This section will also introduce mental illnesses and how they differ from one another.

By the end you will be able to understand the difference between sadness and depression & ways in which they can be helped.

EMOTIONS Can you name a time when you felt

physcial pain? How did you react to this painful

situation? What would have happened if you could

not have felt the pain? Would it be good to never feel pain ?

Emotional pain serves the same purpose as physical pain. Unpleasant emotions help us know when we need help. Even unpleasant emotions can be healthy.

MENTAL HEALTH Perception - how you view a situation Dealing with confusing feelings in a

healthy way is a large part of mental health.

So what is your mental health???? MH = is the way people think about and

respond to events in their daily lives.

Your emotions play a large role in a your mental health status.

EMOTIONAL HEALTH EH = is the way a person experiences

and deals with feelings. Going through a wide range of emotions

is perfectly normal Even unpleasant emotions can be

healthy to experience.

Healthy emotions can help us appreciate relatiohips, success, and loss or failure.

TEENS AND EMOTIONS Even though this is a confusing time full

of physical, social , and emotional change- most teens go through healthy emotional changes.

As you grow up and get older you will be exposed to gradually increasing roles, responsibilities, and freedoms that can correlate into increasing emotional stress.

HORMONES As you go through puberty the body will

begin to produce hormones H= are chemicals that help control how

the body grows and functions. Hormones are released in to the blood

stream by the brain and other organs in the body called glands.

Mood and energy are two major features effected by this chemical release

UNDERSTANDING YOUR EMOTIONS

How do you feel physically when you are embarrassed?

Feeling only one type of emotion all the time would be irrational and unhealthy

Feeling embarrassed or unhappiness are important for us to learn from and grow.

Going through unpleasant times helps us learn and hopefully avoid future problematic situations.

EMOTIONAL SPECTRUM What is your Emotional Spectrum??? ES= a set of emotions arranged by how

pleasant they are.

The emotions will be set so that they are opposite one another on the wheel. Example – love / hate sadness / happy

RECOGNIZING YOUR EMOTIONS Understanding and recognizing your emotions is

not always easy You may feel many emotions at a single time Identifying your emotions is vital for being able to

cope with life situations. Can you give an example of feeling more than

one emotion at a time.

When a person feels fear- it may be accompanied with nerves or anxiety

This may be confusing or overwhelming, you must recognize that you are feeling a mix of strong emotions to cope and deal in a positive rational way.

TRIGGERS A way to understand your emotions is to

learn the situations that are more likely to cause specific emotions

Situations, people, and events that cause a person to feel emotions are called triggers

Not everyone reacts the same way to triggers.

Being able to avoid unpleasant times means you must understand what triggers you to react in a negative way.

COPING WITH EMOTIONS Coping with your emotions means you

must deal with them in ways that show respect for others and make you feel better.

PROJECT ONE !!!! You will be in groups of two or three You must have one boy/girl in each group Each person in the group must have at least 5

sentences to say (not words) You will be creating a skit on how emotions

play a large role in your daily lives

CREATING YOUR SKIT You will be creating a skit on how emotions and

social interaction play a large role in your daily lives

You will pick at random 2 of the emotion cards- these will be used in the skit

At the completion of the skit the students in the class should be able to guess which emotions were on your cards- this will be used as a grading tool.

The skit must be at least 3 minutes long- ( can be longer)

Please use any or all of the following in your skit triggers - body language – active listening – effective communication – healthy and unhealthy emotional expression

MENTAL ILLNESSES What is mental illness ?? Health disorder that affect a persons

behavior, thoughts, and emotions. This can be scary.

In the United States, one our of every six people has a mental illness.

These “problems” are illnesses that can most times be corrected. Most people can live normal lives once this is under control

First step is recognizing you have a problem and getting it diagnosed.

DISORDERS Anxiety – feeling of extreme

nervousness and worryMany times a person will have a panic

attack and feel as if they are having a heart attack

Anxiety Disorder = is an illness that caused unusually strong nervousness, worry, or panic.

Mood Disorders = I an illness in which people have uncontrollable mood changes.

DISORDERS Bipolar Mood Disorder (BMD)= is one kind of

mood disorder where people will go from extreme happiness to sadness. (Depression/ mania)

Depression = is a disorder that causes a mood of extreme sadness or hopelessness.

Mania = is a mood that causes excessive energy or irritation

Hallucinations= sensing something that is not real

Delusions = a false belief OCD – obsessive compulsion disorder

Panic attacks: an anxiety disorder that causes someone to have a brief period of of extreme anxiety

Panic attacks are triggered by things called phobias (fears). Common phobias include the fear of animals, situations, or social situations (speeches, meeting new people).

DISORDERS Schizophrenia = disorder in which a

person breaks from reality in several ways Normally little emotional expression is given

from a person with this disorderThey may have hallucinations or delusionsParanoia is common

Paranoia = is the belief that other people want to harm you or someone.

DEPRESSION A mood disorder in which a person feels

extremely sad and hopeless for at least two weeks.

Healthy sadness is normal and isn’t depression.

Depression is a mental illness known as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

Symptoms include: extreme sadness for no reason, inability to cheer up with good news, changes in sleeping patterns, tiredness or lack of energy, slowed or increased movements, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, feelings of guilt or hopelessness, thoughts of death and suicide.

SUICIDAL THINKING Most dangerous symptom of depression. Is the desire to take one’s own life. People are in so much emotional pain

that they feel they would be better off dead than continue to suffer.

15% of depressed people successfully commit suicide.

Treatments for depression are successfully relieve symptoms in 80% of cases.

GETTING HELP !

Talk to your friends. Ask if they need help and if anything is

wrong. Listen

activity to their

response.

If your friend has a serious problem,

suggest that he or she talk about it to parent or trusted

adult.

If your friend finds help an adult, let them know you are still there to

offer support

If your friend refuses to talk to someone who can help, try to find an appropriate person

who can help. If your friend is upset about a

small problem, just talking about the problem may help it or them to feel

better

If you think they may hurt

themselves or another person get help ASAP from an

adult

problems

Counselor - professional who helps people work

Psychologist- a person who tried to change

thoughts, feelings, and actions by finding

reasons behind them or by suggesting new

ways to manage emotions

Psychiatrist – medical doctor who specializes in

illnesses of the brain and body that affect

emotions and behavior
