Australian students’ surgical conference

A few months back a group of students from Bond attended the Australian Students’ Surgical Conference in Sydney at UNSW where medical students from all over Australia and New Zealand came together to hear what the leading surgeons from each of the nine surgical specialties had to say.

The morning consisted of keynote addresses from the President of the surgical training pathway, followed by surgeons from the cardiothoracic, plastic, vascular, urological, paediatric, orthopaedic, head and neck and neurosurgical fields with each speaker addressing the pros and cons of their specialty and reasons to pursue individual areas of interest.

The information given was very interesting and two aspects highly applicable to many of us who wish to pursue surgery were the surgical training pathway as well as overseas training. It seemed that most of the surgeons that attended the ASSC had trained internationally in Canada, America, England or elsewhere in the world, which gave us a better personal perspective as to how they reached their positions today.

A handful of podium and poster presentations by medical students that were selected from multiple entries followed the keynote speeches, including a poster presentation from a fellow Bond student currently completing his last semester of medicine.

Anatomy Workshop; Needles and Suturing Workshop; Bone School Workshop; Chest Drain Workshop and; Aortic Valve Surgery Workshop’. I was lucky and was one of the twelve out of several hundred students who managed to get selected for the aortic valve workshop.

At the aortic valve workshop, we were given one horse heart to work with between three people and each group was given one of two different valves, either the tissue valve, or the mechanical valve. My group got the prosthetic tissue valve (worth thousands!) donated by the Alfred hospital for our use. In summary, we removed the three cusps of the aortic valve then using multiple sutures and surgical tools, we attached a prosthetic pig valve into the horse heart. Overall, it was a once in a lifetime experience for a medical student as these procedures are not practiced until you are a few years into your cardiothoracic surgical training and to experience it first hand, I was very appreciative of the donations from the Alfred as well as the surgeons and nurses who helped us out.

Overall, it was a great learning experience at UNSW and it gave great insight into what surgery is all about. I would definitely encourage all students who are interested in surgery to attend the ASSC next year in New Zealand.

- Nelson Chen (2nd year)
