Those that were injured were taken by the Italian Hospital Ship, Arno, to an Italian hospital, the rest were rounded up and confined in a make-shift POW camp with no shelter and little food.

Series 15: Selwyn Muru

Biography: Selwyn Muru, Maori painter, sculptor, writer and film maker was born at Te Hapua, North. Auckland, NZ, 1939. His tribal affiliation is Ngati Kuri, Te Aupouri, Te Paatu, Ngati Rehia, Murikahara, Te Whakatohea. He studied at Ardmore and Dunedin Teachers’ College, but he left teaching in 1962 to concentrate on his art, holding his first one-man show at the Ikon Gallery in Auckland in the same year. He was largely self-taught as a painter and sculptor, believing ‘all creative artists are self-taught’. His philosophy of art closely followed the view of Picasso, whom he much admired, that artists should be honest to their own personal experiences and strengths. Muru’s paintings have often been characterized by their narrative political content, from the series telling the story of Parihaka (1972) to the 14 panels of Whakapapa , painted for the Kohia ko taikaka anake exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Wellington, NZ, in 1990. In later years he increasingly combined his skills as an orator and a painter, making extensive use of language in his works to address issues concerning the status of the tangata whenua (first people) within New Zealand. As a sculptor he is well known for Waharoa , a large gateway outside the Aotea Centre in the central Civic Square in Auckland. The habit grew, and he regards vernacular ballads in this album – all recorded in the early 1960s – as the final flowering of that particular talent. The ballads had their origin in a childhood spent living and travelling in a caravan around farming communities in the northern North

Audio 16.34 Main title: Two Black Crows Performer: Charles Mack and John Swor Company: Columbia Records USA Media: Audio cassette C60

Notes: The Two Black Crows (also called The Black Crows and Moran and Mack) was a blackface comedy act popular in the 1920s and 30s. The duo appeared in vaudeville, on Broadway, on radio, comedy records, and in film features and shorts. The act was originated by Charles Mack (1888–1934), who hired actor John Swor as his partner. "Swor & Mack" enjoyed moderate success until Swor left the act. He was replaced by George Moran (1881–1949). The team of Moran and Mack caught on and became major recording stars. "The Two Black Crows" became a weekly radio show in 1928; Moran and Mack also guest-starred on Fred Waring's radio show in 1933. Although Moran and Mack's gags were mostly corny (and very often non-racial) and the characters were stereotypical (one practical but naive, the other seemingly slow and lazy yet quick with a quip and a certain skewed logic), the relationship depicted plus their laconic delivery made them one of the most successful of comedy teams.
