Chocolate Mousse, Skinny Lemon Muffin Dessert, Strawberry Trifle and Skinny Blueberry Muffin Dessert all have layers of ingredients. Maybe changing the form of the pot to compliment the layers could increase the products aesthetics. This specific packaging also has no information displayed on the front plane. Spreading the information from the top to the side of the packaging may help distribute the graphics.

SeParation of materialS

One of the problems I learnt at Closed Loop Recycling was the machinery having to deal with separating different types of plastics plus different colours of the same type.

I noticed on the rear label of a bottle of “Radox” shower gel that they try to communicate instructions on recycling. The graphics for the recycling factor are the most prominent on the rear label. The message reads,“PLEASE RECYCLE BUT REMOVE CAP FIRST”

reSealing ProDuctS

One type of resealing product is cleansing wipe packs. To prevent massive loss of moisture in the pack, the top of the packet can be resealed as the lid has adhesive round the edge.

This could be applied to edges of the coffin packaging to allow the user to reseal the bacon and therefore prolonging its life.

Page 9: M&S Project Document

9

DiSPlaYing/Stacking

There were various ways of displaying/stacking the product. One, laying down the coffin styled packaging and two, standing it upright. I also noticed that the packaging could only be stood upwards if there were some more of the product lying down at the back, acting as a support.

the laBel

The aesthetics of this product are decreased because the label is never uniformly adhered to the container and edges of the paper-based sticker are very vulnerable to wear and tear.

On a plus side, the label isn’t too graphically overloaded but there is no information about recycling.

Pe-hD film

For the user, the film is easy to tear away but there isn’t a way to reseal the product. Doing so would help extend the bacon’s lifetime.

methoDS of reSealing

The American food company “Plumrose” use resealing packs for their meat ranges. Like a lot of meat packaging, the outer parts of the film are heat sealed to the tray. A central strip of the film can be ripped open by the user and then resealed after if wanted. It uses adhesive on the outer areas of the film for the reseal to work.

After visiting a recycling plant that specialises in plastics, I learnt the common issues with plastic recyclability. The main issues lie within the process of material separation. Either separating plastic from plastic or plastic from another type of material needs many processes to sort out the wanted materials.

Having a resealable pack would remove the need for kitchen film or airtight plastic containers.

I decided to prototype one of my ideas from my design sheets. Using existing coffin packaging, a simple sleeve design and film used for cheaply laminating books, I tested the mechanism concept. The sleeve successfully opened and resealed the laminate with a smooth action.

Page 21: M&S Project Document

21

Page 22: M&S Project Document

22

teSting the mechaniSm

I decided to modify the original sleeve design and add some circular tabs. Having circular tabs instead of rectangular shaped tabs makes the mechanism more obvious.

I adhered this sleeve to a existing closed pack of bacon at the very end. I tried to open the pack by pulling the sleeve but the heat seal between the film and pack was too strong. I then used the existing tab to weaken it, this allowed the mechanism to work.

Page 23: M&S Project Document

23

angleD form

From the previous test/prototype, I discovered that I needed to think of a way to help the seal break when initially opening the pack by pulling the sleeve. I also had nowhere to hold /grip at any end, which was another issue I needed to tackle.

Therefore, I began to experiment with different forms that encouraged the seal to break easily.

I added to the trim of a existing pack a extra area that overall made the form at one end angled. I also added a area to grip whilst sliding the pack open and closed (red area). Having the offset angled trim made the film peel away at an angle, which prevented the mechanism from working correctly.

Page 24: M&S Project Document

24

graPhic DeSign

Still working with the original rectangular form of the existing coffin packs, I designed a simple net for the card sleeve.

I also worked on the sleeves graphic design. The key feature I wanted to communicate was the innovative function of opening and closing the pack. I wanted the graphics to educate the user with recycling as a lot of people aren’t conscious of sustainability.

triangular form

I experimented with a triangular form at one end to see if it would make opening the pack easier.

This is because the heat seal would follow the triangular form at the end; creating less resistance when pulling the sleeve at the same time maintaining enough strength to protect from accidental opening.

Slide function makes it easy to open, especially for people with limited dexterity.

Resealing the pack is effortless for the user and removes the need of household kitchen film or food containers.

Prolongs the bacon’s freshness and lifetime; it also acts a protection from being contaminated by other foods. Therefore reducing the chance of food waste.

The extra film used as part of the resealing mechanism is justified by its purpose.

Clear communication for the packaging’s recyclability will make the customer more conscious about sustainability and Marks and Spencer’s attention to this.

APET (Amorphous Polyester Terephthalate) would be thermoformed at various sizes to suit the different types/sizes of bacon cuts.

Benefits Thermoforming is a very inexpensive. APET is widely recycled. Good availability with high recycled content.

MAP (Modified atmosphere packaging) removes some or all the air in the tray and is replaced by protective gas mixtures. The film could also have an anti-mist coating to prevent condensation and decreased aesthetics.

Benefits Longer shelf life. Protects during handling and transportation. Therefore decreasing probability of waste.

carD Sleeve

Around 150gsm card sleeve provides enough strength to pull open the seal without ripping. Use of UV flexographic print on only one side.60mm of film is untouched from the tray sealing process so that it can be folded back over and adhered to the card.

Benefits One side of print would save ink, decrease cost and production time. Card is widely recycled.

We are currently extracting so much raw material and disposing waste at a rapid amount in the name of consumer demand that it’s destroying the Earth. We live on a finite planet and if we carry on at the current rate, our future society is going to look less promising. As designers, we shouldn’t just take sustainable factors into consideration but really apply them for every stage of the design process. Thorough research needs to be conducted to make sure that the most sustainable outcome for a product is achieved. When sourcing ideal materials for a product, maybe looking at recycled materials or easily recycled materials could be the first step. Then, where will the majority of the manufacturing take place so that the materials could be obtained locally and transportation is kept to the minimum?

In the UK, the majority of product manufacturing is done overseas and then imported to save on labor costs. Recently, more companies are choosing to manufacture in this country. This will develop a better society for the future by producing more jobs, increasing the countries economy and more to the point, create sustainable products. With recycling plants like ‘Closed Loop’ and advances in technology, materials are being recycled more efficiently. For example, plastics products are

being produced with high amounts of recycled content; some plastic products are nearly being produced at 100% recycled content.

More sustainable materials are now substituting traditional methods. Bulrush is now being used as a great substitute for basic plastic packaging. Designers could also experiment with sustainable materials to see they can substitute it into products that they thought was never possible before as new technologies continue to develop within manufacture.

It’s all well that some amazing sustainable substitute has been found that can be widely recycled or reused many times. However, it’s a two-way relationship. The consumer will need to know what to do with the material/product during or after use. The whole approach to sustainable design has only just started to be applied within companies at the turn of the century and a lot of people still have very unconscious understanding. Therefore, it is also up to the designer to successfully educate the consumer.

Information regarding reuse and recycling has to be communicated across simply to the user if they want to get them aboard. This could be done through good graphic design or maybe through the products semiotics.

concluSion

This design meets the briefs requirements whilst following Marks and Spencer’s Plan A credentials. The way the packaging communicates recycling is simple and therefore gives the user the idea that its effortless to recycle. Because the tray is not a composite, the PET is easily recycled, as no extra processes of separation are needed. The card sleeve is also great for recycling as there is little amounts of print and has no use of gloss or laminate finishes.

The form of the tray makes it very simple to open; this is especially helpful for people with limited dexterity. The fact that the pack is capable of being resealed means that there is less chance of food waste because of prolonged freshness and shelf life. The overall design modestly sits in the set tier for Marks and Spencer’s mid-range group.

The design is very easy to manufacture and could be implemented into other food groups sold by the retailer.
