Comments about the film and Mr. Bean

Many people say that it is an excellent and extremely funny comedy. However, they are sorry that it is supposed to be the last film of the Mr. Bean series.

GOOD BYE, MR. BEAN?

Why is Mr. Bean so funny?

Page 3: Mr Bean

Why people burst out laughing when they see him?

Spectators give different answers. There are several opinions:

1. Mr. Bean puts on faces.

2. Mr. Bean does stupid things.

3. Mr. Bean does nasty things.

4. Mr. Bean invents funny things.

5. Mr. Bean gets into funny situations.

Apparently, Mr. Bean does all those things, but that is not the point. He looks like an Englishman. He is dressed like an Englishman. He speaks English. He lives in England. But he does not behave like an Englishman.

That unexpected mismatch has a comical effect.

A stereotypical Englishman is well-bred and very reserved. He always wears his “stiff upper lip” and is definitely NOT supposed to show ANY emotions. Mr. Bean shows plenty of them! More, he emphasizes every bit of emotion to extreme exaggeration. He displays them bright, loud and clear. On top of that, he demonstrates every weakness, which everybody has. Normally, each of us can fight those negative features back, and control them. But not Mr. Bean! He always follows them: greed, envy, selfishness, cheating, irresponsibility, whatever. He does what each of us thinks is worth doing (somewhere there in the deep, dark and filthy bottom of our souls, well cleaned up sometime between the junior and high school) but does not dare to let those little monsters out of control. Mr. Bean behaves like a naughty schoolboy. Of course we laugh!
