WHAT’S AHEADMOORHEAD, Minn.--The No. 4 Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team (34-3) will play Northwest Missouri State in the Sweet 16/Central Region final of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The Dragons are playing in their second NCAA Tournament under head coach Chad Walthall. Walthall led MSUM to a first round victory over Southwest Minnesota State in 2012 before falling to Colorado School of Mines in the second round. After two wins in this year’s tournament, MSUM is now 3-1 in the NCAA Tournament under Walthall. The Dragons are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since transitioning to Division II in 1995.

MSUM was ranked No. 4 in the final regular season edition of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll, released on Mar. 10. The Dragons are also ranked No. 4 in the Bennett Rankings.

MSUM is 3-0 all-time against Northwest Missouri State, the last meeting coming on the opening night of the season, Nov. 14. The Dragons defeated the Bearcats 75-66.

As a team, Northwest Missouri State ranks first in the MIAA in scoring defense (64.4 points per game), scoring margin (+9.4), three-point field goal percentage (.434), turnover margin (+3.71), and assist to turnover ratio (1.3).

MIAA Freshman of the year Justin Pitts leads the team in scoring (17.3 points per game, third MIAA) and is first in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.505).

FIRST MEETING: Nov. 14On the opening night of the season, a balanced offensive attack helped MSUM capture its first win of the season over Northwest Missouri State, 75-66.

The Dragons shot convincingly better than the Bearcats from the field, draining 47.3% from the floor compared to 31.4%. MSUM also out-rebounded Northwest Missouri State 47-35, including a 37-22 edge on

defensive rebounds.MSUM had four players score in double digits in the game, led by junior Ngijol Songolo and sophomore Aaron Lien, who each had 14 points. Junior Isaac Sevlie had five blocks, a career high.

MSUM trailed 23-21 with 2:28 left in the first half before the Dragons scored the final five points of the half. Sevlie began the run on a layup with an assist from junior Tyler Vaughan. A layup and a free throw from Lien gave the lead back to MSUM at 26-23 heading into halftime.

Senior Urbane Bingham hit a three-pointer at the 15:21 mark of the second half to push the Dragons lead to 37-30. The Bearcats clawed back and tied the score three more times before a free throw from senior Prescott Williams gave the Dragons the lead for good at 52-51 with 7:08 left in the game.

A 12-4 run opened up the game for MSUM, as they led 63-55 after a three-pointer from Lien at the 3:43 mark. The Dragons converted 9-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes of the game to secure the victory at 75-66.

A LOOK BACK: NCAA TOURNAMENT FIRST & SECOND ROUNDJunior forward Isaac Sevlie scored a game-high 23 points to help the MSUM earn an 80-68 win over Pittsburg State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. MSUM led for all but 46 seconds of the game, and that was when the score was tied on two separate occasions. The Dragons held a 16-15 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half but went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to push the lead to 27-17.

The Dragon lead shrunk to 48-46 five minutes into the second half, but MSUM responded with seven points in a row to push the lead to 55-46 with 10:49 left. MSUM’s lead never dropped below five the rest of the night.

A 20-2 run over the final seven minutes of the first half propelled MSUM to a 71-60 win over Central Missouri in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

A balanced attack – led by seniors Prescott Williams and Urbane Bingham – and a stellar defensive effort over the final 30 minutes helped the Dragons reach the Sweet Sixteen in Division II for the first time in school history.

•Head Coach Chad Walthall was honored as NSIC Coach of the Year, announced Feb. 26. The Dragons enter the NCAA Tournament as NSIC regular season Co-Champions with a conference record of 20-2 and an overall record of 32-3. MSUM has set single season school records for most wins (32) and most conference wins (20) this season.•In his fifth season as head coach, Walthall is now 110-44 at MSUM, with a conference record of 73-37 and a winning percentage of 71.4 percent. •With two conference titles already under his belt, Walthall has vaulted the MSUM program to national recognition, earning 20 wins for the third time in his tenure and the ninth time in school history. Walthall trails only Dave Schell-hase for most 20-win seasons in school history with four.•In 2011-12, Walthall led the Dragons to a 21-10 record and the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1964. Last season, the Dragons went 21-8 and won the NSIC North Division, the first conference title since 1981-82.

•Junior forward Isaac Sevlie was named to the All Conference First Team and is averaging 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Sevlie leads the Dragons in blocks with 51 and field goal percentage at .595 (157-of-264). The junior forward is shooting 79.7 percent (122-of-153) from the free throw line this season. The Red Wing, Minn. native is second in the NSIC in blocks per game at 1.5 and fifth in field goal percentage at .595. Sevlie has scored in double digits in 21 of 35 games this season, including 20 or more points in

five games since Jan. 3.•Sevlie won the NSIC North Division player of the week honor on Jan. 5 after leadin the Dragons to two road wins. The Dragon forward scored 18 points in a victory over Upper Iowa on Jan. 2, then had 21 points and eight rebounds in a win over Winona State on Jan 3. Sevlie also made a career high 11 free throws in the game.•Sophomore guard Aaron Lien earned All Conference Second Team honors after averaging 12.4 points (third on team) and 3.9 rebounds per game. The Moorhead, Minn. native is shooting 50.8 percent (159-of-313) from the field, 41.8 percent (64-of-153) from the three-point line, and 81.3 percent (52-of-64) from the free throw line.

•Junior guard Tyler Vaughan and senior guard Jor-dan Riewer were named to the NSIC All Tourna-ment Team for their performances in the Dragons’ run to the NSIC Championship Game.•Vaughan averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in MSUM’s 4-game run, highlighted by 24 and 21-point outputs in wins over Upper Iowa and Minnesota State Mankato. Vaughan set a season high in points (24) and matched a season high in three pointers made with five in

the Upper Iowa victory. Vaughan drained three consecutive three-pointers in a 90-second span in the first half to help MSUM grab a nine point lead. Vaughan became the go-to guy for the Dragons over the weekend, again turning to the hot shooting junior for production in the Minnesota State Mankato game. Vaughan’s production got the Dragons offense going as the Braham, Minn. native scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field in the first half against the Mavericks. Vaughan ended the game with 21 points and had two three-pointers in the final six minutes to help MSUM stage off defeat.•Riewer averaged 16 points and 6.8 assists per game through the NSIC Tournament, his best game coming in the championship game as the point guard scored 19 points and tied a career high with nine assists. Riewer averaged 34 minutes a game in the tournament and was a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line.

•The Dragons rank in the top-10 in the nation as a team in 11 different categories:•1st in Turnovers per game: 8.3. The Dragons have turned the ball over eight or fewer times 17 times this season.•1st in Assist to Turnover Ratio: 1.94. •When the Dragons needed him the most, senior guard Jordan Riewer came through in a big way. The Dragons witnessed a 16-point second half lead evaporate as the Mavericks hit a three pointer with 45 seconds to pull within one point. Sophomore guard Aaron Lien responded with a three-pointer of his own to push MSUM’s lead back to four with 15 seconds left. Maverick guard Connor Miller then converted two free throws

with 10 seconds left. The Dragons turned the ball over after that point, leaving Zach Monaghan to drain a three pointer with five seconds left to give Minnesota State an 80-79 advantage. Then, Riewer took matters into his own hands. Riewer grabbed the outlet pass and raced to the other side of floor. The senior leader got to the middle of the lane and pushed up a floater just past two Maverick defender’s fingertips and fell threw the net for two points as time expired, giving MSUM an 81-80 victory, advancing them to the NSIC Championship Game.

Head Coach Chad Walthall needed a spark to get his team within striking distance in the second half of the NSIC Championship Game. For that spark, he turned to freshman guard Tanner Kretchman. Kretchman, who scored two points from the free throw line in the first half, entered the second half around the 11-minute mark and made an immediate impact. The Fargo Davies grad scored 11 points in six minutes, including

three three-pointers. His last three put the Dragons within seven points with five minutes remaining. Kretchman set career highs in points (16), field goals made (five), and three-pointers made (four) in the game.

The Bearcats enter the Sweet 16 matchup with the Dragons with a record of 25-6. NWMS defeated Washburn in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament before falling to Pittsburg State in the semi-finals. The Bearcats then fended off two NSIC teams in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, beating Minnesota State Mankato by three on Saturday and Augustana by one on Sunday. Freshman guard Justin Pitts has been the catalyst of the Bearcat offense during the NCAA Tournament, scoring 29 points against the Mavericks and 22 points against the Vikings. The Bearcat defense held All NSIC First Team selections Assem Marei (Minnesota State) and Casey Schilling (Augustana) to nine and 13 points, respectively.•Pitts, who was named the MIAA Feshman of the Year, leads the Bearcats in scoring (17.3 points per game) and free throw percentage (.845), and is second on the team in assists (3.4 per game).•Junior guard Connor Crooker is second on the team in scoring (13.8 points per game) and rebounding (4.0 per game).•Sophomore forward Zach Schneider is shooting 43.9 percent (100-of-228) from beyond the arc this season and averages 11.6 points per game. 93 percent (228-of-245) of Schneider’s shot come from beyond the arc.

COACHING BIOIn his first four seasons as head coach, Chad Walthall has led the Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team to unparalled heights. Having completed his fourth season in 2013-14, the Dragons are poised to continue as a formidable program in the rugged NSIC and region.That successful run -- one of the biggest turnarounds in all of Division II -- in Walthall’s first four years includes a first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1965, the most wins by any coach in his first four years at MSUM (76), and the best three-year stretch in the program in more than three decades (61 wins). The stretch also saw MSUM win its first conference title since 1981-82 when the Dragons won the NSIC North Division title in 2013-14.During the past three seasons, MSUM has averaged 20 wins per season and has won five NSIC tournament games during that time span. Prior to Walthall’s arrival, MSUM had won just two NSIC tournament games since 2000.Known for his ability to rebuild collegiate programs, Walthall has done just that at MSUM and has the Dragons poised to be a contender for years to come. Taking over a team that was 10-17 prior to his ar-rival, Walthall, in his second season at MSUM, took the Dragons to the NCAA tournament, recording a first-round win and advancing to the NCAA regional semifinals. In four years, he has compiled a record of 76-41 -- an average of 19 wins per season. In the previous three seasons prior to Walthall’s arrival, MSUM averaged 11 wins.Walthall has never had a losing record in conference play in 11 years as a collegiate head coach.The success continued in 2013-14 as Walthall guided a young Dragon team with just two seniors to the NSIC North Division title and to the program’s second 20-win season in the past three years. The Dragons were the only NSIC team to beat regional qualifiers Minnesota State, Mankato (which was ranked 11th in the nation at the time) and Winona State during the regular season.Senior guard Tarell Clark and junior guard Jordan Riewer earned All-NSIC honors. MSUM was ranked in the top 30 in several statistical categories throughout the season.In 2012-13, MSUM continued its progression under Walthall with a 19-11 mark, reaching the 19-win mark for the second consecutive year. That included a thrilling 78-74 win over No. 11-ranked St. Cloud State and an eight-game winning streak. The Dragons earned a first-round home game in the Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference tournament for just the second time in school history -- the first being in Walthall’s second year in 2011-12 -- and earned an 87-78 win over SMSU to advance.Senior Alex Novak also set MSUM career records in blocks (223) and rebounds (1,054) during Walthall’s first three years. Novak also earned Capital One/CoSida Academic All-America first-team honors in 2013, becoming the first Dragon student-athlete to achieve the honor in four years, and the first men’s basketball player since 1996 to do so. Novak was first team All-NSIC, while senior Anthony Tucker earned All-NSIC second-team honors.In 2011-12, Walthall guided MSUM to a 21-10 mark and led the Dragons to the NCAA tournament. Not only did MSUM advance to the NCAA Tournament, but they earned a first-round win, an 82-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State, to advance to the second round.The Dragons started the year with an 11-0 mark, their best start since 1971. They were ranked as high as 16th in the nation, the first time MSUM has been ranked in program history. The team also beat Division I foe North Dakota State, 90-84 in an exhibition game to start the season.In Walthall’s first season in 2010-11, he proved he was more than capable of rebuilding the Dragon bas-ketball program. In 14 years prior to his arrival, the program had won only 40 percent of its games and posted just two winning conference seasons. Walthall, who has had winning league records in each of his 11 years as a collegiate head coach, led the Dragons to their first overall (15-12) and NSIC (12-10) winning seasons since 2002-2003.Prior to arriving at MSUM, Walthall was an assistant coach at Iowa of the Big Ten from 2007-10. While on the Hawkeye coaching staff, he assisted in recruiting Iowa’s 2010 recruiting class which was ranked 20th in the nation and third in the Big Ten, by Van Coleman. Walthall also served as interim Head Coach for the Hawkeyes for four games, while Head Coach Todd Lickliter was sidelined due to health reasons.Walthall’s head coaching experience has a history of rebuilding basketball programs. In 2000 he was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Loras College. He served seven seasons (2000-07) becoming the third win-ningest coach in school history. He also served as Director of Athletics from 2004-07.Walthall was named 2006-07 Iowa Intercollegiate Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year while leading the Duhawks to a 15-1 conference record and the IIAC title. Along with achieving regular season success, Walthall led Loras to its first IIAC tournament title and first NCAA tournament berth in school history. His seven-year mark at Loras was 116-69..Walthall took over the Loras program after serving as assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for two years (1998-2000) and St. Olaf College for four years (1994-98). He was head coach at Redwood Valley High School for one season (1993-94) and a graduate assistant coach at St. Cloud State University for two years (1991-93). While at St. Cloud State he also served as head coach for a Collegiate All-Star team that traveled to Europe.Walthall attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., earning a bachelor’s degree in Physical Educa-tion and Health in 1991. While at Saint Cloud State he earned his master’s degree in Athletics Administra-tion (1993). As a collegiate athlete at Concordia, Walthall played quarterback and was part of two Min-nesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) football championships. He earned all-conference honors in that sport as a junior and senior. He also served as a student assistant basketball coach.As a high school athlete in Staples, Minn., Walthall was team captain and three-year starter in football, basketball and baseball, earning numerous All-Conference honors.Walthall is a native of Staples, Minn. and currently resides in Moorhead. He and his wife, Jenni, have four children, a daughter Brooke (14), twin sons Brady and Blake (12), and son Beau (eight).
