Asafamousscientist(LorenEiseley)saidseveraldecadesago:‘Ifthereismagiconthisplanet,itiscontainedinwater’.Withoutwater,lifeonEarthwouldbeimpossible.Atthesametime,watercanbelifethreatening.Justthinkaboutthedestructiveforceofriversthatbursttheirbanksorthepolluteddrinkingwaterwellsthattakethelivesoftwohundredchildreneveryhourworldwide.Waterisourfriendandourfoe.Thatiswhyitiscrucialtounderstandthisnaturalelementanddealwithitthebestandmostingeniouswaywecan.Forexample,didyouknowthatgroundwatercantakeaslongasahumanlifetimetomovejustonekilometre?Orthatwaterregulatesthetemperatureonearth?AndthatnolessthantenpercentoftheDutchdemandforelectricitycanbewonfromwater?ThetrackWaterManagementteachesyouhowthiscanbeachievedandhelpsyoutodevelopthenextgroundbreakinginnovationsinthefieldofwater.

ProgrammeTheMSctrackWaterManagementfocusesontheunderstandingofnaturalsurfaceandgroundwatercurrentsandthemanagement,controlandutilisationofwatercurrentsforsociety.Thiscomprisesbothsurfaceandgroundwater,precipitationand,forexample,wastewater.Furthermore,WaterManagementdoesnotonlyinvestigatethequantityofwater,butalsofocusesonthequalityofsurfaceandgroundwater.Ifyouareinterestedinthebehaviourofwater,howwecancontrolwaterflows(usingthenewesttechnologiesandapplications),howwecanusewastewatertoprovideenergy,orhowwecanimprovetheproductionofdrinkingwater,thistrackwillsuityouperfectly!

CurriculumWaterManagement

SixspecialisationprofileshavebeendefinedforMScWaterManagement.Thespecialisationprofilesarerelatedtothepreferenceofthestudentforacertainspecialisationandthesissubject.Thedepartmentwillgiveadequateguidancewithregardstothisprocessduringanintakediscussion.Thecompositionofthepackageofspecialisationcoursesissubjecttoapprovalbytherelevantprofessor.

Hydrologyfocusesonthesciencethatencompassestheoccurrence,distribution,movementandpropertiesofthewatersoftheEarthandtheirrelationshipwiththeenvironmentwithineachphaseofthewatercycle(acontinuousprocessbywhichwaterispurifiedbyevaporationandtransportedfromtheearth'ssurfacetotheatmosphereandbacktothelandandoceans).

Geohydrologyteachesyouhowtodevelopinnovativeandpowerfultoolsforthemodellingofgroundwatersystems.Conceptualmodelsaretestedbyformulatingandimplementingmathematicalmodels,andperformingcalculations.Ifthecomputationscannotconfirmtheperceivedflowpatternoreffect,thenitprobablydoesnotexist.

WaterResourcesManagementconductsresearchonirrigationsystems,polders,urbanareasandentireriverbasins.Ouraimistosupportwatermanagementpracticesbyincreasingunderstandingofwatermanagementprocesses,providingknow-howandexpertise,andofferinganindependentview.

UrbanDrainageandWaterManagementconcentratesonurbantasksand(recently)builturbanplansforinnercityinterventions,forrestructureandtransformationoflocationsatformerharbourandindustrialsitesandfornewlocations.

Thefocusisonurbandesignmethods,instrumentsandguidelinesandonsustainableurbanismingeneral,inordertogatherknowledgeonhowtodevelopfuture-proofplans.

DrinkingWaterEngineeringteachesthetechnologicalbackgroundsofthetreatmentprocessesappliedfortheproductionofdrinkingwater.Thetreatmentprocessesaredemonstratedwithlaboratoryexperiments.Studygoals:Knowledgeoftechnologicalbasicsandthedesignparametersofdrinkingwatertreatmentprocesses.

WastewaterTreatmentdealswiththebackgroundandapplicationofvariouswastewatertreatmenttechnologies.Bothhigh-techandlow-techsystemsarediscussed,andwhichoftheseareapplicabletoindustrialisedordevelopingcountries.Anaerobictreatmentsystemsthatfocusonresourcerecoveryarediscussedextensively.Moderntechnologiesfor(extensive)nutrientremoval/recoveryaredealtwith,aswellasmembranetechniquesforwastewatertreatment.

Worldwide,waterproblemsareincreasing.Thedemandforwaterisrising,theworld’spopulationisgrowingandwearefacedbychallengessuchasclimatechangeandpollution.InDelft,youwillacquiretheknowledgeanddeveloptheskillsthatyouneedtoaddressthesechallenges.Youwillfirstgetanoverviewofthefieldandthenyouwillgetplentyoffreedomtofocusonwhatyou’rereallyinterestedin:drinkingwater,irrigation,groundwater,etcetera.Thereisalotofchoice,andthelevelishigh.AccordingtotheStockholmInternationalWaterInstituteandElsevier,Delftranksnumber1intheNetherlandsandnumber4worldwideinthefieldofwatermanagement.Youwillhaveampleopportunitiestogoabroadforlongerorshorterperiods,andifyouwishyoucanfollowsomeorallofthecoursesonline.Andlastbutnotleast,thereisaveryactivestudentassociation.

Whatparticularlyappealstomeabouttheprogrammeistherelevanceofthethemesthatyouaddress.Justwatchanynewsbulletinandyou’llseethechallengesfacingtheworldasaresultofflooding,droughtandrisingwaterlevels.StudentswhofeeltheurgetoproducesolutionsfortheseissuesareattherightplaceintheWaterManagementprogramme.Duringthefirstweeks,youareimmediatelychallengedtodevelopawatersystemforAfricaorasolutionthatwillimprovethewaterqualityintheRhine.Hands-onandstimulating!That’swhatcharacterisestheprogramme.Yougetalotofpracticaltrainingandyoualsohavethefreedomtodecideinwhichdirectionyouwishtospecialise.Butwhateveryouchoose,youimmediatelyseethetheoryinpracticewhenyouwalkorcyclealongthecanalsofDelftattheendoftheday.Aworldopensupforyou,alsointermsofdifferentcultures.Theprogrammehasastronginternationalcharacter.Byinteractingwithothercultures,youlearnnewwaystogeneratesolutions.Andthatisexactlywhatweneedtoproducegroundbreakingsolutionsforourglobalwaterproblems.

IfyouholdaDutchBScdegreethatiscloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,youcanbeadmitteddirectly.However,ifyourundergraduateprogrammeisnotcloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogrammeyouwillberequiredtotakeadditionalcoursesinwhatiscalledabridgingprogramme.Thismaybeastandardprogrammeoritmaybetailoredtoyourspecificsituation.
