World demand to rise 3.8%annually through 2017
Global demand for major household
appliances is projected to grow 3.8
percent annually through 2017 to 430
million units. Growth will be predicated in
large part on increasing standards of
living in China, India, and other develop-
ing countries, making white goods
affordable to consumers. A recovery in
the housing markets in the US and
Western Europe, along with rebounding
consumer confidence levels, will also
bolster sales gains.
Developing countries toooffer most robust growth
Developing countries will offer the most
robust growth going forward. These
nations generally have lower ownershiplevels of major appliances than do more
advanced markets, which provides
ample opportunities for first time pur-
chases. Among the worlds developing
countries, India will record the fastest
growth through 2017. Indias rapid
economic growth has vastly improved
the standard of living in the country,
spurring demand for capital goods such
as major household appliances.
China will continue to experience growth
in major household appliance demand at
rates above the global average, although
advances will not be as robust as those
during the past decade due to the recent
expiration of government stimulus
incentives. Still, China will account for
over 30 percent of all additional global
product demand through 2017. Sus-tained expansion in the countrys
housing industry and strong gains in
personal income levels will boost
demand, particularly for first time pur-
chases. In addition, as Chinas installed
base for white goods increases, opportu-
nities for replacement sales will grow.
Developed markets have been adversely
affected in recent years by economic
downturns. This caused many consum-ers to postpone appliance purchases --
either to replace an existing version or to
add new equipment -- choosing to repair
used equipment when possible. Because
of this, sales growth will stem primarily
from a release of this pent up demand
through the forecast period. Rebounding
housing activity in most advancednations, particularly the US, will a
contribute to gains, as many majo
appliances are installed when a n
house is built or an existing house

ASIA/PACIFIC
India: Supply & Demand Demand for major household appliances in India reached 23.5
million units in 2012. Demand is actually quite low in per householdterms and lags most other countries as a share of GDP and fixed invest-ment. However, Indian white goods demand has been among the fastest
growing in the region for at least the last decade, a result of the countrysstrong growth in personal incomes and overall quality of life. Addition-
ally, strong gains in new housing units have also generated opportunitiesfor growth.
Despite the expected increase in demand, household penetration ofappliances is extremely small. This is because there is still a high degreeof poverty characterizing vast segments of the population. In addition,
although India is home to several large cities (e.g., New Delhi, Mum-bai), over two-thirds of the population continued to live in rural areas
in 2012, further limiting potential development of appliance markets inthe country. Unreliable electricity distribution and fairly low standardsof living in many of these rural areas work to restrain demand. On the
other hand, major household appliance demand in India is supported bythe sheer size of the country as well as by ongoing efforts to develop itsinfrastructure.
Demand for major household appliances in India is forecast to
increase at a 6.3 percent yearly rate to 31.9 million units, above theforecast regional growth. Favorable macroeconomic conditions, such asgrowth in personal consumption spending, will spur demand. Ongoing
industrialization efforts will also contribute to growth, as this will help toboost construction spending. In addition, government efforts to improvehousing conditions in rural areas through programs like the Golden Ju-
bilee Rural Housing Finance Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Adarsh GramYojana will benefit demand.
