Imagine a world where being born female does not condemn a child to a life of danger and missed opportunities. At UNICEF, we work to make that world a reality. We are committed to ensuring that all children – regardless of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background or circumstances – realize their right to a quality education. Dear Education and Gender Equality Teams:

Imagine a world in which every girl and boy has an opportunity to receive a quality education. All children would be nurtured from birth and given the skills necessary to take their place in the global community. Imagine a world where being born female does not condemn a child to a life of danger and missed opportunities. At UNICEF, we work to make that world a reality. We are committed to ensuring that all children – regardless of gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background or circumstances – realize their right to a quality education. To that end, UNICEF supports innovative programs and initiatives that focus on the world’s most excluded and vulnerable children.

Bold, innovative solutions are needed to address challenges related to education and gender equity! We know that education transforms lives and breaks the cycle of poverty that traps so many children. An educated child will make sure his/her own children receive an education. We have organized this Global Challenge on Education and Gender Equality to hear your expert thoughts about how we can best address these issues and help countries meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Four (SDG4) and/or Five (SDG5) – ensuring a quality education for all and promoting gender equality.

TASK COMPONENTS: EDUCATION & GENDER EQUALITY ACTION PLAN/INNOVATION

IDENTIFY COUNTRY

& DEFINE THE PROBLEM

Identify a country that is currently far from meeting SDG4 or SDG5.

Define the problem that your group will focus on and make it clear how this problem directly affects the country’s ability to grow and develop.

DEVELOP WORKABLE SOLUTION

Develop a workable solution that will enable this country to achieve the identified target by 2030, and in turn, serve as a model for similarly situated countries. This solution may take the form of either an action plan or innovation.

CREATE ACTION PLAN OR

INNOVATION

Create an action plan (see example ) or innovation (see example ) that either improves upon an existing program or technology or creates something unique. If you choose the innovation option, you must create a blueprint to show the judges (and possibly a prototype if you have the time).

REVIEW CRITERIA Review the criteria of a winning proposal as described on the following page to ensure you are meeting the expectations of the project.

Criteria for a Winning Proposal

OPENING “PITCH”First 30 seconds to 1 minute of

the presentation

Offers judges a brief overview of the problem, solution, and the resources your group needs to make it happen!

An effective pitch does the following:● Sets the Context: Provide a brief history and current condition of the country

to help the judges better understand the nature of the problem.● Defines the Problem: What is the specific problem to be solved? ● Proposes Solution: How will your group attempt to solve the problem? ● Identifies Potential Impact: What will be the short- and long-term impact if

your plan for solving the problem is successful? ● Makes “The Ask”: What specifically are you requesting from the judges to

make this happen (e.g. money, resources, changes to existing policy, etc.)?

See examples of what makes an effective opening pitch here, here, and here

FEASIBILITY Offers a realistic, cost-effective, improvement over what currently exists based on “best-practices” and cites evidence of success stories in the real world.

SUSTAINABILITY Offers an enduring solution that addresses the problem over both the short and long-term with a plan for maintaining support. Also considers the potential positive impact this solution may have on other areas important to the country’s success (e.g. improved access clean water, increased girls’ school attendance rates).

SUITABILITY Considers the unique cultural, economic, geographic, and political characteristics and perspectives within the identified country when designing the most appropriate and effective solution.

CREATIVE THINKINGEffectively demonstrates creativity and originality in the action plan or innovation in that the solution is an imaginative upgrade over what currently exists.

REFLECTION Evaluates and analyzes alternative solutions and explains the reasoning behind those that were either incorporated or rejected in ultimately determining the group’s final plan and shares this reflection process with the judges.

REVIEW YOUR PROPOSAL Reviews the PROBLEM SOLVER RUBRIC to make sure criteria were met.

REMEMBER, your primary purpose as presenters is to CONVINCE the judges that your action plan or innovation will achieve its intended goal. See the IMPACT RUBRIC and COMMUNICATOR RUBRIC to further inform your presentation.
