It is with excitement that I welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year. We have missed your wonderful children over the summer and greeted their return with joy. Our week was enriched by seeing our new Durbin Creek families and students and wel- coming them to our wonderful school. Our teachers and staff worked tirelessly to be ready and classes started the first day with meaningful instruction. Getting back in the swing of school can be a challenge and we appreciate you making school a priority. We enjoyed meeting so many parents the first week of school. Our goal is to establish a collaborative relationship with all of our parents to ensure a positive experience for our students. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you to schedule mini-conferences with each parent to start the year off in a successful and positive way. I want to thank you in advance for taking the time to meet with your child’s teacher. Welcome parents to another great year of physical education! We would like for PE class to be a safe, positive fun filled experience for your child. Parents we need your help to make this happen! Here are a few suggestions to prepare your child for PE class in an effort to help keep your child comfortable and safe: 1. We suggest that they wear lightweight/loose fitting clothes that can get dirty, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. 2. We would also like for EVERY child to bring a water bottle to class, with their name on it, so that they can have water as needed. (Please, water ONLY) 3.We are asking that your child wear a shoe that provides the foot support for running safely. Sneakers, running shoes, tennis shoes, basketball shoes are the best! Please do not wear the following shoes to PE class: platform sneak-ers, boot style lace up sneakers, slip on sneakers with the back open or CROCS as these shoes do not provide enough protection during exercise. 4. If your child is sick, injured, or unable to participate in physical activity please send in a note to the classroom teacher. If there is an injury/sickness that will last for an extended period of time please indicate this in writing and when your child is able to participate again, PLEASE let us know. If you would like to contact us, email is the best way! Please give us 24 hours to get back to you. However, if you have an urgent matter and need to reach us, please contact the front office and they will notify us. Thank you. Ms. Westbrook and Ms. McMahon

Resource Record Overprotection hinders essential school skills

When children are born, they really are helpless. And it's the job of parents to protect them in every way they can. Once they reach elementary school, they become more capable and are able to do lots of things for themselves. Unfortunately, many parents still try to protect their elementary schooler’s from everything. And all of that well-intended "protection" actually smothers their children's budding inde-pendence. Overprotective parenting makes it difficult for children to learn essential skills for success in school and life, such as commu-nication, negotiation, perseverance, responsibility and deci-sion making. To avoid the many pitfalls of overprotective parenting: Don't do everything for your child. Let her do things for herself. Will she make mistakes? Probably. But she will learn from those mistakes. Don't be so quick to rescue your child when she forgets things. If she leaves her homework or gym shoes at home, let her face the consequences. Don't try to negotiate a better grade for your child. If you or your child are confused about a grade she receives, let your child talk to the teacher about it first. Don't call the parent of a child your child is complaining about in school. Give your child a chance to work it out. If it's a seri-ous problem, call the school.
