The HU B fully conforms to the IE EE 802.3 Repea ter, AU I a nd10B ASE -T specificat ions, a nd provides t he flexibility t o connectnetw orks using IE EE 802.3, E th ernet Version 1 or Version 2equipment. As an IE E E 802.3 complian t repea ter, the HU B
tra nsmits re-timed da ta packets, regenera tes t he prea mble, extendsfra gments, a rbitra tes collisions a nd a utomat ica lly partit ions problemsegments , an d reconnects non-problem segment s. This feat ureminimizes th e impact on netw ork operat ion resultin g from a problemon one segment by isola ting t he problem segment s o th a t only thedevices on t ha t segment a re a ffected. When t he problem is solved, th eproblem segment is a ut oma tically reconnected to the netw ork.
Since the HU B utilizes pola rity det ection an d correction, the tw istedpair connections a re not sensitive to signa l pola rity . The netw ork w ill

tha t a re outlined in this cha pter. Your network insta llation must
meet t he condit ions, guidelines, specifica tions, a nd r equirements
included in this chapt er to obta in sa tisfa ctory performa nce from this
equipm ent . Fa ilure to follow th ese guidelines could produce poornetw ork performa nce.
2.1 NETWORK REQUIREMENTS
Ta ke ca re in plann ing a nd prepar ing t he ca bling an d connections for
your netw ork. The qua lity of the connections, the length of ca bles
a nd other condit ions of th e inst a llat ion a re critical fa ctors in
determining th e relia bility of your netw ork. The follow ing sections
describe the netw ork requirement s to operat e this equipment.
2.2 SELECTING A LOCATION FOR THE HUB
The HU B can be ra ck mounted, w a ll mount ed, or placed on a ny
horizont a l surfa ce. If not inst a lled in a 19-inch rack, the follow ing
requirements m ust be met w hen selecting a loca tion for your H U B .
NOTE : Be sur e th at t he l ocati on sel ected i s w i th i n r each of th e

REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS
I f a shelving unit i s to be used, i t must be ab le to suppor t
30 pounds of sta tic weight .
The tempera ture for the selected loca t ion must be mainta ined
between 5 a nd 50 C, a nd less tha n 10 C per hour t emperat urechange.
2.3 NETWORK GUIDELINES
The follow ing net w ork design guidelines m ust be follow ed w hen
connecting t he HU B to your netw ork:
As a genera l rule, 130 meters is the maximum length for an
unshielded tw isted pair segment. How ever, losses int roduced by
connections a t punch-down blocks a nd oth er equipment serve to
reduce th is limit. In most inst a llat ions, the optima l unshielded
tw isted pair length is 100 meters using sta nda rd P VC phone w ire.
Maximum link length is largely dependent on cable qua lity. I f
high qua lity, low a tt enuat ion cable is used, link lengths of up to
200 meters a re a chieva ble.
The device a t the other end of the twis ted pa ir segment mustmeet IE E E 802.3 10B AS E -T specifica tions.
The t ransceivers tha t w i ll be connected to the HU B (via a
SP IM-A) must m eet I EE E 802.3 sta nda rds a nd must n ot ha ve the
SQE test function ena bled.
2.3.1 10BASE-T Twisted Pair Network Requirements
When connecting a 10B ASE -T Tw isted P a ir Segment a t a ny of the10B ASE -T Tw isted P a ir HU B P orts (P ort s 1 th rough 12, a Single P ort
10BASE-T Twisted Pair Segment Interface module [SPIM-T or
SP IM-T1]), t he follow ing net w ork r equirements must be met:
Length - The IE EE 802.3 10BASE-T st a nda rd requires t ha t10B AS E -T devices t ra nsm it over a 100 meter (328 foot) link usin g
22-24 AWG uns hielded t w ist ed pa ir w ire.

REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS
Page 2-3
As a genera l rule, links up to 130 meters in length for un shielded
tw isted pair a nd 200 meters in length for shielded t w isted pair
a re achievable. For each connector or pat ch pan el in the link,
subtr a ct 12 meters from t he 150 meter limit . This w ill allow for
links of up to 126 meters using st a nda rd 24 AWG U TP w ire an dtw o pat ch pa nels within the link. Higher quality low a tt enuat ion
ca bles ma y be required w hen using links of great er tha n 126
meters. Due to ca ble dela y, the ma ximum link length is alw a ys
limited t o 200 meters, r ega rdless of the cable ty pe.
Insertion Loss -The ma ximum insertion loss a llow ed for a10B ASE -T link is 11.5 dB a t a ll frequen cies betw een 5.0 a nd 10
MH z. This includes the a tt enua tion of the cables, connectors,
pat ch pa nels, an d reflection losses due to impeda nce misma tches
in the link segment .
Impedance -U nshielded tw isted pa ir ca bles typica lly ha ve animpedan ce of betw een 85 to 110 ohms. Sh ielded tw isted pa ir
cables, such a s IB M Type 1 cable, ca n a lso be used. You should
remember th a t t he impedan ce of IB M Type 1 cable is typica lly
150 ohms. This increases th e signa l reflection ca used by th e
cable, but since the ca ble is shielded, this signa l reflection ha s
litt le effect on t he received signa ls qu a lity du e to the la ck of
crossta lk betw een th e shielded cable pairs. Ca bletron Syst ems10B ASE -T Tw isted P a ir products w ill work on t w isted pa ir cable
w ith 75 to 165 ohm s impeda nce.
J itter -Int ersymbol interference a nd reflections can ca use jitt erin th e bit cell timing, result ing in da ta errors. A 10B ASE -T link
must not generat e more tha n 5.0 nsec. of jitt er. If your ca ble
meets t he impeda nce requirements for a 10B ASE -T link, jitt er
should not be a concern.
Delay -The maximum propagation delay of a 10BASE-T linksegm ent m ust not exceed 1000 nsec. This 1000 nsec. ma ximum
dela y limits the ma ximum link segment length t o no great er tha n
200 meter s.
Crosstalk-Cr ossta lk is ca used by signal coupling betw een th edifferent ca ble pairs cont a ined wit hin a mult i-pair ca ble bundle.
10B ASE -T tr a nsceivers a re designed so tha t th e user does not
need t o be concerned a bout cable crosst a lk, provided t he cable
meets a ll other r equirements.

REQUIREMENTS/SPECIFICATIONS
Noise -Noise ca n be ca used by either crosst a lk or externa llyinduced impulses. Im pulse noise ma y ca use da ta errors if th e
impulses occur a t very specific tim es during da ta tr a nsmission.
