Scheduling OverviewScheduling Overview

• When scheduling their PSEO and MHS classes, students will need to be sure that they have at least 5 high school credits but no more than 8 high school credits for the year (upcoming slide will discuss how to calculate high school and college credits).

• Students may schedule for academic core classes and/or non-core classes through PSEO as long as they have a B average.

Options AvailableOptions Available

• Option-B– Receive high school and college credit– School district pays for fees, books, and

tuition

• Option-A– Receive college credit ONLY– All fees are paid for by the student

Page 8: Mrs. Breedlove (A-K) Mrs. Behm (L-Z). Program Eligibility Junior or Senior status starting Fall 2014 Lakeland- 3.0+ GPA and take/pass the Compass Test

FinanceFinance• While Option-B is paid for by the district, there are

some financial considerations to take into account:– All transportation costs are paid for by the student.

• This could include:– Personal vehicle– Parent ride– Parental permission to ride with another student – Laketran (discount provided for Lakeland students)

– Any student who fails to complete a college course, whether through a formal “class drop” process, an earned “F”, or non-attendance, are responsible for reimbursement of the tuition to the Madison Local School District.

– Any tutoring or special fees associated with classes are the responsibility of the student and family

Example: Private Tutoring

Academic CreditsAcademic Credits

• College credits are NOT the same as high school credits.

• 1 college credit= 0.2 high school credits– Example: Intro to Psychology, 3 college credits.

This course is 0.6 high school credits (3 x 0.2 = 0.6).

• This means it takes 2 college classes to meet one high school graduation requirement.– Example: At Lakeland, a student must take American

Literature (4 credits) and Composition 1 (3 credits) to equal English 11 here at Madison.

Schedule Options

• PSEO students can:– Take all of their coursework at the college

• Students must have a “B” average in all their classes• REMEMBER: In order to satisfy 1 high school credit,

you need to take 2 college courses. For example: – English 11 at MHS = American Literature + Composition 1

– Take part of their coursework at MHS and part of it at the college (blended schedule)

Things to ConsiderThings to Consider

• All Option-B classes are on a 4.0 scale. Students are unable to get weighted grades in college level classes. This may impact your ranking and GPA, because you won’t be at the high school taking weighted classes.

• Some courses required for high school graduation may not be available at the PSEO location. Therefore, you may have to forfeit your participation in the program in order to meet our graduation requirements.– Example: American Literature

• Students are required to attend their PSEO classes even if Madison is closed that day and vice versa.

Page 13: Mrs. Breedlove (A-K) Mrs. Behm (L-Z). Program Eligibility Junior or Senior status starting Fall 2014 Lakeland- 3.0+ GPA and take/pass the Compass Test

Things to Consider Cont.Things to Consider Cont.

• Many colleges are encouraging students to stay at the high school and take rigorous courses which include the honors and the AP courses in order to be well prepared for college.

– Do you have a GPA of 4.0 or higher?– Is you class rank pretty high?– Are you going into a career that includes medical, science, or

math?– After high school, are you planning on attending a small private

school with a specific/competitive program?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, we recommend that you reconsider participating in the PSEO program due to the fact that

• If you attend Option-B, the students and teachers at the college will not know that you are a high school student.

• If there are any problems, FERPA prevents the colleges from informing the parents or the high school. This increases the responsibility of the student to adhere to all family and age-related rules.
