The programme will be delivered by the University of Dundeein Cairo, Egypt using the learning and teaching facilities of
ASCDE and with ASCDE providing a concurrent orthodontic
clinical residency programme.
Description of the
Programme
This part time 3 year masters programme provides theacademic knowledge skills and attitudes to progress in a career
in orthodontics. It is therefore aimed at qualified dentists who
wish to specialise in this area. When undertaken in
conjunction with the ASCDE three year orthodontic clinical
residency programme it aims to prepare students for success inthe Membership in Orthodontics examination of the UK Royal
Colleges.
Reason(s) for introduction
of the programme, and
planned benefits to the
University
There is unmet demand for education and training at Masters
level in the Middle East in this subject area.
ASCDE have scoped the potential market and identified a
significant cohort of potential students. A visit by theprogramme lead (Prof D Bearn) to ASCDE facilities in January
2012 also allowed the opportunity to discuss the programmewith a large group of interested potential students.
The delivery of this programme in country will build on other
Middle East initiative of the University raising its profile as a
preferred provider of healthcare graduate education across the
Middle East. This will be the first UK awarded Masters
degree in dentistry to be delivered in Egypt and if successful
could be a model for other specialties and other locations.
Once established the programme will generate an income
stream to the University and it is envisaged that a proportion of
students will continue to PhD studies in Dundee.
Research dissertations will provide publishable research

outputs, with preparation of a manuscript suitable for
submission being part of the structured assessment of the
research Module (Module 7).
*Student Recruitment
Summary Target student market: Dentists in Middle East wishing to
specialise in Orthodontics
14 per year initially, growing if sustainable demand isevident
ASCDE have provided detailed lists of potential students
who wish to undertake this programme, having previously
undertaken CPD opportunities with ASCDE.
ASCDE will provide local learning and teaching facilities, which will be supplemented through MyDundee for
academic support

Approach to learning,
teaching and assessment,
including any distinctive
features
The broad approach will be intensive3-4 day face-to-face in
country sessions delivered by Dundee faculty to review
previous learning and to identify new learning targets and
provide supporting tutorials and seminars. Between these
sessions students will complete coursework and self-directedlearning that will be reviewed and assessed at the followingface-to-face session. Seminar and workshop teaching

Employability and benefits
for graduates
There is significant demand for specialist orthodontic care
across the Middle East region, and there are currently
insufficient educational providers to deliver the necessary
programmes leading to many dentists attending full time
courses in the USA and UK.
Successful students will be able to practise as both general
dentists and specialist orthodontists, enhancing their careers
and career prospects. Suitable students who so desire will be
able to pursue their studies through PhD opportunities in
Dundee.
