Below, three of our recentgraduates describe theirexperiences at Kent andhow their studies helpthem in their currentwork.

Mehdi Alemohammad Trainee forensic psychologist at the Bracton Centre (NHS)‘I valued learning from experts whoworked directly with offenders. Thecourse benefits from well-knownchartered forensic psychologistsand researchers who work regularlywith offenders.

‘I particularly enjoyed the regularseminars given by well-knownforensic psychologists. Theintegration of theories with practicalexperience made learning muchmore pragmatic. There were alsotalks by police officers, volunteerorganisations and firefighters, highlighting the need to thinkoutside of the box and not to work in isolation. I attended field trips, ranging from a young offenderinstitute (YOI) to a high securityforensic psychiatric unit. Besides theobvious advantage of visiting andlearning from these sites, this alsohelped me to develop a broaderperspective of what is involved inforensic psychology. I am now usingthe skills I gained at the Universityworking at a specialist forensicmental health service in Kent.’

Emma Barrowcliffe PhD candidate‘The decision to study a Master’sin Forensic Psychology at Kentwas an easy one. Kent has a greatreputation! I researched deliberatefiresetting and managed to publishmy Master’s thesis in a top journal.I snapped up the chance to comeback to further investigate firesettingfor a PhD, which I will complete nextyear.’

Jade HutchingsTrainee forensic psychologist,Young People’s EstatePsychological Services, NOMS ‘My experience at Kent developedme into a well-rounded andconfident graduate. I developedas much passion for my disciplineas the lecturers who facilitated mylearning. This prepared me for myfuture as a psychologist. Since

graduating, I have worked as apsychology assistant and amcurrently a trainee psychologist, working towards chartered statuswith the British Psychology Societyand registered status with theHealth and Care ProfessionsCouncil.

‘My work in secure settings hasenabled me to gain experience inworking with young people, femaleoffenders and both male violent andsexual offenders. I am developingmy skills in risk assessment, therapeutic intervention, consultancy, research and training. The initial solid foundation oftheoretical knowledge and skills Igained at Kent continues to informand support my development.’
