses carrying 5 credits each (10 or more credits)

    ii. Electives carrying 5 credits each - No minimum

    iii. Dissertation 21 Credits

    The total number of credits for core and electives shall be 15 consists of 2 Core courses (10 credits) plus one elective (5 Credits)

    The research topic for the dissertation may be finalized even at the beginning of the

    M.Phil Programme, so that the collection of relevant literature and research design could

    be completed in the First semester leaving the entire Second Semester for the research

    work. The course registration for dissertation shall be in the First semester and a

    separate registration form shall be used for Registration.6. Evaluation of the dissertation

    6.1 The dissertation shall be jointly valued by the supervisor and one external examiner.

    The external examiner is to be drawn from:

    i. University department or affiliated college within the city of Vellore; or

    ii. Any accredited institution of higher education and / or research within Tamilnadu.

    The viva-voce examination on the dissertation shall be jointly conducted by the

    supervisor and the external examiner. The distribution of marks shall be as under:

    20% marks for Periodical presentation (to be evaluated and awarded by the supervisor) 60% marks for the Dissertation

    20% marks for Viva-voce

    6.2 The last date for submission of Dissertation shall be 31st August every year without penalty. Those

    who do not submit the dissertation in time may be given an extension of a maximum of two months

    with a penal fee prescribed by the University (i.e.up to 31 st October). There shall be no further

    extension of time beyond this period. Any student failing to submit the dissertation within this

    period will be permitted to submit the dissertation only in the next academic year along with the

    subsequent batch of students.

    7. Regulations of M.Phil. Programme

    The rules and regulations governing course registration, attendance and discipline of students for M.Phil.

    Programme shall be the same as for the Masters Programme.

    8. Evaluation

    The process of evaluation, examination, grading, etc for the M.Phil. programme shall be the same as for

    Masters programme except for the dissertation; However, Final semester students of the M.Phil. should

    be allowed to appear for examinations in any arrear papers in the month of September / October each

    year.

    9. Discipline

    Each student is required to observe discipline and decorous behavior both inside and

    outside the campus and should not indulge in any activity which will tend to bring

    down the prestige of the University.

    Ragging is unlawful and will be viewed very seriously. The registration done by ragging

    students will be automatically cancelled.

    Ph.D, admission is made during 4(four) sessions in a year [i.e. July, October, January and April] and the

    candidates should submit their applications on or before the first week of the respective session.

    For Ph.D programme the candidates can obtain the application form and prospectus from the

    Registrars office on production of DD for Rs.500/- drawn in favour of The Registrar, Thiruvalluvar University

    payable at Vellore.

    Candidates who require the application through post should include an additional amount of Rs.50/-

    towards postage in addition to the cost of application (ie. Rs. 550/-). Application forms alone can be

    downloaded from the university website. Application will be issued one month only before each session.

    For M.Phil programme application form and instructions to candidate can be downloaded from the

    University Website, and the cost of application is Rs.200/- (For SC/ST Rs.100/-) in the form of Demand Draft.

    The application cost should be enclosed with the application during submission.

    In the case of M.Phil Courses in the affiliated colleges, the filled in application should be sent directly

    to the Principal of the College concerned (with the DD of Rs.200/-) and not to The Registrar, Thiruvalluvar

    University. In the case of M.Phil Courses in the University Departments, the filled-in applications should be

    sent directly to The Registrar Thiruvalluvar University, Serkkadu, Vellore 632 106.

    Admission will be made on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in the qualifyingexamination and marks secured in the entrance test. Candidates should take the ENTRANCE TEST conducted

    by the Affiliated Colleges / University Departments where the candidate proposes to undergo M.A, M.Sc /

    M.Phil / Ph.D. Courses. Candidates appeared for final examinations in April / May, 2011 can also apply for all

    the Programmes.

    The University reserves the right either to run or cancel the courses offered by the University

    Department, without any intimation.

    Last Date for submission of filled-in applications for the M.Phil course [except Ph.D] is 30.08.2011.
