OUR VALUES EDUCATION

The Importance of Value Education Education is a methodical effort towards learn-ing basic facts about humanity. And the core idea behind value education is to cultivate es-sential values in the students so that the civilisa-tion that teaches us to manage complexities can be sustained and further developed. It begins at home and it is continued in schools. Everyone accepts certain things in his/her life through various mediums like society or government.

Value education is important to help everyone in improving the value system that he/she holds and put them to use. Once we understand our values in life, we can examine and control the various choices we make in our lives. It's our duty to uphold the various types of values in life such as cultural values, universal values, personal values and social values.

Thus, value education is always essential to shape a student's life and to give him an oppor-tunity of performing himself on the global stage. The need for value education among the parents, children, teachers is constantly increas-ing as we continue to witness increasing violent activities, behavioural disorder and lack of unity in society. (Kerala Education, 2011)

We have 8 Core values at Oatley West Public School which we encourage our students, teach-ers and parents to live by.

Our eight Values are: · Respect · Responsibility · Cooperation · Care · Fairness · Integrity · Excellence · Participation

A value is chosen each week for the whole school and this value is published in the newsletter for you to reinforce at home. Values that are taught in the classroom to help our students :

Develop a love of learning

Pursue excellence and high standards

Develop care and respect for themselves and others

Take pride in their work Exhibit a strong sense of fairness and social

justice Have respect for and understanding of Aus-

tralia's history including the cultures and ex-periences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Is-lander people

Have an appreciation of Australia's history and multicultural society

Actively participate as citizens.

All students are expected to : Attend school every day, unless they are legal-

ly excused Be in class on time and prepared to learn Maintain a neat appearance and follow the

school uniform policy Behave safely, considerately and responsibly

including when travelling to and from school Follow class rules, speak courteously and co-

operate with instructions and learning activi-ties

Treat staff, other students and members of the school community with dignity and re-spect

Care for property belonging to themselves, the school and others.

Being a new school year, the following link will take you directly to the School Handbook, or may I direct you to the School Website which should answer questions you may have about school procedures:

Please be assured staff are vigilant, and monitor-ing for health issues across the school as well as keeping an eye on our kids wellbeing in regards to their perception of bushfires and storm damage. This is especially important as news reports and graphics can be quite confronting.

ORGANIC DIGGERS REPORT

V A L U E F O R T H E W E E K R E SP E C T Be polite, cooperative and sensible. Treat people as you would like to be treated. Accept and celebrate our differences.

Welcome back to the Organic Diggers for 2020. Many thanks to community members for their support at last December's working bee, we have far less of a task getting the garden ready for 2020 due to our labours! Special thanks to the Schofield family for running general maintenance on the garden during the holidays. The cover crop of Barley which we planted in the produce beds has been a massive success, with minimal weed infiltration into the grow space. This crop will be chopped and turned back into the soil to provide a nitrogen boost, preparing the beds for Autumn crops. A Saturday working bee is planned over the next few weeks, stay tuned for the announcement and note in next week's newsletter. The Organic Dig-gers Club will resume regular activities once the working bee has taken place. Happy gardening! Mr Burr - Organic Diggers co-ordinator

Whooping cough (pertussis)

In recent months there has been an increase in the number of school-aged children in NSW diagnosed with whooping cough (pertussis). Please be on the look out for symptoms of whooping cough: a runny nose, followed by a cough, which becomes worse (older children and adults may

have only a cough that can last for several months) a cough that occurs in spasms, which may be followed by vomiting a cough with a 'whoop' (a sudden noisy gasp at the end of coughing). In order to prevent further cases, if your child or any member of your family has symptoms of whooping cough please see your doctor and take this notice with you. This is extremely important if there is a baby less than 12 months of age living in the household. Whooping cough can be a serious life-threatening infection for babies. If your doctor diagnoses whooping cough in its early, infectious stage (within 3 weeks of the cough starting), please advise the school and keep your child at home until they have taken 5 days of antibiotics. Immunisation reduces the risk of infection, however the vaccine does not give lifelong protection, and reinfection can occur. The vaccine is provided free of charge for infants at 2, 4 and 6 months and again at 4 years. Please check that your child has received this primary course. If your child has not been fully immunised, discuss a catch-up plan with your doctor. Because protection wanes with time, free vaccine will be provided to Year 10 students as part of the NSW School-based Vaccination Program from 2009.

Information on whooping cough is available at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/factsheets/infectious/pertussis.html.
