The intent of this course is to actively engage learners as they work to strengthen foundational skills within the four key strands of the English content area (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) as preparation for college and career readiness. Additionally, students in this honors course must demonstrate higher-level thinking and the ability to work independently and with fewer scaffolds. There will be a strong emphasis on literary analysis and building rhetorical skills in order to prepare Honors English 10 students for English 11 and AP English Language and Composition. Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes critically and effectively read, analyze, and compose expository, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative texts improve reading, writing, speaking, thinking, and listening skills that transpire into the real world demonstrate the ability to use more complex vocabulary in everyday writing and speaking sharpen critical thinking, critical reading, critical writing, and critical communication skills develop and use research skills to evaluate, interpret, analyze, and synthesize information from a variety of sources develop and articulate informed opinions/perspectives on local and global issues communicate effectively and appropriately by using academic and professional discourse thoughtfully and positively contribute to the learning environment support and engage in a positive, safe, and collaborative learning environment REQUIRED MATERIALS: Students are required to be accountable for their learning, intellectual growth, and progress.
