ABSTRACTThe report analyzes data from a survey of Barrow High

School (Alaska) graduates (N=82 with a 51% return rate) from 1985-86through 1988-89. Findings included the following: 71 percent ofgraduates were female and 29 percent male; the largest ethnic groupwas Inupiaq (42.68%) followed by Caucasian (30.49%) andmultiple-ethnic background (15.85%); 25.61% of graduates werecurrently attending postsecondary institutions on a full- orpart-time basis; 58.54% were working in non-military occupations,3.66% were in the military, and 10.98% were unemployed; the largestemployment category was government (32.93%); postsecondary studentswere attending in-state institutions over out-of-state institutionsby a 3-to-1 margin; most students did not declare a major, but thelargest single major, business, was declared by 19.05% of students;students reported a mean grade point average of 2.88; 76.19% ofstudents attending postsecondary institutions were female and 57.14%were Caucasian; graduates rated their high-school preparation as 6.97

on a 10-point scale; and parents of the graduates had a mean of 12years of education. Extensive charts and graphs detail the findings.

The following statements are based upon the analysis of the Barrow High School GraduateStudent Survey data. Barrow High School had 161 graduates during the academic years of1985-1986 through 1988-1989, out of which 50.93% reamed the survey. For the followinganalysis, N = 82.

Their were 16 returned surveys from 1986 graduates, 15 from 1987 graduates,27 from 1988 graduates, and 24 from the 1989 graduates. Hereafter, these willbe referred to as "the graduates."

Seventy-one percent of the graduates are female and twenty-nine petrent aremale

The largest ethnic group is lnupiaq (42.68%). The next largest group isCaucasian (30.49%). The third largest group has is Multiple-ethnic background(15.85%), followed by Filipino (9.76%) and Hispanic (1.22%). No other ethnicgroups were represented.

Students currently attending post-secondary institutions on a full- or part-timebasis consisted of 25.61% of all of the graduates -- 23.17% full-time and 2.44%schoollwork combination, although 48.78% of the graduates have attended or areattending post-secondary institutions. Almost six out of ten graduates (58.54%)are worldng in non-military occupations, 1.22% declared that they werehomemakezs, 3.66% are in the military, while 10.98% are currently unemployed.

In the employment classification the largest category was government with32.93%. That group was followed by full-time, non-woridng students (23.17%),unemployed, including homemakers (12.20%), setvice industry (7.32%), airlines(6.10%), cab drivers (3.66%), and pan-time workers and restaurant workers(2.44% each). Native corporations, self-employed, mechanic/laborer, unknown,plumber, retail sales, banking, and the oil industry each employed 1.22% of thegraduates.

BHS graduates that are cunently attending post-secondary institutions, attend in-state institutions over out-of-state institutions by a 3 to 1 margin (71.4% in-state; 23.8% out-of-state; 4.8% unknown locations). The actual schools that thegraduates attend are as follows: UAF 42.9% (10.98%), UAA 14.3% (3.66),Southern Oregon State University 9.5% (2.44%), Alaska Pacific University,Arizona State University, Dominican College (California), North Slope HigherEducation Center, Other - Unknown Locations, Sheldon Jackson College, andWaldorf College (Iowa), each have 4.8% (1.22%) of the graduates.

business majors (19.05% each). Education, journalism, health fields, art,wildlife management, petroleum technology, and biology each had 4.76% ofthe graduates declared as majors.

Four BHS students attended two post-secondary institutions. Graduatesattended/have been attending the first institution for a mean of 1.1 years. Thefour that attended a second school have attended it for .88 years. No graduatesreported attending more than two schools. Not all of the graduates reportedtheir college GPA, but of those that did the mean GPA is 2.88.

Of the 1986 graduates four are currently attending school. The class of 1987has two graduates still attending, while 1988 has seven and 1989 has eight. Anexamination of the sex and ethnicity classifications shows that 76.19% of thepaduates that are still in post-secondary institutions are female and 23.81% aremale. Of the 21 students that are still in school, 57.14% are Caucasian(14.63% of all 82 respondents), 19.05% are lnupiaq (4.88% of total), Multi-ethnic background 14.29% (3.66% of total), and Filipino 9.52% (2.44% of thetotal respondents).

BHS graduates rated their BHS preparation as a 6.97 on a ten-point ascendingscale, and rated their current life-situation as a 7.44.

The parents of the BHS graduates had 12 years of education -- 12.02 meanyears for the fathers and 11.92 mean years for the mothers. The mean yearsof education for the parents of graduates who are currently attending school is12.89 for the fathers and 12.54 for the mothers.
