Field Awareness


Field Awareness Review

The following slides contain issues that were seen during

product testing and may occur in the field. Please

familiarize yourself with each of these issues, as you will

be tested on the key concepts at the conclusion of the

lesson.

Samples and reference images are provided where

available.


Toner Cartridge Replacement Guidelines

• When to replace the Cartridge:

– Broken port shutter

– Smart Chip read errors (31.4X)

– Cartridge motor stalls (201.2X)

• DO NOT replace the Cartridge for PQ defects!

• All PQ defects are associated with the Imaging Unit.

• The Cartridge does not contain any EP components.


Imaging Unit Replacement Guidelines

• When to replace the Imaging Unit:

– PQ defects associated with Imaging Unit components:

• Spots, streaks, jitter, leaks, etc.

– PQ defects associated with Photoconductor Drum defects:

• Dings, scratches, spots, leaks, etc.

– Smart Chip read errors (31.6X)

– CTLS read errors (31.2X)


• This new state occurs when the machine has determined that the

cartridge is out of useable toner.

• The machine will hard stop to prevent damaging the imaging unit

by running the device without any toner.

• The only way to clear this message and resume printing is to

replace the toner cartridge.

• Shaking the cartridge will NOT allow you to continue printing.

“Replace imaging unit, 0 estimated pgs remain [84.3x]”

• This new state occurs when the machine has determined that the

imaging unit has reached its rated page count capacity or its

cleaner capacity.

• The only way to clear this message and resume printing is to

replace the Imaging Unit.


230.03 Paper Jam – Duplex Unit area

• This Duplex jam is caused by excessively skewed media or

shingle/multi-feeds being fed into the duplex.

• If caused by excessive skew, check to make sure the tray side

guides are set correctly.

• If shingle or multi-feeds are frequent, fan the media or replace it.

• Pick tires, pick assembly, and/or the separator assembly (MS510,

MS610) may need to be replaced for frequent shingle/multi-feeds.


241.24 Paper Jam - Tray Area

• Paper that is heavily corrugated (ridged or uneven) may not pick

from the Tray.

• The leading edge bumps on the bottom of the diverter resulting in a

paper jam.

• To correct, try flipping the paper over, or turn it 180 degrees.

• If that doesn't help, will need to replace the paper.


242.42 Paper Jam – Tray Area

• The Paper Tray is closed with stripped paper in paper path. This will

happen if the paper tray is overfilled causing the paper to be pushed

up into the paper path.

• Make sure the tray is not overfilled. Use the level indicator found in

the tray.

• Verify if the Media Size & Type Setting matches actual paper size &

type loaded.

• Make sure the tray guides are set correctly.


Imaging Unit Late Life Edge Streaks

• As the Imaging Unit nears its end of life, vertical streaking may be

seen on the edges of the printed page.

• Replacing the imaging unit should resolve the problem.


250.06 Paper Jam – MPF Area

• This error means that the printer failed to feed from the MPF tray.

• The primary causes have typically been either of the following:

1. The media is backing away gradually from the feed nip due to the cycling motion

of the MPF lift plate.

2. The media is skewed in the MPF tray (caused when loading media with the side

guides not set correctly)

3. Shingle sheets in the middle of a stack of media when loaded into the MPF tray.

• Issue 1 is typically seen with media sizes smaller than LTR/A4. To

prevent it from happening, the MPF extender can be moved inward

until it butts up against the trailing edge of the stack.

• Issues 2 and 3 can be corrected by setting the side guides snug

against the paper and making sure there aren't any individual sheets

protruding from the media stack.


Partial Image and Blank Pages

• These may be seen occasionally due to the flushing feature.

• If the customer sees excessive occurrences, the pick system will need

to be checked and possible parts replaced:

– Pick tires

– ACM

– Separator assembly (MS510, MS610)


Media Coming Out Wrinkled or a Milky Appearance

• The printed image has a “milky” or running appearance on the

paper.

• This defect normally occurs with very light media or paper that has

been exposed to high humidity.

• Check to make sure the media used is supported. If not, replace with

supported media.

• Check to see if the media is stored properly.

– Example of improper storage: Media stored out of its packaging while not in the

printer.

• Try a new ream of supported media.

• If the media is not the cause, the fuser may need to be replaced.


Horizontal Dark Band on Printed Pages

• On a single page, a horizontal, dark band located about 37mm or

1-1/2 inches from the page top can be seen. This typically appears

in a graphic but can also appear in text.

• The likely cause is toner contamination on the charge roll.

• The band appears in the first 37mm (1-1/2") of a page. Typically, it

will clear up in the first 30-40 pages or with continuous printing.

• If the defect still occurs replace the Imaging Unit.


Vertical Band in the Middle of the Printed Page

• If printing a full-coverage job on Letter or A4 immediately following

a narrow media print job, you may see a large, dark, vertical band

in the printed image.

• The band is same width as the narrow media used in your prior job.

Vertical Band in the Middle of the Printed Page – con’t

• This effect is caused by a non-uniform charge on the

Photoconductor drum when printing a narrow media.

• The result is a "ghost image" of the narrow media job.

• The charge differential on the photoconductor will dissipate after a

short time.

• To avoid this type of print defect, giving the printer time to cool after

printing narrow media before changing the paper size to a larger

media type.


J-seal Leaks on the Imaging Unit

• Occasional J-seal leaks have been seen from the Imaging Unit.

• Toner will be seen on the main frame near the Imaging Unit sides.

• If toner build up is excessive, it may even fall into the Tray below.

Cleanup with a toner vacuum may be needed.

• Replace the Imaging Unit to fix the problem.


Constant “Door Open” Message

• This issue is most commonly caused by improper installation of the

toner cartridge – usually by installing it slowly into the printer.

• If the cartridge isn’t fully seated, the front door won’t close.

• A cartridge retainer finger protrudes from the guide rail; it is

actuated when the front cover closes. If the cartridge isn’t installed

properly, the retainer can’t actuate and the front door will not close.


Printer Prematurely Posts “Bin Full” Message and Stops Printing

• The printer stops printing and shows a “Bin Full” message even

though there are only few sheets of paper in the output bin.

• In high humidity environments, paper may curl or “smile" in the

output bin.

• The curled side of the paper may touch the Standard Output Bin

Full Sensor and trigger the message.

Printer Prematurely Posts “Bin Full”… - con’t

• To prevent this issue, decrease the amount of paper curl by following

the suggestions below:

– Store paper in a low humidity environment.

– Keep the paper sealed in its original packaging and remove it only when you are

ready to use it.

– If the paper stack has been seated in the tray for some time, remove it, flip it over,

and then put it back in the tray. Depending on the type of paper, this procedure

can reduce the amount of curling.

– Do not operate the printer where it can be exposed to higher than normal levels of

humidity.


Printed Sheets Do Not Stack Properly in the Output Bin

• Printed sheets do not stack properly in the output bin and may push

printed pages onto the floor (1).

• In high humidity environments, paper may curl or “smile" in the

output bin.

• If the curl is severe enough, the back of the sheet will rise above

the rollers (as seen below) and be hit by the next sheet (2).

• To prevent this issue, decrease the amount of paper curl by following

the suggestions below:

– Store paper in a low humidity environment.

– Keep the paper sealed in its original packaging and remove it only when you are

ready to use it.

– If the paper stack has been seated in the tray for some time, remove it, flip it over,

and then put it back in the tray. Depending on the type of paper, this procedure

can reduce the amount of curling.

– Do not operate the printer where it can be exposed to higher than normal levels of

humidity.

– To avoid the paper being pushed onto the floor, pull or lift the paper output bin

extender.


No “Bin Full” Message when Using Narrow Media

• The printer does not sense that the output bin is full with media

narrower than 7.5 inches (190.5 mm). Paper may be push on the

floor.

• This is due to the location of the Standard Output Bin Full

Sensor and NOT a defect.

• Test the printer with Letter/A4 or Legal-sized paper to confirm the

sensor is functioning as designed.

• The fix is to pull or lift the paper output bin extender and remove the

media from the output bin before it stacks above the rollers.

Front Access Door Not Closing when Pushed from the Left Side

• The front access door may not close completely if pushed only from

the left side. The printer will not go into Ready mode.

• Close the front door by pushing on both the left and the right-hand

sides at the same time, or on its center, as shown in the images

below.


Unable to Load Paper into the Multipurpose Feeder

• The customer can’t load 100 sheets of plain paper at the same time

into the Multipurpose Feeder (MPF) because of a plastic bail.

• Either load paper in two smaller stacks or lift the bail (see image

below) when sliding in the paper stack.


Sporadic 200.29 Paper Jam – ESD Ground

• ESD grounding is critical to proper operation.

• ESD Ground points MUST be properly reinstalled and verified:

– MPF Stiffener Bracket

– MPF Shaft

– Exit Static Brush

– Lift Plate Ground

• Failure to reinstall ground mechanisms will result in sporadic 200.29

“paper jam” messages.

• Other ground points to note:

– Transfer Static Brush

– Input Shaft

– Frame Upper Top


Controller Board Connectors

• JARW1 / JARW2 (circled in Blue): Connectors are interchangeable.

– No damage, no adverse effect on printer operation.

• JT_PRE /JP_PRE (circled in Red): can be switched.

– No damage will occur, but Tray Present / Paper Present will not function properly.

– Only present on eTask models.

– Cable ends are color coded to match controller.

• JLIFT1 / JCART1 (circled in Yellow): Can be switched.

– Could result in over packing the Imaging Unit with toner.

– JLIFT1 is only present on eTask.

– Printer will not pick paper from Tray 1.

– Cable ends are color coded to match controller.

• JUICC1 or JOPP1 (depending on model) (circled in Pink): FFC cable

can be plugged in backward.

– Controller Board marked “CONTACT” to indicate correct cable orientation.

– Plugging in backward will not do damage but control panel will not function – will

beep 5 times.

Controller Card Removal – MX310/MX410/MX51x/MX61x

• The controller card area has several cables.

• The connectors are color coded.

• The fan should be removed for access to cables

• The toroid holder unclips


Loss of Collation in the ADF

• The ADF’ s output will lose collation when the curled pages slide

underneath each other.

• The solution: The customer should try changing the paper used in

the printer, or wait a few minutes between printing and coping.


Curl in the Media Causing ADF Duplex Jams

• The engine with a mixture of media and environment can produce

excessive curl in the media.

• When pages with 20mm of curl or greater are run through the ADF,

the duplex cycle will cause the pages to get sucked back in the

recirculation path.

• To resolve, try changing the paper used in the printer or wait a few

minutes between printing and coping.


Jams in the ADF Duplex Due to Dog-Eared Pages

• Pages that are dog-eared will catch on the paper path during re-

circulation, causing the page to stop and skew in the ADF duplex

path.

• To resolve, use the flatbed scanner for questionable pages and the

ADF for undamaged, good quality pages.


ADF Misfeeds on High Coverage 100% Cotton Media

• The MX310 ADF has a separation pad which is different from the

MX410, MX510, and MX610.

• The high coverage pages may drag the previous pages through the

separation system.

• To resolve, fan the pages and/or divide the job scanning job.

MX310 Only


ADF Multi-feeds with Hole Punched, Stapled or Edge Weld Media

• The ADF may multi-feed when it can’t separate the pages. This is

especially likely on poor quality pages or those that are stapled, hole

punched or have edge welds.

• To resolve, fan the paper and verify that the pages are separated or

use the flatbed scanner.

MX310 Only


Moiré Patterns on Copies

• It is possible that a combination of scanning and printing can create

Moiré patterns.

• To resolve, try different copy modes, Photo mode from B/W laser.


Backside Images on Copies

• The MX610 series machine uses a CCDM scanning apparatus,

which is different from the MX310, MX410, and MX510 series.

• To resolve the problem, use Text mode or Mixed mode to help

reduce the background from the page.

MX610 Only


Dark Copies

• Since the MX610 series scanner uses a CCDM scanning apparatus,

the brightness will look different than a MX310, MX410 or MX510

scanner.

• To resolve, adjust the brightness in the copy menu.
