Let’s Travel! Travel ProjectDo you remember your travel project task from Math 11? You can either choose to build on your existing itinerary and destination OR create a whole new trip to a different location. In this project, you will be creating a travel plan: focusing on the transportation you will need once you arrive at your destination, the activities and tours you will participate in, and reading maps to be able to navigate. You will be using some of the skills you learned in Math 11, as well as learning new ones.Your Task:

1. Destination: Select a destination of your choice: Your travel is limited to

locations within the Western Hemisphere. Trip date: During the Easter holiday so you will not miss school. Budget: Will not exceed $3000.00 per person. Plan how you will present your travel itinerary and choices. Consider all parts of the trip using the outline of activities as

listed below.

Travel Considerations:

2. Getting around: What type of transportation will you use once you are at your destination?

3. Location: Where is your accommodation? How far is it from the things you want to see and do?

4. Cultural Activities: What are you interested in seeing and doing while you are on your holiday? How much will they cost?

14. 1 DestinationBriefly outline the choice you made for your travel destination. This information will be important for your class presentation. You may re-use your information from Math 11 or create a new travel destination if you would like to explore another destination.

Describe:

Where are you going? In which country is it located?

o Find a map that describes where you are going. Where is it in relation to where we live? Give the direction (N, E, S, W) and the number of kilometers it is from here.

Why did you choose this destination?

Dates of travel?

o You are travelling during our Easter Vacation. Is Easter a holiday where you are travelling to?

Were there any factors that played into your decision on where and when to go? Explain.

Example:

Throughout this unit, you will see example boxes showing planning for a trip to Kaua’i, one of the Hawaiian Islands. For this holiday, here is a map of the island:

Figure 1 from http://www.aaccessmaps.com/show/map/us/hi/kauai

This destination was chosen because it is supposed to be “the most beautiful place on Earth.” The weather is always warm, and there are lots of things to do and see, without being as crowded as the other Hawaiian Islands. Easter is a holiday in Kauai, because it is part of the United States of America.

The flight for this example leaves the day before Easter holidays, and returns on the Monday afterwards. This will mean the traveller would need to miss 2 days of school. Changing the travel dates has saved approximately $400 in air fare.

Travel to Kaua’i is by air and it is 3010 miles (4844 km) south west of Canada across the Pacific Ocean.

The cost of the flight is $910.89/person, including taxes & additional fees.

Where to Stay?Choose a place to stay at your destination. Where is it located? How much does it cost? Describe this accommodation and be sure to list its features.

Example:

The hotel chosen for our trip to Kaua’i is the Aston Islander on the Beach in Kapa’a, which is on the East Coast of Kaua’i.

It costs $111 per night including all taxes and fees. http://www.astonislander.com/

I chose this hotel because: Its score is 8.1/10 on Booking.com It is on the beach and has an oceanfront pool and hot tub, tennis

court, and golf course nearby. There is free parking available. It is located in Kapa’a, which is the shopping centre of Kauai. There is free wifi, refrigerator and microwave. There is a free continental breakfast.

14.2 Cultural Activities – What to See and Do There are so many things to do while on vacation!

Use the table below to outline 5 options for activities. Make sure all activities are school appropriate. You can use the activities that you brainstormed in Math 11 OR choose new ones.

Page 9: MR. STREET'S BUDGETING ASSIGNMENT - Let’s Travel ... · Web viewChanging the travel dates has saved approximately $400 in air fare. Travel to Kaua’i is by air and it is 3010 miles

Choose at LEAST one activity and/or restaurant for each day of your holiday. For each one, note what the activity is, the cost, how many hours it will take, and what time of day it is available. Note the address of the activity as well.

14.3 Location – Where Things are LocatedIn this section of your project, you are going to be plotting your activities onto a map of your travel destination so that you can decide what your ground transportation needs are. Are the activities you are going to do close to your hotel? Far away? Preplanning your activities can help you save time and money on your vacation.

1. Find and print a map of your travel destination that would include all of the areas where your chosen activities are.

2. Plot all of your activities onto the map, including what they are and what date you are hoping to do them.

3. Create your daily itinerary: Starting and ending at your hotel, how far do you need to travel

each day? What order will you be doing your activities each day?

Create a chart for your daily itinerary:

Day Time of Day Activity Cost Location/ Distance from last activity

14.4 Getting Around – Ground TransportationIn some destinations, it is possible to walk, bus, or use the train or a taxi to get to your activities, while in other destinations you will need to rent a car. It is also possible to rent a car for part of your holiday and rely on other types of ground transportation for the rest. Travelling on busses or trains can add to your holiday experience, so it is a great idea to look into the types of transportation that are available to you on your holiday.

1. What type of public transportation (bus, train, taxi) is available at your destination?

What is the cost? Is the cost per trip or per day?

2. What is the cost of a shuttle from the airport/bus terminal to your hotel? Is this a free service provided by the hotel?

3. How much would it cost to rent a car? Would you need a GPS rental? Would you need additional insurance?

1. If you currently own and register a car, find out if a package policy would cover damages to a rental car. How much would this package policy cost?

2. Compare your package policy cost to the cost of additional insurance.

4. Fill in the following chart with rental car options:

Rental Company Type of car Costs

14

Page 15: MR. STREET'S BUDGETING ASSIGNMENT - Let’s Travel ... · Web viewChanging the travel dates has saved approximately $400 in air fare. Travel to Kaua’i is by air and it is 3010 miles

What type of ground transportation would be your best choice for your holiday? Describe your decision and your reasoning below.

15

Example:

1. There is a bus service in Kaua’I http://www.kauai.gov/Government/Departments/TransportationAgency/BusSchedules/tabid/208/Default.aspx The bus costs is $2.00 per trip, and most routes begin at 6:00 in the morning and run until 10:00 at night, passing through a bus stop about every hour.

2. There is no shuttle directly to the hotel and taking the public bus shuttle would require a bus change.

3. The trip to Kaua’i will require a car rental, as buses don’t run to the locations for the Kipu Ranch Tour or the Kalauea Lighthouse.

a. A traveller would not need to rent a GPS unit on Kaua’i, as there are many maps available.

b. Because of the package policy owned in Saskatchewan, a traveller would not need extra insurance in Kaua’i. A package policy costs approximately $15 per month, or $180 per year, while additional insurance for this one car rental is approximately $240.00 for this visit.

4. Car Rental Options in Kaua’i:

Company Type of car CostsHonk, USA Ford Focus $33.40/day; $389.06 total price

Advantage Nissan Versa

$25.50/day; $423.96 total price

Budget Ford Focus $33.43/day; $479.65 total price

- Although the daily rental rates are less at Advantage and are the same for Budget and Honk, Budget and Advantage both have lots of ‘extra’ fees that they charge on their car rentals, so Honk is the better choice for a car rental in Kaua’i.
