CAStLE StREEt cLINIcAL RESEARcH RETREAT
final undergraduate thesis work completed at the end of year three.the project comprised of developing an individual brief, creating a complete environmental and construction study of the work in progress as well as creating a final fully developed building study.
the project is a residential Phase 0 and Phase 1 clinical research centre adjacent to a newly masterplanned medical research building based on Castle street in Sheffield.this project contains a free high street walk-in consultation centre which operates as a lure to potential volunteers. Above the walk-in centre there is a residential facility for research volunteers. this facility includes sports and leisure spaces, outdoor and indoor gardens and volunteer bedrooms. there is also a floor dedicated to test conduction and quick transport links for cases of emergency.
As well as dealing with the practical development of a design, this project’s primary interest was in creating an architectural journey between temptation - Capture - Consequence.
A view of the elevated garden - one of the project’s main elements.

[02] Metal sheet roof bolted on a universal beam attached to the ctructural fin.Metal gutter is fitted at the end of the sheet roof.
[03] Insulated concrete wall panel fitted on a concrete footing bolted to the ground with foundation bolts.
[04] Steel box section fitted onto a tophat footing bolted with foundation bolts.
[05] Concrete structural ‘tree fitted onto a concrete footing bolted with foundation bolts. Contains insulation and drainage layer.
[06] Universal H beam, 350 mm with inserted 150mm box section bolted with a plate carrying hollow batens carry-ing glass fitted into glazing channels
[07] Irrigation channel
[08] 900 mm concrete foundation on top of 100mm insulation, dpm and hard core. Covered with structural streed with underfloor heating.
Structural trees were designed to draw natural light in distinct patterns. (middle right image)
During the design process, I experimented with different shapes. A tree with a symmetric geometry came out as the most stable.
Materials used in the tree design are based on the guidelines for intensive green roof systems.

PINStoNE StREEtBOUTIQUE PHARMAcy DESIgN
Small design project completed at the start of final year. the aim of this project was to design a ‘boutique’ at a given site in Sheffield. Selecting a pharmacy gave me the opportunity to re-define an otherwise well known store design.
Combining a pharmacy with a cafe/restaurant has been inspired by the works of Damien Hirst who questioned our relationship with food and medicine.

MAIN ENTRANcE AREA
the main entrance area has been designed to be on the opposite side than the traditional ‘expected’ entrance would be.
that is in order of supporting the sequence of the visitor’s journey. the triple height space provides a “wow factor” typical for a boutique and small peeks through openings on to laycock house and into the cafe area reveal unexpected twist onto the traditional pharmacy.
PORTABLE TERMINALS
In addition to the main till, bottom floor shop assistants will be able to carry portable payment terminals to assist people in a rush.
Bottom floor staff are also there to avoid shoplifting.
STORAgE BASEMENT
In addition to storage of small products available near the toilet, there is also an entrance to the main storage basement for the bulkier goods. on plan we can see the easy access to this basement from the new street for loading and unloading goods.
ILLUSTRATION FURNITURE
to illustrate the possible interior solution, I have chosen Mies Van Der Rohe designed furniture due to it’s ‘clinical’ nature, which runs with my futuristic lab idea.

HEAD HoUSE SHORT DESIgN PROJEcT
