GENERAL DEFINITIONS

ADDICTION STAGES
Stage 1- experimentation Stage 2- regular use Stage 3- daily preoccupation Stage 4- dependency*
*don’t think only people who are down & out are capable of becoming addicted.
*addiction can happen in as little as 6 months.
ALCOHOL
Alcohol= a drug that is produced by a chemical reaction in fruits, vegetables, &
grains.
HANGOVERS
Hangover= physical symptoms that follow an episode of drinking (thirst, nausea, headache, diarrhea, sensitivity to light and noise).
SHORT TERM EFFECTS
Mucosal lining, tongue, gums, & throat- chemicals affect
Stomach- 20% goes. Too much= intoxicated
Small intestine- swallowed 80% to small intestine where it enters blood stream more slowly.
Heart- beats faster, blood vessels widen, & body temperature rises.
SHORT TERM EFFECTS
Brain- becomes less able to control the body (movement, speech, & vision)
Liver- changes alcohol to water. When you drink faster than the liver can break it down= intoxicated (DRUNK)
Lungs- CO2 released from here leads to increased urine, sweating, & bad breath

Drugs= substances that change the structure/function of the body/mind.
Medicines= drugs that are used to prevent or cure diseases or other conditions.
TYPES OF MEDICINE
Vaccines- medicines to prevent diseases
Antibiotics-medicines that fight germs
Prescriptions & Over the Counter (OTC)
- medicines that provide pain relief
DRUG CLASSIFICATIONS
Stimulants- drugs that speed up the body’s functions.
Depressants- drugs that slow down the body’s functions.
Narcotics- drugs that are used to relieve pain.
Hallucinogens- drugs that make people “hallucinate,” a.k.a. mind altering drugs.
DRUG CLASSIFICATIONS
Steroids- drugs made from hormones.
Inhalants- everyday products that are sniffed or snorted to obtain a high.
Club (Designer) Drugs-These are man made drugs that are a changed form of a controlled drug. These designer drugs do not follow the laws for controlled drugs. No quality control!

Why they can be popular:easy to get, can be legal if they’re for
someone. Dangerous because:prescribed for someone else’s age,
weight, body size, medical history, etc.
Examples:pain killers, ADD or ADHD meds.
STIMULANTS
Why they can be popular:provides energy, and a feeling of well-
being. Dangerous because:can lead to heart attack or increased
blood pressure, Examples:caffeine, crack, heroin, & cocaine
METHAMPHETAMINE
Why they can be popular:cheaper than cocaine, Dangerous because:highly addictive, combines stimulants,
narcotics, & hallucinogens, causes: meth mouth, people to lie, cheat, & steal to get more.
Examples:methamphetamine (meth), crystal

OPIATES
Why they can be popular:feel instant pleasure and less pain. Dangerous because:highly addictive, this combined with
alcohol is most common two-drug combo that leads to death.
Examples:cocaine, heroin, morphine, codeine
HALLUCINOGENS
Why it’s popular:come in pill form, doesn’t lead to
increased energy. Dangerous because:cause hallucinations which could lead
to harming yourself or others. Examples:LSD (acid), PCP, MDMA (ecstasy),
mushrooms
STEROIDS
Why it’s popular:not taken for a “high,” some think it’s
their only option. Dangerous because:“roid rage,” mood swings, deepening
of the voice, fat knuckles, decrease in testes’ size

INHALANTS
Why they can be popular:easy to get Dangerous because:kills brain cells that will never come
back, freezes brain activity. Examples:household cleaners, spray paint, etc.
CLUB DRUGS
Why they can be popular:no alcohol included, can look like candy Dangerous because:raves= dangerous people, increases
sexual drive, can lead to sex and STIs, dehydrates the body, body temperature rises, eyes are fascinated on lights.
