Welcome from the A.D.August, 2003

Dear Friend of Yellowjacket Athletics:

Greetings! Welcome to another exciting fall semester of men’s Yellowjacket soccer. I sincerely hope youwill find the information contained in this media guide helpful and informative.

As you look through this soccer media guide, you will notice the presence of many corporate sponsors. Iencourage you to visit the business locations of our many corporate partners and tell them how much youappreciate their involvement in our intercollegiate athletics program. The role they play in our program issignificant, and I hope you will join me in thanking them for their involvement. Many of these corporatepartners have been with us for many years. It is our continuing pleasure to develop and enhance theseimportant partnerships in Billings and the surrounding area.

Similarly, I sincerely thank you for your interest. I encourage you to become even more actively involved inany aspect of Yellowjacket Athletics. I would be happy to explain any number of ways you can getinvolved, such as joining the Yellowjacket Athletic Association by joining a sport’s booster club, volunteeringto help at games or other events, serving on a sport advisory committee, etc.

We are indeed very proud of the fine tradition this university has developed in the academic and athleticarenas. Since day one in 1927 we have had a Yellowjacket Athletics program. Our university leadershiphas historically and consistently valued the role played by Yellowjacket Athletics in the overall highereducation experience of our students. Our current university administation, under the leadership of Dr.Ronald Sexton, Chancellor, has continued that same belief system.

We are very proud of the academic achievement of each Yellowjacket. We are very pleased with the factthat each team continues to maintain team grade point averages above 3.0. Last year, for the third year in arow, our women’s cross country team led all NCAA Division II schools in the nation with the highest gradepoint average. Our student-athletes are indeed scholar-athletes.

Again, I hope you enjoy this publication, and I look forward to getting your feedback on this or any otheraspect of our Yellowjacket Athletics program. Cheer hard and cheer loud. I invite you to bring a friend tocheer with you. I hope you enjoy the season. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Gary R. Gray, Ed. D.

2003 Outlook

4

When asked about the upcoming season, MSU-Billings head men’s soccer coach Doug Seigle says simply,“Our goal is to make a name for ourselves.” After posting a 6-11 record last year in his first season with theYellowjackets, Seigle recruited strength, defense and speed to make sure MSUB is respected, if not feared, onthe field.

“Our defense is much stronger physically,” said Seigle. “We brought in a couple players and the players wealready had on the roster matured. Defense is one area where we’re greatly improved. As long as we stayorganized, we should be difficult to score against.”

While the Jackets have added muscle and intensity on the field, Seigle also believes that the goalkeeperposition will be key to MSUB’s success. “Our biggest competition (for playing time) in the preseason hasbeen at the goalkeeper position. We have a lot of keepers in camp and I think we’ll be much stronger there.”

While much of the focus has been on defense during the off season, Seigle also feels that the Yellowjacketswill be a more balanced offensive team in 2003. Last year midfielder Mark Cipolla was the only player toscore double-digit goals after netting 11 in 17 games. Cipolla and the team’s second-leading goal scorer, MikeGallegos who scored six goals, are both gone. Instead of leaving a void, Seigle thinks opportunities will openfor other players to get their shots.

“Last year we only had one player who scored a lot of goals for us,” remarked Seigle. “This year in themidfield we have two or three players who could score double-digit goals for the season. Robbie Timm,Thomas Pertuit and A.J. Reyes will score some goals this year. They’re creative players who have goodmoves with the ball.”

ScheduleThe Yellowjackets will find out early in the season just how much they’ve improved. They’ll play six gameson their first road trip, with four of the six coming against Division II competition. MSUB will open the seasonat the Humboldt State Tournament in Arcata, California over Labor Day weekend, facing HSU and Cal State-Stanislaus. They were originally scheduled to play Grand Canyon as well, but the Antelopes dropped out ofthe tournament at the last moment. To make up for the lost game, MSUB will face Humboldt State again onMonday, September 1. The Yellowjackets will drive from Arcata to Salt Lake City for the WestminsterTournament on September 4-6 before returning to Billings.

“The big thing with our schedule,” said Seigle, “is that we start right out of the gate with six games before weeven start classes. By the time we get home we’ll have six games under our belts, and we think thatexperience will help us later in the season. It’s somewhat of a disadvantage playing on the road, but on theother hand it gets you away from a lot of things and lets you focus on the objective.”

In 2002 the Yellowjackets played 16 of their 17 official games on the road. This season won’t be muchdifferent with 14 of 16 games being played away from the Magic City. The biggest change in the schedulemight be its format. Last year the Jackets missed a lot of class time with weekly road trips. This year Seiglehas worked hard to schedule road games in bunches to reduce missed class time.

“The road schedule is definitely a challenge,” he added. “It would be nice to have more home games, andwe’ll keep trying to get teams to come here in the future. But we’re not going to be scared to play on theroad.”

2003 Outlook

5

GoalkeepersLast season Yacine Zerizef (So., Casper, WY) and Kevin Petritz (Jr., Butte, MT) split time in goal for theYellowjackets. Seigle lists five goalkeepers on this year’s roster and thinks the competition will help theteam. An area of concern a year ago, the Jackets’ keepers might be one of the strengths this year. JessFeldtman (So., Lander, WY) could challenge Zerizef and Petritz for the starting job even though Seiglesays both returnees have worked hard in the off season to improve. Gordie Vierek (Sr., Paco, WA) andBrian Hunter (Fr., Cody, WY) will also add depth.

MidfieldersThe biggest improvement to the Yellowjackets’ midfield is its depth. Lucas Sanchez (Sr., Park City, UT) isback to 100 percent after recovering from an injury sustained two seasons ago. He played in 16 games in2002. Richard Watkins (Sr., Alzada, MT) adds experience after transferring from National American.Andres Calabro (Sr., Cipolletti, Argentina), considered a great leader and fiery competitor, returns aftersitting out last season. Calabro played on the tennis team last year after playing both soccer and tennis inprevious years. Robbie Timm (Sr., Park City, UT) will be in his first year of college competition after oncebeing considered a Division I caliber prospect. Thomas Pertuit (Jr., Billings, MT) worked hard in the offseason and reported to camp in great condition. He is the highest returning scorer (eight points in 2002)and should provide a spark to the offense as he sees more touches this year. A.J. Reyes (Fr., Quartz Hill,CA) redshirted in 2002 and is a creative player with a lot of physical talent. Victor Sargent (Fr., Billings,MT) is a Senior HS graduate who may have played himself into a starting position during fall camp.

ForwardsThe forwards are less experienced than the midfielders, but add a physical presence. Jesse Spann (So.,Rock Springs, WY), who played in every game last year as a true freshman, is considered one of thehardest working players on the team. He is bigger and stronger after an off season of workouts and addsversatility. Brian Palmer (Jr., Laramie, WY) didn’t get many touches last year, but has a knack for scoringgoals when he gets the ball in front of the box. Dustin Kono (So., Aberdeen, SD) is a Division I transferfrom University of Evansville who is the fastest player on the team. He will add speed and energy to a teamthat relies heavily on size and strength.

DefendersThe identity of the 2003 Yellowjackets could likely stem from the defense. Seigle likes the size and strengthhe can put on the field and thinks that the Jackets’ physical play will force other teams out of their style.Vincent Stefano (Jr., Palmdale, CA) is the leader of the defense. He’s the strongest player on the teamand will be moving back to his natural position of marking back after playing sweeper in 2002. DamianWandler (Sr., North Platte, NE) worked hard in the off season and came into camp in the best shape of hiscareer. Billy Dess (Sr., Great Falls, MT) has worked to recover from a broken leg and looks to be 100percent healthy. Stefano, Wandler and Dess each played in at least 16 games in 2002. Jeff Marsich (So.,Laurel, MT) transfers from Maranatha College and adds energy and strength to the defense. Patrick Boltz(So., Kaneohe, HI) has battled some injuries in the preseason, but is expected to be the defense’s anchoronce the season starts. Matthew Holm (Fr., Billings, MT) is another Senior HS grad who is developinginto a good college player.

About MSUB AthleticsMontana State University-Billings is an NCAA Division II member sponsoring twelve varsity sports, seven for women and five for men, plus co-ed cheerleading. The mission of MSU-Billings Athleticsis to provide opportunities for student-athletes that are high in both quantity and quality. By offeringa variety of teams for men and women as well as a broad range of academic programs, YellowjacketAthletics has continued to grow in recent years.

Fall Sports

The men’s soccer team faced a grueling road schedule in 2002, playing 16 of its 17 contests outsideof Montana. The Yellowjackets finished the season with a 6-11 highlighted by winning their firsttournament at the Northwest Nazarene Invitational. Doug Seigle will enter his second year at thehelm of the Jackets in 2003 with a team that he believes will be one of the strongest defensive squadsin the region. Seigle has added a balanced mix of transfers and high school players to a talentedgroup of returnees.

The Lady Jacket soccer team is in the midst of rebuilding after winning just twice in 16 games lastseason. The Yellowjackets played with a short roster for much of the year, sometimes suiting up only13 players. Second year coach Don Trentham has added depth and speed with one of the program’slargest-ever recruiting classes. With a strong home schedule that includes nine games atYellowjacket Field, 2003 could be turning point for the women’s soccer program at MSU-Billings.

The Yellowjacket volleyball team posted a 9-18 record in one of the most competitive conferences inNCAA II. The Jackets played four matches against eventual national champions in 2002, includingthree against NCAA II National Champion BYU-Hawaii and NAIA National Champion NationalAmerican. The season was highlighted by a 3-2 victory at Hawaii-Hilo after trailing 2-0. CoachPa’ulasi Matavao will boast the longest tenure of any Yellowjacket volleyball coach when he finisheshis fourth season in 2003. He also needs just five more victories to become the winningest coach inYellowjacket history.

The women’s cross-country team posted the highest team GPA among NCAA II teams for the thirdstraight year in 2002-2003. They have now been on the Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic list for eight years running. The Lady Jackets placed 16th at the West Regional Meet, ledby Ellen Swogger’s 47th place finish. Chelsea Lynnes wasn’t far behind in 59th place and bothrunners return this year.

The men’s cross-country team had as many as nine runners just a month before the season. By theend of the season, the Jackets were down to three runners and were unable to compete as a team.Freshman Brian Fosjord finished 90th at the Regional for the Jackets’ highest individual place.Coach Dave Coppock has a 2003 recruiting class that will put the Yellowjackets back into teamcompetition.

About MSUB AthleticsWinter Sports

The men’s basketball team ran into one hurdle after another in defending their PacWestChampionship last season. Although they finished second in the nation for scoring and three-pointers, the Jackets were so severely depleted by injuries and illnesses by midseason that theyfinished the season with only eight healthy players. Returning from injury for the 2003-2004 seasonwill be leading scorer Jerett Skrifvars and assist leader Dave Carse. Coach Craig Carse has bolsteredthe roster with several transfers during the off-season and will be looking to return to the NCAATournament.

The Lady Yellowjacket basketball team qualified for the West Regional for the second straight yearafter posting a 20-6 regular season record. They earned the region’s No. 3 seed and defeated CentralWashington in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Jackets lost to No. 1-rankedSeattle Pacific in the regional semifinals. MSUB will have to rebuild in 2003-2004 after graduatingone of the program’s best recruiting classes of all time.

Spring Sports

The MSU-Billings softball team was one of the most improved teams in the Pacific WestConference, posting a 15-20 overall record in just its third year of competition. Coach JeffAumend’s squad notched program-bests in several statistical categories including batting average(.271) and runs scored (136). The Lady Jackets’ conference season was highlighted when they tookthree of four games from second place Hawaii-Hilo at the end of the season. MSUB returns a solidcore of starters for the 2004 season, most of whom will be sophomores and juniors.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams hosted the second annual Pacific West Conference TennisChampionships in 2003, with each team placing fifth. The Yellowjackets, who traveled to Hawaiifor last year’s championships, hosted the four Hawaii schools and Western New Mexico. Almost every serioussports fan is familiar with thethree NCAA membership clas-sifications: Divisions I, II andIII. The public may be lessfamiliar with what the classifi-cations mean, especially inthe case of Division II.

In brief, Division I members are required to sponsor the mostsports and provide the most athletically related financial aid forstudent-athletes. Division III members, on the other hand, are pro-hibited from providing athletically related financial assistance.

So, what does it mean to be an NCAA Division II member? Morethan anything, it is a commitment to balance.

First, members are required to sponsor at least 10 varsity sports(at least five women’s sports) and offer at least a limited amount ofathletically related financial aid, although the requirement is far lessthan Division I’s. Those are the principal nuts-and-bolts standardsthat separate Division II from Divisions I and III.

But other, less tangible, considerations characterize Division IImembership. Student-athletes generally come from the area inwhich their institution is located. They are integrated with the stu-dent body. Many coaches and administrators perform other jobsor functions at their institutions, including teaching. Most Division

II student-athletes pay for school through a combination of schol-arship money, grants, student loans and employment earnings. The division’s philosophy emphasizes participation, and its finan-cial aid requirement helps ensure quality competition.

National championship opportunities in Division II are compara-ble to those in Divisions I and III. For 2003-04, Division II national-championship competition will be offered in the following sports:

Men WomenBaseball BasketballBasketball Cross countryCross country Field hockeyFootball GolfGolf LacrosseLacrosse RowingSoccer SoccerSwimming and Diving SoftballTennis Swimming and DivingIndoor track TennisOutdoor track Indoor trackWrestling Outdoor track

VolleyballIn addition, Division II institutions and student-athletes are eligi-

ble to compete in National Collegiate (all division) Championships inwomen’s bowling, men’s gymnastics, women’s gymnastics, men’svolleyball, men’s water polo and women’s water polo. Coed nationalchampionships also are conducted for all divisions in fencing, rifleand skiing.

NCAA Division II continues to evaluate and strengthen academicstandards to help ensure that the student-athlete experience isfocused on education.

At the 2003 NCAA Convention, the Division II membershipvoted to increase the standard for initial academic eligibility byincreasing the minimum number of required high-school corecourses from 13 to 14. The membership also voted to strength-en the progress-toward-degree requirement by increasing thegrade-point average required after the first and second seasonsof competition. The Division II Academic Requirements Commit-tee also continues to study the academic performance of trans-fer student-athletes to determine if additional regulation in thatarea is desirable.

A Division II degree-completion program ($241,000 in 2003-04)provides grants to assist student-athletes who did not completetheir degree before their eligibility expired. A $1 million AcademicSupport Program to improve the Division II’s academic environ-ment for student-athletes also was initiated in 2003-04; this pro-gram helps provide additional staff, such as academic counselors

or advisors; tutoring pro-grams; the ability to grantscholarships (such as apostgraduate scholarshipprogram); or underwritecomputer labs.

Meanwhile, the division ismoving toward a “gradua-tion-success” report that willprovide an improved mea-sure of academic outcomesfor Division II student-ath-letes. The new method willbetter account for transferstudent-athletes and stu-dent-athletes who do notreceive athletically relatedfinancial aid. A final decisionon the alternate measure islikely in fall 2003.

Division II Academics

Division II challenged 90 student-athletes and administrators tostrengthen the Division II identity when the first Division II Leader-ship Action Academy was conducted in February 2003 in Indi-anapolis.

The participants teamed to provide a unique perspective, ultimately focusing on the Division II attributes of “reality,”

“family” and “balance.”

“I love that the volleyball team is my family,” said one stu-dent-athlete. “I know the players on the football and basketballteams. I know the people we’re playing, and I know the peoplein my classes.”

Another participant said he valued the fact that his presidentknew his name, his hometown and what position he plays.

The academies will be conducted in each of six regions over athree-year period.

Other Division II programs that directly benefit student-athletes:

• Health and safety grants ($250,000 in 2003-04). The grantsaddress issues such as hazing, misuse of alcohol and substanceabuse.

• Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee grants($250,000). The grants enhance the effectiveness of conferenceSAACs.

Division II is a dynamic and engaging group of colleges, institutions, and co n-ferences of varying sizes and educational missions. Its members are committed to balancing the overall educational experience and academic success of st u-dents with participation in intercollegiate athletics.
